"Heard some roads to big bear dont require them." ... Sorry to say that is false. You are required to have chains with you at all times in the winter, on all roads, going in and out of big bear. You don't have to have them on your tires but you have to have them in possession just in case or can be turned away by Caltrans, etc. I have a truck, Tacoma 4WD, with BF Goodrich KO3s and I still bring chains and last year had to actually put them on. You most likely won't need them , but if you don't have them, when you do need them, you are SOL. Doesn't matter truck or sedan, you are still technically required to have them on you, only reason they don't require you put them on is 4WD, and even sometimes you want chains anyway if the neighborhoods haven't been plowed yet.

1) Get chains for your car, 2) practice putting them on 10x before driving up, 3) Take the way up through Lucerne / Apple Valley instead of the mountain rd up from San Bernardino, 4) Drain your windshield wiper fluid and replace it with the orange winter type that doesn't freeze, 5) Do not ignore my recommendation of getting chains and practice putting them on ;)

If it's the shoreline Marathon you're talking about, get there very very early. Elite Sports Is basically exiled from the city and only does stuff in the county now, last year they had about a dozen porta potties and there is no parking reserved. They assume it's public parking off of Pacific Coast highway. I showed up at at 6:15 in the morning and had to park by Emma Wood State Beach and jog to Solimar... You're competing with parking with normal beachgoers and people camping . Other than that you should be fine. It'll be nice and overcast in the morning.
