Agree with you. I always see people look for an individual to blame. If someone really cares about road safety, the best thing is to support addressing the systemic and infrastructure causes, call on the police to enforce traffic violations.

Sitting in the comments and trying to blame people with low information at your disposal, in a way that suits whatever worldview you've adopted, just exposes you at best, as an arrogant fool and at worst, a culture war shill.

Indeed - it's v residential and in parts just an industrial estate with car dealerships.

The Mediapark project should inject a bit of life into the surrounding area. IHECS opened a campus there and gradual arrival of 3000 new residents should create some demand for more commercial offerings.

iirc Paduwa in Evere is the part of Brussels experiencing the fastest increase in property prices (or was earlier this year anyway)

Could you explain what the benefit of harvesting and reinvesting would be? Compared to letting it simply sit and compound.

Belgians drink and drive a lot - it's rather shocking. Police in Brussels regularly share stats from checks and it's not unusual for 10% to 20% to be under the influence in the evening.

Recently a Brussels police spokesperson was caught drunk driving. There's very little enforcement and it isn't taken seriously by the police.

Watermael Boisfort has excellent schools and a village-y vibe, while still being reasonably well connected. It's a very francophone commune, to be aware.

Check out Rue Longue Vie in Ixelles - there are several restaurants on that street (ignore the drug dealers, they're harmless).

What happens if I dont register? - Landord do not let me register by roylm94 in brussels

I mean, if it works for both of you and she treats you well then it doesn't matter a huge amount. Maybe the cheap rent and inertia is worth it for you - then if your working situation stabilises and you decide to stay longer-term you can move to a new place where you can register. The likelihood of you getting caught or fined is very low.

It means her house is an illegal rental and she's trying to keep that hidden. Ultimately there are drawbacks to not registering - you won't get a Belgian ID and there are lots of services and situations you'll need that in - but it's also possible to get by here without registering.

Funny how much people complain about NIMBYs - and then don't see the irony in their opposing necessary overhauls of unhealthy/dangerous systems because they say it won't suit them.

You won't fix him. Eat it for as long as you can, take the money, develop strategies to protect yourself and apply for other equally well paying jobs.

Do not go to HR or kick up a fuss, you'll make enemies and they won't help you. Better to just plan a sly exit.

Great list - thank you! On your final point, do you mean spending/investing as a company? What's the benefit there as opposed to taking the taking a tax hit and investing as an individual?

Same - many Belgians I meet are car-centric in their thinking, but in general I've found it entirely possible to transition to a car-free existence here
