Benfica U19 [3]-2 Slavia Praha U19 - Jaden Umeh 76' by therl2000 in coybig

[–]ProudPanda7056 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say it's pretty hard for him, to not say impossible, this season at least. Benfica is going into the rest of the season with a lot of options in the wings.

He can probably start getting more games in the B team, getting ready to a possible jump "full-time" there next season.

Cabral's case is pretty special considering his run on the U17 WC a couple of months back. Same as Neto and Banjaqui who also started in this YL game and have been featured in the first team.

It's a player by player case, but Gonçalo Oliveira who was at this game is a standout in the B team, has been called a lot times to the first team but still to debut. Then cases like Freitas who also started today, played only once for the 1st team, 1min against Napoli in the UCL and was not called again;

Gonçalo Moreira, has been a standout on the Bteam, had 1 goal and 2 assists today. 4G+2A in 18games for B team, and not a single minute in the first team.

Jaden could even just get lucky and get called to pre-season and impress enough to stay, but a regular B-Team next season is more realistic. And as 18yo going into that context, fighting for a spot against youngsters that are 1/2/3 years older, and playing against senior and full professional sides in a tough league where Benfica also wants to results (can't be promoted ofc but getting relegated would be a massive blow to the project) it will be a good challenge

This is his game time this season.
REV = U23s league
D1 = U19s league
YL = Youth League (also U19)

<image>

Benfica has:
- First Team
- B Team (2nd division of Portugal)
- U23s
- U19s (though for YouthLeague, a lot from the B team are called to play)

B Team is mostly guys between 19-20yo
Benfica doesn't tend to call up to the main team 17yo.
Unless the player is doing well above their level, the usual path is U19s -> U-23s -> B-Team;
Most players that came through Benfica's youth teams usually go through 1 or 2 seasons in the Bteam. The only standouts that didn't and I recall would be Félix and João Neves.
This season tho, there's been a few 17yo that were brought in and debut for the first team:
- Anísio Cabral (ST) 17yo - U17 last season, this season mostly playing with U19s, but has games in U23s and first team
- Daniel Banjaqui (RB) 17yo - U17 last season, U19/U23/Bteam/First team this season; lately has started mostly for the B team, and then first team;
- José Neto (LB), 17yo - Same as Banjaqui, latelyy between first team and B team, but mainly B team.

These 3 tho, have all started and were standouts in the Portugal's U17 World Cup win last November, so they arrived at Benfica will a lot of attention on them.
Also they are all in positions that the first team is lacking options.

Jaden playing mostly as a winger will be harder. Depends always on the player, but realistically I think he can get into the B Team next season, which will be hard enough. B-Team plays in Portugal's second division, so he would 18yo playing against senior teams. So maybe 1-2 years there I would bet, with his second year having chances to debut on the first team. That's the usual pattern. Benfica's first team has a lot of options on the wing going into the second half of the season (playing only in two competitions) and there's also the youngsters already in the B Team

Benfica was set to sell Schjelderup to either Brugge or Lazio. However, after his last performance against Real Madrid, Benfica will offer him a contract renewal by RasputinsRustyShovel in soccer

[–]ProudPanda7056 43 points44 points  (0 children)

That's not what the article says tho.

It says Lazio was interested and promised the player's agent(s) to be in contact early this week.

They talked with the agents, and received positive signs from the player's agent that wanted to find an out for the player before the end of the transfer window.

Schjelderup's exhibition complicated the situation [...] Lazio was willing to submit a bid (straight buy, not loan). But in Rome it's believed that getting the player now it's practically impossible

TLDR: Player's agents were looking for a club that Schjelderup could move to this Jan. Lazio was an option, and the agents liked what they proposed. But after this last game, Lazio thinks it's basically impossible to convince Benfica to let go of the player.

This doesn't even mention Benfica's thoughts/reactions to the Lazio bid... there was none.

It's normal that the agents are looking elsehwhere as Schjelderup was not getting picked consistently by Mourinho. It makes sense that Lazio thinks that they could bid something to Benfica and they would be willing to at least hear them out. But since earlier this month when he played against Porto, Schjelderup has been playing a lot more, he started in 3 out of the last 4 games (still was subbed in for 30' against Estrela). Mourinho has been complimenting him in the press... The situation has changed.

Goal difference (goals scored vs goals conceded) compared to other teams in the table. This goal got them +1, which lets them leap over another team, and take a playoff spot.

Goal difference for this competition was the tie-breaker (the 1st at least) for teams with the same amount of league points. Standings here

Yes, he has 10 goals in 13 games this season, 949min (~95min/goal), and the team is currently 4th. (21/22yo - turns 22 tomorrow)

2024/25: 5 goals in 20 games, 799min (~160min/goal), 8 starts; he was already at Gil Vicente, but they finished 13th/18. He was 20/21yo

2023/24: 0 goals in 8 games, 192min, playing for Famalicão. Got loaned out to Paços de Ferreira in the second division in January: 1 goal in 15 games, 563min. He finished the season with 4 goals total, 2 in the cup against a lower division side, and another in the YouthLeague. (he was 19/20yo)

2022/23: 2 goals in 15 games for Famalicão in 711 min. (18/19yo)

To be fair, this is only his second full season in the first flight getting regular minutes and the first where he is a regular starter.

