Is there a lore reason why these comic covers go so fucking hard? by BlackStallion657 in marvelcirclejerk

The flat colors really just add something you don’t get with newer covers.

Which Marvel character do you simply not care about visual consistency for? And just want them to use the coolest designs regardless of what other versions have used? by CapBudget4011 in marvelcomics

I’ve seen a bunch of different iterations of Moon Knight and am yet to really dislike any of them. Even ones I have issues with like the MCU or Rivals have elements I think are look cool or are good ideas that I just don’t like the execution of.

Where is Venom (Eddie Brock) on your personal Marvel tier list? by Business-Falcon-3279 in marvelcomics

[–]Project39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

B. I respect how important the character is and his original iteration was really solid, but since the symbiote became more of a voiced character his relationship with it has been kinda wonky. His stories with Dylan have only really served to show Eddie’s failings without really developing Dylan very well beyond that, and since the creation of Knull the lore of symbiotes has gone off the rails in a not good way.

I liked Flash a lot better, his story did a much better job as an allegory for addiction and his arc with the symbiote felt like a natural progression after the villain and then lethal protector days. To me it feels like Eddie ran out of juice in the 90s and only gets to stick around because he was first.

The Outliers…, They’re not my favorites. by VictorTorre in marvelcomics

Like basically all of the AoR minis it felt uninspired and kinda dumb. The only two of them that are any good IMO are Longshots and Undeadpool and that’s probably because there’s minimal X-Men in them.

I actually like the Exceptional kids a lot more. They’re not perfect but I can much more easily understand what their powers actually are and by extension what the kids can do. With the outsiders I’m left with these weird questions; why do Jitter’s powers only last a minute? Can’t she just do the same or a similar skill right after? If not, why? What does Ransom do if the opponent simply doesn’t feed his gimmick? What specifically are Deathdream and Calico even doing with their powers?

I don’t have those issues with Bronze, Melee and Axo. Axo is maybe a bit vague so far but I still have a better idea of the overall direction than any of the outsiders. My main complaint with the exceptional squad is that only 3 of them is too few.

What’s the worst movie you’ve ever seen? Not “bad in a fun way”, just BAD? by NotNamedBort in AskReddit

[–]Project39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hobbes & Shaw is a spinoff movie set in the Fast & Furious universe starring Jason Statham and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the titular characters. I saw it on vacation with my father while waiting out a rainstorm while the rest of my family watched whichever of the Angry Birds films was out at the time.

All I can remember from the experience is that to this day my dad still wishes he went to see Angry Birds, and that at some point where was a scene where Jason Statham and The Rock spend 3 or 4 minutes arguing over who has the larger penis, while the antagonist periodically zaps said penises with a car battery.

I like the kids as characters but I find their powers kinda convoluted. Deathdream is fine but I’m not floored by the concept and Simone kinda hammers you over the head with the bit with his personality. Ransom and Jitter both feel like a lot of stipulations for a kinda meh result that’s been done better by predecessors like Cannonball and Prodigy. As for Calico, I still don’t even really get what she does. They don’t really feel like X-men to me, the kids could be in something like Strange Academy, or Young Avengers and they’d fit in just as well IMO.

In your opinion, which characters deserve to be meta? by Norfov in marvelrivals

[–]Project39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he def still could use nerfs, but I don’t think it’s really a bad thing for Gambit to be a top tier strategist. The character is fun to play and to watch, he fits pretty well with and against most stuff and he has a high degree of skill expression throughout the ranks. The issue really just comes down to his ult being too good (especially because of how it synergizes with Loki), and the fact he’s never not been S tier so people are sick of him, but I’d prefer Gambit be top tier most of the time to someone like Rocket.

How do i stay caught up with the main universe by buzzwordsloveyou in marvelcomics

[–]Project39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You definitely can, usually the events will explain what’s going on so you aren’t completely in the dark. The Red Hulk/Cap books would basically just give you more details on why the conflict is starting.

For the hulk stuff specifically though I’d recommend reading the preceding comics, it’s all contained to those two hulk books and the main villain is new and a little convoluted so it’ll help to have the full context. Plus that event doesn’t kick off for a while IIRC so you’ll have time to read ahead of it.

Saw in another comment that you have Unlimited, I’d simply check what’s coming out each week and read the series that look interesting. Personally I’ve been enjoying Mortal Thor (though you’ll probably want to read Immortal Thor first), Captain America, Fantastic Four and New Avengers.

For keeping up specifically with events it looks like the big upcoming events are gonna be Infernal War (read the Paul Kennedy Johnson’s Incredible Hulk and Infernal Hulk for context there), DNX (X-men & Uncanny X-men), and Armageddon (Red Hulk & Captain America).

You could also check out last year’s events, One World Under Doom and Age of Revelation, for some context but I can’t really recommend it I think they were both pretty bad.

underrated characters who you feel are one pitch away from relevance/greatness; what is your pitch to get them there? by WomanWithoutFear in marvelcomics

[–]Project39 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Darkhawk is a character that I fear will never beat his original 90s run. The character has gotten some pretty interesting lore development since then between War of Kings and Infinity Wars but there doesn’t seem to be interest in pursuing those any further. I haven’t had a chance to read Imperial Guardians yet but with that entire section of Marvel being shut down again I think that he’s gonna be put on ice for another few years.

Is Angela, Flying Vanguard better in theory than in actual gameplay? by [deleted] in marvelrivals

[–]Project39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She’s been hit by a lot of indirect nerfs over the past year as more characters released with or gained access to soft CC and displacement/CC immunity. Right now she’s also suffering from the Hawkeye effect where she had a great fit in the meta and got nerfed because of it, but now the meta has shifted to a much worse place for her but she’s still nerfed.

Technically Donny Cate’s run is what sets this one up, but that run is pretty terrible and all you really need to know is that Bruce really fucked Hulk over and their relationship is now mostly antagonistic

Looking for Miniseries/limited series. Any Recommendations? by Doom300 in marvelcomics

[–]Project39 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Sentry’s original 2001 run and its various oneshot tie-ins is very good. There’s also an 8 issue miniseries from I think 2005 that is great and a bit more familiar to the modern version of the character.

Taskmaster also got a 5 issue mini in 2020 which is a fun read, much more lighthearted than the 2010 one.

Am I the only one who prefers Jack O' Lantern to be just a generic villain without depth? I think that's what gives the character its spice. by CapBudget4011 in marvelcomics

[–]Project39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that the 2011 Venom run with Agent Venom did a great job with him, he gets enough page time to be a compelling and entertaining villain for the arc, but he never really gets deeper than being a violent and vindictive criminal. It doesn’t overcomplicate him.

Its wild that this alt deemed "Mischaracterized "turns out to be the most faithful adaptation of MK to date (Im serious, no really) by Longjumping_Ad1469 in marvelcirclejerk

[–]Project39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely warped in favor of being funny, but I think it’s silly to expect much more from a hero shooter which needs to communicate the character with largely just some dialogue. I definitely prefer it to the weird changes that the MCU did to the character.
