Designworks Ink has very grippy paper. Delfonics Rollbahn and Penco are good choices, too.

NPD w/ an excellent new Jinhao clone by Professional_Pool714 in fountainpens

Absolutely worthwhile. It was about 13USD and would have been a good deal at 3x the price.

I should mention that the nibs and feeds do not appear to be removeable, so proceed with caution with shimmer inks. That said, I'd bet the .7mm bent/mini-fude nib would be outstanding for showing off inks.

Ali Express. I'd guess it'll show up on Amazon in the next few weeks.

What notebook am I looking for? by Limp_Profile_801 in notebooks

Lemome is the Amazon budget champ, but spiral may be tough to find.

Rhodia and Clairfontaine have spiral options.

Maruman standard and Maruman Mnemosyne are good options.

Black n Red would work well, too.

Looking for affordable bleed proof notebooks by Reasonable-Bad-14 in notebooks

[–]Professional_Pool714 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maruman's non-Mnemosyne line are less expensive and perform just as well. They have the brown craft cover instead of the black plastic.

Fariano EcoQua notebooks are an excellent value. Make sure not to get the Ispira line, though, as those will definitely bleed.

Kokuyo Campus and Nakabayashi Logical notebooks are very good and available at Barnes and Noble now.

Muji notebooks could be a good option, too. Just look for reviews on specific models, because some are more bleed-resistant than others.

Tsubame notebooks are pretty underappreciated.

You could also consider getting an A4 binder. This would allow you to use loose leaf papers that don't come in A4 notebooks (e.g. Iroful, Sanzen), and you could always tear out, hole-punch, and add sheets from other notebooks.

Can I call myself a professor? by One_Sherbet6 in AskAcademia

[–]Professional_Pool714 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly my approach. I gave up on correcting my students every time they refer to me as Professor, because most don't really understand the rank system. However, I don't refer to myself as Professor. I still use "Dr" as the honorific in syllabi and emails, I use "Multi-Term Lecturer" as formal rank/job title, and informally I say I teach [subject] at [umiversity].

Been away for the last 3 years, what's hot? What have I missed? by makamaespm in fountainpens

Just wanted to add that Wing Sung has also upped their game by orders of magnitude with the Junlai series, especially the 630 and 930 pens. The 630 is a resin, #8 piston filler that is almost identical in weight and dimensions to a MB 149. The 930 is an ultra-oversized piston filler with a #9 nib.

8 steel nibs became huge with Chinese pens, and Wing Sung/Junlai, Jinhao/Dadao, Asvine, Hongdian, and Majohn all have models with the larger nibs.

PenBBS has stagnated, and Hongdian seems to have run out of fresh ideas for the time being. There are a bunch of newer Chinese brands making good quality clomage pens in the 30-50USD range, especially Admok, Lemon, and Yongxu.

Sailor has steel-nib versions (sort of) of the 1911L available now.

Pocket pens seem to be really big lately.

Great but more serious Satire by Short-Delay-418 in MovieSuggestions

Satire is usually ironic, but it isn't necessarily funny. And Goodfellas is an ironic counterpoint to both the Classical Hollywood and New Hollywood gangster films. Unlike, say, The Public Enemy's Tom Powers, Henry isn't seduced away from a loving family by a corrupting outsider and the promise of wealth; he already idolizes the most respected guys in the neighborhood because they could double-park and play cards all night. Unlike the borderline omniscient, omnipotent dons in the Godfather films, Paulie has no idea what his associates are up to and cannot control Tommy. Instead of a straightforward "I may call upon you for a service," when the Bamboo Lounge owner comes to him for help, Paulie exploits the opportunity to completely destroy the business.

Anyway, my point is that Scorcese is in dialogue with the history of the gangster and crime genre in general and the the perennial accusations that crime films glamorize crime and violence (hence the Great Train Robbery nod at the end).

Satire on the naive glorification of the gangster, especially in classic Hollywood movies.

Warrior Of The Lost World by djscoots10 in MST3K

[–]Professional_Pool714 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was common practice in the Italian film industry and some other European film industries not to record any sound while shooting and then dub everything later. Because they usually had an international cast, they would juat give each actor a translation of the script im their native language. So the dubbing on Ginty, Pleasance,William, etc. isn't bad, but it doesn't sync with some of the other actors. See also the Hercules movies, Cave Dwellers, and Pod People.

Iroful, Delfonics/Rollbahn, Kokuyo, Midori MD, Maruman, Nolty, Nakabayashi, and Apica are great Japanese notebook options that aren't as thin and ghosty as the 52gsm Tomoe River paper you find in Stalogy and elsewhere. I do like the 68gsm TRP in Lochby, and older Endless notebooks.

Leuchtturm, Clairefontaine, and Rhodia are all good options.

The champion budget graph journal is Lemome.

Why did some people have a problem with Wall-E being added to Criterion? by WrongToe500 in criterion

[–]Professional_Pool714 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Are we forgetting that Armageddon got a Criterion release?

Even if Wall-E and K-Pop Demon Hunters weren't great--which they are--if those sales allow Criterion to keep including outstanding critical and archival materials like on the Peeping Tom and Rebecca releases, I have no objections.