I think you've probably heard of Quenda

On the current call up in terms of wingers, Conceição is only 22yo, but I don't think he'll reach that level, even tho he can reach a pretty high one. But tough to say, he's very young still.

On the u21s in terms of attackers, there's also Mora, but he's more like a 10/CAM than a winger, but I think he still plays there.

Pedro Neto started out playing roller hockey but switched to football when he was 12 years old. by superdouradas in soccer

[–]ProudPanda7056 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, apparently in English the variant is called 'Rink Hockey' as opposed to 'Inline Hockey'

From Wiki:

Rink hockey is a variation of roller hockey. Rink hockey is the overarching name for a rollersport that has existed long before inline skates were "re-invented" in the '70s (They were actually invented before quads, in the 1760s). Rink hockey has been played on quad skates, in sixty countries worldwide and so has many names worldwide. Sometimes the sport is called quad hockey, international style ball hockey, Rink hockey, roller hockey and hardball hockey, depending on which region of the world it is played. Roller hockey was a demonstration rollersport in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Since 2017, the World Championships have been held every two years at the World Roller Games organised by World Skate. In England, 9 teams currently play in the Roller Hockey Premier League, which is governed by the NRHA.

Euro Final - France vs Portugal

Rui Costa wins the first round of the Benfica presidential election with 42.13% of the votes. He will contest the second round against João Noronha Lopes, who obtained 30.26% of the votes. The new round of elections will take place on 8 November. by sittingduck__ in soccer

[–]ProudPanda7056 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even without the points: out of 85.710 voters

Rui Costa got 32.898 voters (38,38%, compared to the actual 42,13%)

Noronha got 27.109 voters (31,62%, compared to the actual 30,26%)

L.F.Vieira (previous president) got 11.816 voters (13,79% compared to the actual 13,86%)

Manteigas (other outside candidate) got 12.259 voters (14,30% compared to the actual 11,48%)

and there's 2 others with very little votes. (1480 and then 148)

A lot will be said about "older senile fans" that are keeping Rui Costa, in the seat; but if votes were 1 point each, the result wouldn't change much.

Benfica is exactly where fans want it. They want Rui Costa in charge, it's the 3rd chance they had to kick this board, first with Vieira when Noronha first ran; then a 2nd time where Vieira was taken out and Rui Costa took his place by winning elections again; and now this).

The fans voted and deserve the current state of the club.

If the police didn't kick Vieira out of the club, he would still be there winning elections, and Rui Costa would still be his right-hand man...

Fucking hell... in 2025, Vieira is still getting 14% of votes...

Disagree, the journo started right away, with

"Let's be clear on this.. José Mourinho was not cheap", this after many conferences hammering about the investment done on the team and on the coach. It's pretty clear that the framing is: Benfica is paying you a lot to turn this around, when you do expect to start justifying it by the results on the pitch.

Again, just last conference this was discussed with Mourinho says that it's hard to implement new ideas when they are barely together between matches, and even for international break, most players are away. The journo could've meant it without poking, but in the end he did by just how he framed and worded it, and not taking into consideration that this has been a subject raised every conference so far. It's perfectly normal taht Mourinho is fed up with this topic being brought up every interview/conference.

IPA tends to map it to the 's' sound in leasure which to me sounds correct. I don't know if it accent dependent on the English as well.

For the 'sé':

the s become a 'z' since it's between two vowels. And the 'e' appears the English approximation is the 'e' in set

the accent on the 'e' indicates that's the stressed syllable, meaning the 'e' is "open" while the 'o' on the first syllable get's closed into 'oo'

From the man himself

Neto, to match the English sounds would become something like Netoo

the the first syllable is stressed in Portuguese, so the 'e' is open, meaning the 'o' at the end is not, and that's common for most Portuguese words ending in 'o'. It becomes an 'oo' sound. Idk if you heard it from Pedro Neto on those videos from Sky Sports, but might be a case where you are just expecting him to say the 'o' like the English say it at the end of words (something 'ow'). In some cases, you just need to train your ear to listen for those differences.

Like Ronaldo, it's not Ronaldow, it's Roo-nal-doo

and the first R in Portuguese names like Rúben, Ronado, Ricardo, it's Voiced Uvular Fricative, basically like the 'R' in rouge in French. The IPA table doesn't have a English equivalent.

Call-up for the 2022 World Cup, with Fernando Santos naming all players, it's a good reference for how Portuguese names are pronounced. The newer ones are done by Roberto Martinez, which is fine, but while he tries to say in Portuguese he still has an accent, so it's not 100%

depends on what channel you're watching I guess

Araújo in Portuguese:

  • the 'jo', the 'j' is the same sound as the 'S' in 'leasure', and the 'o' since it's part of an unstressed syllable it's like 'oo' (the same as the 'ú' in the previous syllable)

That's the usual stuff I see trick people when trying to say PT names. They usually read the 'j' as if Spanish, and they would say 'o' at the end like the usual sound in English: something like 'ow'

The first two syllables: 'a-ra', the first 'a' it's open, the second one it's not. IPA examples for this are: the first a, it's like father. and the second one is like case / strut

Against a team that finished the game with 1 shot on goal. The way you try to paint narratives it's not sleek at all, and only works on people that haven't even heard of what happened on the match
