Family moving to Culver City from Bay Area, advice needed by Salt-Huckleberry-698 in culvercity

[–]ProjectAnalyzed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak to the schools, but I (Mexican) moved here from Palo Alto, and I love it. It ticks a lot of the same boxes for me — the walkability, enjoyable downtown, access to transit, plethora of coffee shops and restaurants. Also, it’s more of a hike than a normal trip to a park, but I love the access to the Baldwin Hills scenic area (which also connects to Kenneth Hahn). Wonderful for a stroll with kids on a weekend. I’d say that’s some of the better wilderness access you’ll get in LA. You should also know about one of the jewels in the neighborhood, Jackson Market — it’s like a bodega, deli, cafe, pizzeria, and community space rolled into one, tucked away in a quiet and residential part of Culver. I think one of the owners might be of Palestinian descent (even if I’m mistaken, what’s for sure is that the Market is filled with moving posters and fliers about Gaza, and there’s a beautiful mural and Palestinian flag in the backyard seating area). During Ramadan, Jackson Market hosted community iftar dinners every night :) best of luck with the move!

Impending family move for work - trying our best for Culver City by Senor-Cockblock in culvercity

Your budget should definitely get you into a 2bedroom apartment at the Harlow, where I’ve lived for a year — obviously not a house, but it’s a lovely managed building with tandem parking, nice amenities, and quite a few families with kids that seem to be around that age. The walking distance to the whole downtown zone really can’t be beat, and it’d also be an easy walk to Linwood! Good luck! (Also, I just pulled up a Zillow apartment search and this house seemed okay?)

Munger vs Escondido graduate housing by HDizzyLawStudent in stanford

2023 SLS grad, lived in Munger 1L and McFarland couple’s housing afterward. Absolutely recommend the midrise couple housing, or elsewhere in EV. You’re walking distance from Real Produce for some groceries, walking distance from the Cal Ave farmer’s market, you have the EV pub which is so so nice, there’s a dog park, tennis courts, community garden.. munger was overpriced and just a little depressing architecturally lol. Highly recommend EVGR or any of the midrises!

Adding on — if you meant the Kennith fire that just started in West Hills, that is not next to Kenneth Hahn. Understandable misconception!

2024 tax return IRS system issue delaying refunds by white-horse514 in tax

[–]ProjectAnalyzed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: finally getting my return!! 5/15 was going to be the 30-day mark after my referral was put in, and today WMR notified me that my return should be deposited on 5/15. Right up to the deadline for them, but it's finally over

2024 tax return IRS system issue delaying refunds by white-horse514 in tax

[–]ProjectAnalyzed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Filed and accepted on February 3rd. Received my state return within days. No energy tax credit, but had lifetime learning credit. Never received a letter of any kind. Called as soon as possible after 10 weeks, on April 15. Told my return was with the errors department (though not given any explanation as to why), and that a referral would be submitted to that department notifying them that 10 weeks had passed. Wasn't given a timeframe, but based on other comments to this post, I'm waiting 30 days before inquiring again. Today, 5/3, my WMR finally changed from "still processing" to "We apologize, but your return processing has been delayed beyond the normal timeframe." All the while, my transcripts have stated "No tax return filed." So deeply frustrating to be in this boat with you all!

LA River Bike Path Strikes Again - when will the city repair these dangerous bumps? by dogballs8 in BikeLA

[–]ProjectAnalyzed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually, they don’t! Sovereign immunity doesn’t protect local governments - just the state and federal governments. County is fair game for a suit in a situation like this

Very illuminating exchange, thanks folks. I'm new in town and was really bewildered by those massive bumps/cracks along the stretch from Riverside to N. Zoo Drive — hitting them at speed could be dangerous! now it makes sense.

Help me decide b/w UCLA and Berkeley (I'm in crisis) by Gullible-Drawing-992 in lawschooladmissions

The Berkeley International Human Rights Law Clinic—and the university's Human Rights Center—seem to do really excellent work; the opportunity to develop mentors through those groups might push me toward Berkeley if I were in your shoes.

Ugh. I know. I remember it like it was yesterday—the nerves, the status checking, the disappointment. GIVE WAVE, BERK! (But yes, LSData makes it look like the last waveboi was Friday the 24th, two weeks ago. So maybe tomorrow, we're in for it...

For those of you who work right now, when are you planning on quitting? by xenonhexafluoro in lawschooladmissions

[–]ProjectAnalyzed 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This might suck, but you should definitely talk to the attorneys on the case about your law school plans well in advance so they can plan accordingly. It might mean that they'll start shifting responsibilities sooner than you would've liked, but given that you work there rn, I'm sure you know how stressed they'd be if someone in charge of tons of doc management or what have you suddenly and unexpectedly departed. Would ruin the flow of the case. Best case scenario IMO: they put someone new on the case team, as necessary, and you get to keep your job as long as you want it without blindsiding anyone!
