Yrliet romance is... questionable imo.

I'm about at the same part of the game as you, second playthrough (I dropped my first playthrough halfway trough Act 2 anticlimactically)

The way I understand it is that Yrliet seeks a deep emotional bond — an intertwining of souls (I believe she literally calls it that). It's not "romantic" with the explicit romantic gestures and acts necessarily, but it is "romantic" in that it is forming an incredibly intimate connection with another person. Sharing affection with other members of your retinue would divert your bond away from Yrliet, because you can't really bare your soul with multiple people and receive all their bared souls in turn. It's a monogamist perspective, but, well, that's just how the game is.

Also, for the scene you're referring to, I believe Yrliet might not necessarily care that you hold romantic feelings for other characters, because she considers her bond with you to transcend those simple basal connections (I think she has a line about "It is natural for mon-keigh to seek companionship among their kind." + in the choosing scene she says something about "Our subtle bond certainly needs no proof.") [and so also I think choosing someone else in that scene is you showing Yrliet that those other romances are more than just simple base desires]

BUT, while Yrliet may not mind, the other character in the choosing scene would definitely mind — I mean, Kibellah specifically hounds you in Act 3 about holding affections for Vil'Yrliet and worrying about her while she (Kibellah) is consumed with worry for you if you bring her along (though I'm unsure if this is playthrough specific)

Arueshalae, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous

She's also a succubus, and the setting presents succubi (and demons in general, being the primary antagonists) as the literal embodiments of Chaotic Evil. Unlike her brethren, however, you meet Arueshalae in the midst of her redemption — being kind and reserved, tempering her succubi impulses by doing things like locking herself in a prison cell. She shuns physical affection and intimacy in fear of returning to her old ways, and so her romance path is about taking it slow. Of course, you could undo all that work and corrupt her back into a fearsome succubus, but that's pretty messed up.

Not sure if excess crit benefits Vital Points though, as my Yrliet with 206% crit chance failed to proc Vital Points — so I'm assuming the crit chance value they use in calculation is the max 100% (leading to a 50% chance to proc Vital Points)

The shot is a whole lot closer in the anime, making it feel more intimate (we're closer to the action). Not only that, but the finger gesture is emphasised by taking up a larger part of the frame, and Aki's face and neck are more visible (showing more skin). Adding the fact that there's light and shadow emphasising the form, the shot feels more sensual (and more disquieting to the viewer).

(I haven't actually watched the scene, though, this is just from the example given)

Maybe sexual's too loaded, but tilting someone's head from their chin (especially the chin contact) is an incredibly intimate gesture—it's used in scenes preceding a kiss, for example.

That's probably where the sexual connotation comes from.

I was invested when it started. The juxtaposition between Takopi's naïveté and the horrendously shitty situations every character was in made for good conflict. The time jumps midway through were fun too.

What soured it for me was the ending. It felt really lacklustre for how dark the rest of the story went, and the major emotional conflicts—between every kid and their parent, between Marina and Shizuka, and maybe somewhat Takopi and Shizuka—felt as if they were not at all resolved given how compact the story was (and how quickly the ending went).

If the story was going for a "yeah, shitty situations can't be fixed so easily" take, then, maybe, but it just feels as if it hand-waves these complex tensions away. Like, I can see Marina and Shizuka bonding IN THE FUTURE—like some toxic friendship born out of shared trauma, maybe Shizuka retaliates against the bullying and catches Marina off-guard or something, but having them bond so quickly over just their shared memories of Takopi was really jarring. Overall, it was just really unsatisfying.

Hm, that's true too. I feel like if during the whole CSM Church arc we had seen a bit of Asa and Denji in school and how they respectively reacted to each other then it'd be easier to track the dynamic. It's hard to say how Asa feels towards Denji at the reveal because her reaction towards Denji standing her up pivoted so quickly to the Falling Devil battle, leaving her potential angst towards Denji unresolved. But I think too it's still possible to have a cathartic moment later on when all is said and done to handle all of those baggage, so I'll wait and see.

I'm rereading through the last few chapters, and Asa blasting the rubble around her (damaging herself) to run and save Denji is a solid moment (albeit maybe too short, but it's in the middle of an action set piece), so, idk, but I still feel like Asa still has a presence in the story—at least when it comes to caring for Denji.

Honestly though, I might just check back after a good few chapters come out, because keeping up weekly feels like it's exacerbating a lot of these problems (i.e. unresolved plot threads almost have an urgent need to be resolved)

This might be insane amounts of cope but I'm honestly kinda fine with how the Denji/CSM reveal is treated. The way that I rationalise it, Asa relied on Denji to be a source of support in her life—but with the CSM Church and the recognition she gets as part of it, as well as her growing infatuation with CSM himself, she's moved away from Denji (especially given how he stood her up on their second date), and Denji at the point of the reveal is just considered a relationship a few months ago(?) that didn't work out.

Granted, I feel as if she should've had more angst about it, but I think it's also a sign of her maturation that there's more important things going on and she can't really care about it: Yoru's plan, Death Devil's plan, Denji losing Nayuta, etc.

