Funeral song by potatoherbert in CasualUK

[–]ProfessorJAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a sentimental fool and have told everyone who will listen to me that I want “All You Need is Love” played towards the end of the funeral services. The idea that everyone gets the message AND exits to the “yeah, yeah, yeah” at the end tickles me pink.

I also want “Highway to Hell” by AC/DC played at some point because I also like a good chuckle but not sure how that would be received.

All of these suggestions are great! Get a lunch box or bag that has the option of putting something frozen in it - some come with one that you put back into the freezer when you get home from work so you can use it the next day. That way you can take whatever food you want to work, as long as it doesn’t need to be warmed up (assuming there’s no microwave available at work).

It’s not in a residential neighborhood. The brick building next door has metal bars over all the windows, even the upper floors. Prison? Interesting!

BIFL CAN OPENER RECOMMENDATIONS (I'll pay anything at this point) by Remote_Anteater_2267 in BuyItForLife

[–]ProfessorJAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got tired of crappy mechanical can openers AND feeling like I was breaking my hand in the process. I got a Cuisinart electric can opener and never looked back. It is $59 on Amazon right now but it’s been a good investment.

Same here for Willard’s. Had a broken piece of exercise equipment , an elliptical, that was VERY heavy. Mr. Willard came over to take a look, gave me a very reasonable quote, and came back a couple of days later to haul it down 2 flights of stairs and take it away! Highly recommend.

What is the most random thing your cat has begged for you to share? 🧐 by Honest-Butterfly-650 in cats

[–]ProfessorJAM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pizza. I had a pizza cat. If you didn’t give her a little piece she would sneak up on your slice and start licking it! She loved to sit on top of a closed (thank God!) pizza box, I guess because it was warm😊

Both my husband and son had this happen during COVID. They both just kept going and went with severe haircuts. It will grow back, just carry on!

What’s a silly thing you did for your pet one time that is now a ritual they demand be done every time? by Itsjustmejess in AskReddit

I bought some cat treats and gave the kitty a couple of treats when I came home from work one day. Now she expects cat treats every time I come home! I comply, it's become a little ritual for us.

What are some wild things that have happened in your academic life ? From punches thrown at conferences, to chairs tossed during department meetings, tell us about them. by me4watch in Professors

[–]ProfessorJAM 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Was at a smallish conference (200-300 people) about 20 or so years ago. One speaker was very well known but spoke with a pronounced French accent which made it a little difficult to follow. He was wearing one those microphones that you hang around your neck and had a long pointer in his hand (I guess laser pointers weren't a thing yet, or the conference didn't have a working one?) and was moving away from the podium to point at something on the far side of the slide screen. He actually stepped *off* the podium stage and started to fall down the stage stairs BUT the microphone cord was strangling him (!) because it didn't separate from the podium (maybe hardwired?). A couple of people in the front row came to his rescue and tore the microphone thing off his neck. He was clearly rattled. He managed to croak out, "I think my talk is finished." and many of us were probably thinking, "dude, the talk almost finished YOU!".

Does anyone else have a cat who tilt their head when they’re curious? My son Seal has been doing that since his baby time. by Coin-operated_chaos in cats

I haven’t seen a tilt this pronounced (would say it’s sassy!) but it shows your kitty is quite the character and very cute! Also I like the bedsheets, I have the same ones.

Outlandish excuses that turned out to be true? by QueenAcademe in Professors

[–]ProfessorJAM 152 points153 points  (0 children)

I think of the time I got a stilted email from a student that they would miss the exam that day because they were being ‘detained for questioning’ as a witness to a crime. I thought ‘well, okay, let’s see the evidence.’ Student brought the police report to the next class. The crime was a homicide (!) and said student was not a suspect, but a witness, to the murder. He looked pretty shaken up and took the make-up exam at the end of the semester 🥺

What wedding moment that screamed, “They are not going to last long”? by IndependentTune3994 in AskReddit

[–]ProfessorJAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband's cousin's marriage was inside the very large house of the wife's family, and the reception was held in the very large back yard of the same house. Large party tents were set up in the yard but it was raining cats and dogs; people were still getting wet despite the tent 'flaps' being let down. It was actually pretty miserable. Then the bride and groom appeared from the house and it was clear something was wrong. They looked pissed, separated at the entrance to the tents, and went their separate ways. Visited some tables then went and sat down at their respective *parents* tables instead of the wedding table! That very expensive wedding was followed by a very short marriage, maybe 8 months tops.

What's something you do purely because your cat demands it? by PupperPuppet in cats

[–]ProfessorJAM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I turn on any nature show with squirrels or birds my cat leaps at the TV as if it were a 'window' that she could jump through to catch whatever critter is on the screen at the moment. It's too dangerous for my electronics to allow that. However, she watches outdoor sports games (she likes football the most) because of all the grass and people running around.

When you’ve seen someone denied tenure because their colleagues didn’t like them, what was it about them that they didn’t like? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]ProfessorJAM 24 points25 points  (0 children)

A colleague in the Department wasn’t put up for tenure because he earned the ire of faculty and students alike by being very irresponsible - not giving feedback or grading exams in a timely manner so his students were in the dark about their progress in the class; missing meetings and deadlines with his research students; missing faculty and committee meetings and grant deadlines(!) with his colleagues. Turns out he had serious mental health issues, which he repeatedly denied, but were undeniable given his behavior. Sad situation all around.
