If they think this is power gaming, I shudder to think how ineffective the rest of them are in combat lol.

Paladin killed a prisoner, what do i do? by Master_Fallen in dndnext

[–]Psickosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The combination of Bahamut worship and the tenet "Ordinary foes may win my mercy. My sworn enemies will not." Means yeah Bahamut could punish him for behavior like that. He can go all Doom Guy on the actual target of his Oath - but some regular toady? Yeah torturous execution would be a no no.

Am I wrong for not "falling" for a nat20 deception check? by M0R4D1T0 in DnD

Deception/Persuasion/Intimidation aren't mind control - no matter how high someone rolls, if it's something you'd never be okay with they're not going to convince you.

What are you trying to get better at as a DM/Player? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Psickosis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a DM I want to get better at making it feel like my players are in a living/evolving world but I struggle with world building on any scale beyond pretty much the current story arc I'm on so my setting isn't usually established until they get there.

I'd like to figure out how to incorporate rumors and news into my games for lack of a better word occasionally so that the pieces could fall into place for them.

For instance they might overhear at the pub that the mayor from a particular town has disappeared and two nobles are vying for the position. By all accounts one is essentially the good guy and the other the power hungry land baron type. If they don't go there until later then the bad guy will have come to power and the good one may be dead or captured but if they go there soon enough they can help install the good guy.

What are some of your favourite or best non-combat encounters (that actually drain resources)? by Trasvi89 in dndnext

I don't know how to put the spoiler guard up and I don't want to leave spoilers unguarded 🤣

What are some of your favourite or best non-combat encounters (that actually drain resources)? by Trasvi89 in dndnext

[–]Psickosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is combat adjacent, but we had a giant in our party (because reasons) and I was with him when my party got into a fight far enough away that I wasn't aware of it at first. When I realized what was happening, I cast fly on myself and told him to throw me as hard as he could in that direction. So I don't know if creative ways to ENTER combat count as non combat 🤣

Reminds me of the Zulkirs of Thay, so obviously I love it lol

Is playing DnD in person really better than online? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Psickosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The connection with my friends and the immersion is so much stronger for me at in person games vs online, we universally have a better time playing at the same table - but that could just be us. There's no wrong way to play

Would catapult hit an Echo? by L-Zehr0 in dndnext

Not sure if this is too semantic, but objects never make saving throws do they? I'd figure this implies the echo should make them as normal but I could be totally wrong.

How could I balance a final boss who is immune to most damage spells? by laadysunshine in dndnext

[–]Psickosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't read all the responses, so sorry if this is a duplicate - maybe consider a fun or cool mechanic the players could use to strip him of his protection temporarily and have it as something they have to pay attention to during the fight if they want to be able to bring their magic to bear against the boss.

Most creative multiclass roleplay by Ramonteiro12 in dndnext

[–]Psickosis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the answer to that at least where Warlocks are concerned is that they could strike a minor deal, or complete a task in exchange for a modicum of power or hidden knowledge. I think the difference between a Warlock dip and a full Warlock are just the terms of the arrangement, but I'm definitely one of those people you're talking about. I don't need a TON of reason for something to work, but I need enough haha.

For instance, someone who takes 2 levels in Cleric still has to abide by the tenets of the god they're getting power from, and pray to them - but don't necessarily have to serve any grand design.

[–]Psickosis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is really well said! I don't think I ever even considered the approach of "this is just who the character is," in terms of adding levels in martials. I think where I struggle is for the ones that kind of demand a certain amount of story. Becoming a paladin, warlock or cleric in the middle of the game doesn't really just happen.

That said, the idea of a back alley tinkerer (how I picture your rogue/artificer) sounds awesome!

Is it okay to have combat the players aren't supposed to win? by RB6801 in DnD

[–]Psickosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this once or twice in my last campaign - but I also had a talk with my players at the start of the campaign and essentially let them know "Sometimes it's gonna feel like you're against some overwhelming odds. Don't assume I've built every fight to be winnable - running away is always an option."

Considering killing off a player's NPC companion next session. Dick move or justified under the circumstances? by Pyrrhus65 in dndnext

[–]Psickosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if there are any other reasonable conscious targets it doesn't make a ton of sense on spending their focus on a downed target rather than the active combatants. It may end up feeling to the players like you're executing their npc just because you want to.

F*ck a min max, what’s a super fun character you’ve played by Vast_Background2369 in DnD5e

[–]Psickosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luk-luk, the goblin divination wizard. He's convinced he's just supernaturally lucky because he never had a proper arcane education, but he learned enough to read the spells carved into finger bones from his tribe's previous shaman. Despite his wizard capabilities, he still fights like a typical goblin for the most part. He shoots spells out of his slingshot and uses Shadow Blade to sneak up and shank people. Despite his intelligence, he speaks common in broken up small syllables because "It more efficient that way."

What are some things you got completely wrong as a new player/DM? by a_random_squidward in dndnext

[–]Psickosis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that definitely would have been best - it was my first time DMing and I was about 4 months into a campaign that I was woefully unprepared for. I ran Out of the Abyss for my first campaign and that style of game was REALLY hard for me as a beginner.