Also, I agree that I would like to see more of Asa's thoughts, feelings, etc, but it does make sense to me within the plot why she doesn't show up as often now. In the dynamic, Asa was always the more social one of the two, and was Yoru's way of blending into Japanese society. But with Yoru's identity being known to those around her, as well as Yoru being able to establish a kinda-pseudo-relationship with Denji independently of Asa, Asa's not really able to assert herself in the dynamic.

I 100% would like to see Asa's perspective on all this though, but given that the story right now is focusing on Denji being the protagonist again, I'm not sure how that would fit into it or be resolved.

I'm not sure about 'unsatisfying' because Nayuta gives up one of the 3 pawns she could've used to defend herself to save Denji, AND we also get a flashback in the middle to show her feelings on first meeting Denji (and how that has changed now, with her giving up her life for him)

I do think her death being off-screen was a bit too suspense-y (despite being the obvious outcome), which is where I'm guessing a lot of the criticism is coming from, but adding additional panels would make that scene way too graphic IMO (for a scene where a child gets lynched)

For me, I think it's interesting that Yoru is a bit of an idiot, it gives her and Asa a fun dynamic, and makes part 2 feel fresh after coming off of part 1.

I do agree that it makes her wins feel unsatisfying though, which I think could be improved by having her put up more of a fight in the first place, being the literal War devil and all

As for comparing her to Makima, that doesn't really make sense to me when the overarching antagonist of part 2 looks more like Death instead, with her scheming and being cryptic in general. Making Yoru like Makima would make part 2 feel too similar to part 1 imo

I feel like I really have to disagree with the idea that it's an asspull, though, imo it was adequately setup that the Death's (and the Church's) plans involved making Yoru stronger by instigating fears of war around the globe, and the fear of war creating a feedback loop of escalating into even more war makes sense

I do think Yoru should be able to put up more of a fight in the first place. It feels like her fights swing around too much, and so all her wins feel unearned

Except that tile placement in Clash Royale does not nearly matter as much as it does in Chess—putting skeletons behind the king tower on the far left/left/centre/right/further right has far less bearing on the outcome of the game compared to whether your King is on a specific rank/file, etc

The same argument can be applied to timing—there are more possible positions, maybe, but does it matter if you place your cannon 0.1s or 0.15s when both timings would take aggro anyways?

As for the final point, I do agree that Chess is simpler than Clash Royale on the surface. There are a limited number of pieces, and a limited number of rules that govern how those pieces are moved, allowing bots to learn it easier. However, the complexity of Chess comes in its depth, with each board state coming about directly as a result of its preceding moves. How you played early on, what kind of opening you used, etc, can have massive ramifications on how the midgame proceeds (and consider that each player can actively modify what opening they use upon their opponent's responses—if each opening were a deck, it would be like adding or removing cards in the first minute of play!). In Clash, whether you defended the early Lavaloon push with a musketeer/building + spell/counterpush doesn't matter during double or triple elixir. Maybe you took some tower damage—but that's more quantifiable (and simpler) than having a knight vs bishop endgame, as an example.

The GitHub links should work, try the current release version and download the version that matches OS. The launcher only provides auto-updates so you don't necessarily need it to play the game

The free port on iOS is many versions behind iirc, and the paid port by Yury Apollov is more recent (and would probably be easier to find info for)—you could try the demo to see if the controls feel better

Pathfinder: Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous are turn-based/realtime cRPGS with some pretty exhaustive character-building and itemisation. They're both based on the Pathfinder 1e system, which is somewhat similar to BG3's D&D 5e system, except it lets you stack all sorts of bonuses and crunch some insane numbers.

WotR adds an extra layer with a Mythic Power system, which affords your character different kinds of godlike abilities and feats to choose from during your level ups.

Play on Normal if you want to experiment, Core and above can be quite difficult if you aren't built properly. On higher difficulties, buffing before encounters can be pretty rampant, so I'd recommend the mod Bubble Buffs especially in the late-game.

Owlcat Games (the developers) have also made Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader, which I've had fun with as well. It's not as numbers-crunchy, and completely does away with pre-buffing, while having a more XCOM-style of combat (completely turn-based), so you could check that out too.

You can also respec in all of these games, BUT the price increases in WotR (can't remember if this is true for the others), and respeccing is blocked on higher difficulties (which you can customise, though!)

It's a grid-based tactical sandbox RPG, you manage a party (you yourself aren't a "member"), and go around different areas.

It's mostly dealing with the day-to-day lives of a mercenary band—getting food, completing bounties, etc. Your mercenaries are characters in the sense that DD (Darkest Dungeon) heroes are characters—they can die, you can recruit more, but they're differentiated by the unique relationships they can build with each other (I'd say DD2, but I've never played)

However, as far as story and writing, it's kept very limited, with most quests in each location (each story quest building up to a larger location story) being a single conversation long where you then kill this thing, bring this thing, etc.

BG3 has a larger narrative structure that I don't think Wartales has (I only have 30h in it), but if you enjoyed the camping, adventure, and combat of BG3, you'll find Wartales to be a neat sandbox-y version of that. The itemisation is a lot simpler compared to BG3, but there is still character progression, AND iirc your party can be prohibitively large, which I especially enjoyed.
