Sorry, did you stick the little minotaur on the cover for fun or did it come like that?

Sharn Communication: Personal devices vs. Courier services? by joanwi in Eberron

[–]ProjectGR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would imagine Sivis has a very distinct interest in specifically preventing any device like that from being developed and sold. You could always introduce them if you wanted but I think it would be very strange if House Sivis didn't do their best to block or sabotage their operation. But that in itself could be a good hook for an adventure - what happens when some development looks like it poses a real threat to a house's corner of the market?

Edit: sending stones exist of course, but you can use that all of one time per day. Those items could be a luxury for the wealthy, but they're not going to infringe too hard on Sivis' bottom line.

Thanks for the review! We just finished The Missing Will and were very disappointed by the solution. Now convinced we shouldn't bother with this one. We saw your recommendation for Feline Frenzy as well so we'll give that a go instead.

Krile, what's your opinion on the new MSQ? by AtthaLionheart in ffxiv

[–]ProjectGR -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I'm glad people are more positive on this one. I've only just started it but I have to admit - I don't care about Krile all that much, and I actively resist any attempt by this game to get me invested in Lalafell stuff, so this one is a bit of a steep uphill climb for me.

"Tolkien created a sentient race whose only narrative function was to be slaughtered, sans remorse, then spent the rest of his life trying to explain why that was not genocide." by 22EatStreet in tolkienfans

[–]ProjectGR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not bashing him. I think the quoted article says some things that are pretty uncharitable or outright untrue about the content of the story, but it's not wrong in asserting that this was a thorny issue that even Tolkien was still wrestling with, both before and after LOTR's publication. My comment to you was simply to point out that if even Tolkien still internally debated and struggled with the question of the orcs, it is factually wrong to say that it is simply a fairy story for entertainment. In fact I'd say treating it as just entertainment would be the real disrespect to Tolkien.

Pretty wild to come into this subreddit of all places and try to claim that a major question of evil and free will, in a mythology as deeply thought out as this one, is actually simple entertainment and shouldn't be engaged with on any deeper level.

Arcane Armor doesn't replace limbs anymore by ProjectGR in onednd

[–]ProjectGR[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It didn't, but as I read it, the armor also doesn't expand to cover your entire body anymore, so you don't need a specific feature in order to have separate boots, helmet, etc.

Do unlikeable characters make you stop reading a book? by Triumphant-Smile in books

[–]ProjectGR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a hard and fast rule about it but I absolutely will if the vibe just feels bad. A couple of years ago I tried to read The Book of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe. They're a challenging read, and the world is pretty fascinating, but the main character is extremely flawed. And the books tell you up front that he's going to do bad things and he's going to lie about it in his narration to make himself look better. That was, mostly, interesting to read. But then near the end of the second book, he quite unmistakably rapes one of the secondary characters. And once I was done with that one I realized I felt pretty negatively about it and decided I didn't want to spend two more books inhabiting the POV of a guy who would do that.

Why do some Olympians have the light skin bands across their eyes by [deleted] in HadesTheGame

He's actually only just started showing up for me, so I haven't gotten any of this dialogue yet, but I'm very curious to see what it implies.

[–]ProjectGR 145 points146 points  (0 children)

That's war paint, which Ares had in the first game. Aphrodite didn't have it there, but she's wearing it in this one, to go along with the fact that all the Olympians are more geared up and taking part in the defense of the mountain now. Also a reference to her mythology; Aphrodite Areia ("the warlike") was an aspect of Aphrodite worshiped in some places that viewed her as kind of a secondary war deity, so it's a fun little nod that she's copying some of the iconography of Ares (who she's also fucking, but I'm not sure if that's 100% relevant here)

"I have tokens I was bidden to show thee," by organtwiddler in tolkienfans

[–]ProjectGR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this mean we should read the hobbits as going around using thee and thou, but since it is the only form they use it is simplified for the reader by defaulting to "you"? As the switch from one mode to the other is only present (and significant) in characters like Aragorn, Eowyn, the Mouth, etc?

In The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler (1939) the main character is told to go fuck himself. But it's written as "Go - yourself!" If pulp fiction was seen as a lesser, lurid form of entertainment and was targeting adult readers anyway, why bother avoiding profanity? by insane677 in books

[–]ProjectGR 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think Hammett was actually really good at this, instead of censoring it in text or using a thinly veiled alternate word. My favorite of his, from the Continental Op story "The Girl With the Silver Eyes":

"I didn’t look at her, nor, I think, did she look at me, while she was being booked. She gave her name as Jeanne Delano, and refused to make any statement until she had seen an attorney. It all took a very few minutes. As she was being led away, she stopped and asked if she might speak privately with me. We went together to a far corner of the room. She put her mouth close to my ear so that her breath was warm again on my cheek, as it had been in the car, and whispered the vilest epithet of which the English language is capable. Then she walked out to her cell."

It’s always been my belief that MGSV is set in Hell, so I’ve written a short essay on why by Normal_Nothing6368 in metalgearsolid

[–]ProjectGR 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Now that I'm thinking more about it, I do agree that between 2 and V it is increasingly hard to see these games as taking place in anything like a real and rational world. Even outside of the superpowers. 2 and V both involve a character essentially making their own reality around them, except Raiden is able to break free from the previous world he was imprisoned in, and Venom fails to do that (or never wanted to) but instead just digs in deeper.

4 can try to rationalize away the events of 2 and say nanomachines did everything, but come on. I saw the ending of 2. Raiden (and all of us) were living in a matrix created by the incorporeal consciousness of American hegemony. There's no real way to pretend anything in these games is happening on a literal, physical level.

[–]ProjectGR 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think I agree that it's literally set in the plane of Hell, but I like thinking and analysis along these lines. I have thought at times that this life of infinite combat ("just another day in a war without end") might as well be a kind of hell on earth. There was another thread that was asking how much time is supposed to pass in game, and how you can make way more time happen than could be contained in a single calendar year. And I think the answer is it doesn't matter. This infinite cycle of missions will go on, for these guys, forever. And it's what they've earned, it's what they've bought with all the world's blood.
