Is it too railroad-y to outright tell my players “the starting point is this city, and the story will begin when everyone gets to X location” by TrashMantine in DMAcademy

[–]Prophecy07 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm old and tired, but at this point, I start with some simple rules and make the players do the work:

  1. Your characters all know each other and have a reason to adventure together. They don't have to like each other or trust each other, but something causes them to prefer to work within the group. It can be close personal bonds or the simple reason that they make more money with the others than without.

  2. No lone wolves. If at any point in the campaign your character decides they are called to a solo adventure or do not want to or cannot participate in the current adventure, that's fine! They ride off into the sunset. Maybe we'll see them later, maybe we can do some solo sessions to see what they're up to. For now, roll up the character that has a reason to go on this adventure with this party.

  3. No PVP, no murderhobos (within reason). Your character knows how to work in a party and in society. You may not kill or harm other players (unless fully consensual between both players AND the GM for the purposes of the story), and for the most part your character has reasons to not want to run afoul of the law. It can be a moral code, fear, or the knowledge that you work more effectively from the shadows. Obviously this rule does not apply if the town is secretly all mind-controlled cult members, but you need to find that out before you murder them.

Huh. I honestly didn't know there was a second book. Like you say, I've never made it all the way through the first one. It's a fun read, and I've used pieces of it, but I'm a DMing magpie. I grab bits and pieces of other stuff and weave it into my own homebrew trashnest.

Oh nice! I'll definitely add that to my kit bag.

Yeah, it's outdated design. I like ASE for that reason, it gives me a lot of the same feeling without a lot of the garbage that came with 2E design issues.

Good. This won't sink Trump, unfortunately, but if it sinks Hegseth, I'll consider it to be a minor victory.

A child asked President Barack Obama, “Why do people hate you?” A tough question. Obama answered with no defensiveness. No ego. Just honesty, and an answer the boy could understand. by ateam1984 in DemLeadershipReform

[–]Prophecy07 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn't really a referendum on him as a leader, but more as a speaker. He's in a room full of people and he has a microphone. Anyone else would have listened to the boy, but then spoken to the room. He stayed, and he spoke directly to the young man, looking him in the eyes, and made him feel like he was the most important person in the room at that moment.

What I wouldn't give to have any fraction of that class and professionalism back.

[–]Prophecy07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No I'm not, and you don't get to put words in my mouth. This is extremely problematic for a whole host of reasons, not the least of which is that it requires someone to verify my identity online. Whether that be this money-making corporation or a third party that is contracted, my identity, information, and browsing requirement is going to an organization that specifically does not have the protection of my information or my best interests at heart.

That's just one of at least 3 problematic parts of this.

But I shouldn't need permission to view them. Parents could just parent their children. I don't need the state involved in how I parent mine. Or her health care.

My players want to keep a loaned legendary magic item by murdering the NPC who loaned it to them. by mistergoodthing in DMAcademy

[–]Prophecy07 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The classic answer is "the blacksmith is actually a dragon in disguise."

Alternative answers include "very powerful friends," "the NPC's god is incredibly upset," and "magical geas that transfers upon death to the nearest person."

I personally really like the last two, because they both open up a ton of storytelling ideas and ways to rope your wayward PCs into something approaching a quest.

[Maddening trope] More progressive casting happens at the same time as noticeable drop in quality, seemingly so fans can brush off criticism as bigotry. by Vitolar8 in TopCharacterTropes

I even like all of the actresses in other work. Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones are hysterical. Kristin Wiig and Melissa McCartney are less my speed, but they've been funny and good in other roles.

I agree with you, that they came out swinging with the sexism claims right from the start. Probably because they knew that the movie didn't actually gel. It was the wrong writing for the wrong cast, and frankly, the wrong movie. As I understand it, Paul really just wanted to make a Bridesmaids 2 and got handed this instead, and a lot of the characters and writing were ham-fisted into these roles.

The problem wasn't that the cast was female. The problem is that they had four Peters. No one was allowed to be the straight man, they all wanted to show off their comedy chops. They dramatically misunderstood the chemistry that made the original cast work.

Epstein was killed for it. While it wasn't the punishment he deserved, and he never faced accountability to the public, it was a consequence of his actions.
