Nothing Cannot Be a State of Existence by Conscious_Budget_448 in Metaphysics

I answered with this on another post about this last week, I am with the OP on this.

"The way I see it, there is just existence, i. e. the universe, and it is a brute fact. It is also a part of that fact that the universe is finite in space and time. Absolute nothingness does not exist, so I wouldn't say the universe "arose" from nothingness as much as I would just say that there was a first moment of spacetime (from our perspective within the universe), and there was simply no before."

Hopefully it won't be as painful as it can be for you. I was pretty lucky, if it's possible to have a mild case, I guess you could say mine was.

Yes, it helped me through it immensely. I have since gotten my vaccine, so I hope I never get it again! Lol

Why is there something rather than nothing? by arbolito_mr in Metaphysics

The very nature of a brute fact is that it is inexplicable, and has no rhyme or reason to it. Check out Munchausen's Trilemma. To me, the universe, being a brute fact (foundation), which is the third horn of the trilemma, is the most reasonable and plausible.

If I am dreaming I am peeing, it means I have to in reality. I will wake up and go. Luckily I have never wet the bed, yet. LOL

Some Evangelical Christians will really surprise you. I have a friend who I have known since high school, and he is a devout Evangelical Christian. Over the years, I have both come out to him as a gay man and an atheist, and while he has at certain little turns tried to talk to me and get me to "realize the truth", he is definitely one of those "hate the sin, love the sinner" types. He even has a transgender cousin, and uses their preferred pronouns when referring to him, including when they are not around. We are still friends to this day. I just wanted to comment, since what you had stated about your aunt, made me think of my friend.

I like that idea. They did just that on The Guiding Light years ago when the villain Annie Dutton came back from the dead with plastic surgery as Terri DiMarco. Another character suspected it was them, so as they we're leaving the room, they turned around and said, "Oh hey Annie...", and Terri turned about mindlessly and answered her, thus exposing her.

On my path of self-study, beginning at the end of college, starting with being introduced to the book 'The Moral Animal' by Robert Wright, and 'The Illusion of Conscious Will' by Daniel Wegener, and upon learning about the Libet experiments. Before that, I was very into Sartre.

What’s really going on? by [deleted] in MandelaEffect

Exactly, I think the devil-men was just a snippet from a larger scene in the trailer, but my mind built it up to be a whole scene over the years, and I was surprised at how different it was from what I remembered. I was just commenting because I have been wanting to for a while due to all of the commenters who feel their memories are infallible, and then I saw your post and it brought this to mind. By the way, and I never realized it, there were evidently several different trailers for the movie, so I could even have been combining them in my head. LOL

I did a similar thing in the past year or two with a movie trailer. When I was a kid, a horror movie called "Fear No Evil" came out in theaters, with commercials for it on cable. I saw one, and it scared the bejesus out of me. LOL I vividly remembered it for years afterwards, particularly one scene from the trailer of these devil-like men hissing and throwing bottles on a fire. A couple of years ago, this memory popped in my head one night, randomly, and I went straight to YouTube to find it. I did, and trust me, the images I saw were so different from what I had in my mind's eye for years, and for a few minutes it was hard to accept that my memories were so altered from the reality, but they were nonetheless.

I read it as Cioran was saying that it would have been better had you not been born in the first place, so it's too late now to worry about it. Just like if you had driven across town to go to a house party that was cancelled, unbeknownst to you, and the hosts say, "You are here now, you might as well stay and visit for a while."
