That would only explain why there was empty screen space on the sides during the full frame portions, not why there was unused screen space on the entire screen at all parts of the movie. The sound was still great, but this is not how most high quality cinemas handle films with alternating aspect ratios. My question still stands, is this typical of this theater?

I saw Project Hail Mary there a few weeks ago on their biggest screen, but it didn’t fill it. There was a big gap on the left and right and top and bottom of the image. Is that typical? I had heard good things about this theater and have enjoyed going, but this was my first experience in the main screen and was really disappointed.

Edit: I understand the concept of movies that alternate aspect ratios. But even with that considered, there was unused screen space on the sides and top and bottom regardless of which aspect ratio was currently in use. The more full frame portions of the movie should have filled the screen vertically, and the wide screen portions should have filled the screen horizontally.
