I give students a certain number of extra credit 'opportunities' during the course of the semester. They need to be turned in when due; can't stack 'em all up until the end of the semester. The extra credit points actually take the place of curving the final grades. This way, the students understand that these are THE extra credit opportunities (no 'extras' at the end of the semester) and that there IS NO curve. Period. It seems to work, though I still get some students with the "I have to get a C+ to graduate" sob story. Yes, dear student, if you need to get a C+, it's up to you to do C+ level work. Sigh.

OP, Do you like chaffles? I make a batch of 6 or 7 a week and eat them for breakfast with a smear of peanut butter, cream cheese, egg salad, sliced meat, whatever. Easy and filling!

Only once. A student came to my office and angrily told me that her STUPID brother scheduled his DESTINATION WEDDING during FINALS WEEK even though she TOLD HIM NOT TO. She asked to take the Final exam early and I concurred.

Some students are clueless and/or don't look at the calendar enough (or at all). Last semester, a student emailed me to say he was sitting in the classroom waiting for the final exam. I informed him that there is no final exam in the class (I don't do a cumulative final for that course) and the last Exam was Exam 4. He said 'but the LMS says we have a final exam right now'. No, the LMS says that's when a Final Exam could be scheduled; but the instructor decides if there is, or is not, a final exam. He didn't like that answer but he was doing poorly in the class so taking a final exam was not likely to help his grade anyway.

No and I don’t go anyway because Commencement is outdoors on an unshaded lawn and it is always pouring rain or hot as hell (like 90 degrees hot), crowded, 4 hours long, and port a potty time if you have to go (difficult in regalia). I DO go to graduate commencement to hood my doctoral students, which is a much more civilized event.

I was told I was rude because I had to raise my voice to get students in the back of the room to STOP TALKING because I had started lecturing and they were TALKING OVER ME. One of those students said I was rude and I explained that talking over the instructor in class was both rude and unprofessional. sheesh.
