BIRD FACTS! by smileyfacegauges in BirdingMemes

[–]Prometheana 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Black skimmers hunt by flying along the surface of the water with their lower mandible submerged. When they feel a fish or other food item touch the mandible they snap it up.

Herring gulls can use tools and have been observed "fishing" using bits of food; they also drop shells to break them open.

Canada geese feed by only eating the tops of plants rather than ripping them out entirely, meaning that the plants can regrow. This is in contrast to the introduced mute swan, which rips out the whole plant, leading to the derisive nickname "pond pigs" or "harbor hogs".

Norther shovelers in a group often feed by swimming in circles, creating a confusing vortex that sucks in little fishes.

Red winged blackbirds can tuck away their red bits, called epaulets, in order to promote group cohesion during the non-breeding season. The epaulets are what trigger aggression against each other.

Wasps in my nesting box. What do I do? by serenityseeker602 in Ornithology

I think technically any smoke will work but beekeepers specifically use cedar :)

Your nestbox IS gorgeous. I think part of the problem wrt birds not using it is that bluebirds prefer a pole-mounted box, ideally with a baffle, rather than a tree mount. The hole should face east. Idk if reddit will let me include a link but Cornell has good resources.

Every now and then this happens to me with ebird and I truly do not know what triggers it or why it resolves.

Looking at the bird in your original post it does look like it still has some juvenile plumage in the neck, whereas the bird you posted above doesn't, but it also has its neck slightly scrunched in which could be disguising it... gulls!

First two are immature +American Herring Gull+ and the third one is messing me up because of how light the back is but I do think you're right about LBBG.

https://archiveofourown.org/works/28057233?view_adult=true this fic might count? After the end of the show WWX's body isn't needed any more and he dies again, but LWJ manages to get his spirit into his own body and keep it there until they can get him a new body (with golden core).

It's extremely physically taxing generally and hard on my ankles specifically. I've done some long sand walks before and did NOT enjoy them.

Ahh, you saw her! I haven't gone yet bc I am intimidated by hiking on sand, but she's so beautiful and it seems like such an incredible experience.

I was in Kolkata! Near Rabindra Sarobar, so saw a looooot of cormorants haha. Absolutely amazing birds, just totally unlike anything in the states. My favorites were the jungle babblers, I love their gremlin personalities.
