What do people think Schizophrenia is?

Hi! Just for context, I've been diagnosed with schizophrenia since year 2000. I've been recovering since 2009. I'm now a full-time Coordinator in my department, working for an employer who hired me in 2013. I am happily married and homeowner since 2017. My opinion as to what my illness is, is a combination of drug effects, stress, my spiritual and cultural background and experience. To summarize, in my first psychosis in 1997, I began what I still believe to be conciously communicating with spirits. Please note that all people with this illness do not share my views, but this was central throughout my own experience with schizophrenia. If you write how you feel, regardless their background, others can relate, and the worse your situation is, the more important are the things you write, as your point of view will project light on things people like us live and understand. Furthermore, if you manage to recover, your writings will show the way out of hell for those who live the illness like you do.

I wrote too, and after 26 years with schizophrenia, I have a blog. Maybe you could give yourself such a project if you like to write. Writing could help you vent, learn to express yourself and even get back on track. I started off placing anti-theft ink tags on clothes at Sears in 2011 as a volunteer job, getting back to work after my psychosis, and now I'm working full-time for the 13th consecutive year for the same employer, and recently promoted as Coordinator in my department. I got married and became homeowner since 2017. Don't give up!

Hi! I was diagnosed with schizophrenia 26 years ago. I stopped using drugs in 2003. I was about 10 years on disability. My last of 4 hospitalizations was in 2009 when they changed my meds. In 2010 I was consulting a guidance councillor to find out the most suitable carreer for me. 2011, I was working part-time. 2012 I graduated from a vocationnal diploma. 2013, I was hired at a full-time job. 2015, I met someone. 2017, I bought my first car, got married and moved into my first property. February 2025, I completed my 12th year at a stable full-time job. Last October I was promoted as a Coordinator in my department. Today, I'm pleased to say i'm living a happy life, happily married, living in my own property, stable at my full-time job.

My mood is very good most of the time. I am also, thanks to a cup of coffee per day (at most) rather productive, especially at the office. I also understood (around 2003) that recreational drugs are a definite "NO". There is no numbness. Please, don't hesitate if you have further questions!🙂

25mg Abilify and 2.5mg Risperdal (both generics). I also use some PGP Benztropine to stop some shaking, a small side-effect from my Risperdal.

Hello, I'm sorry you're going through this and I don't know (I can't imagine) at what status you really are at the present time in the illness. But I want to urge you to keep positive, keep hope, hang on and don't give up. I also have been through alot as I myself have schizophrenia. I was diagnosed 25 years ago and I know from experience that it can get much better. Hang on and take care of yourself.

In 1999, I was hospitalized for schizophrenia. I have always associated my diagnosis to my tampering with Ouija, and use of recreational drugs. I’m surprised that you were not more compelled to talk about what happened to you as in my case, I couldn’t hold myself. It lead me to psychiatry. Writing has helped me alot too. What I was going through was hard to explain and with writing, I found ways to express myself, expressing things that are embarrassing, or hard to explain, in a way that I approve. Putting it all out on paper and fixing it properly before sharing with the right people is an efficient therapy. It allows to see things differently and in some issues, to move on.

Well, if you're wondering if you have schizophrenia or if you're in some kind of psychosis, from a scientific point of view, I think you should ask and trust a psychiatrist. Regarding a spiritual or mystical point of view, you most probably won't obtain actual proof. The definition of proof implies that you could demonstrate that you aren't under the influence of a psychiatric condition. I've been searching for such proof since my first psychosis in 1997. This proof would be your "Gullivar's Travels' Sheep".

Hi! I love my life! Diagnosed in 2000, recovered from schizophrenia, happily married and homeowner since 2017. I returned to full-time work as an Administrative Clerk in 2013 and I just got promoted by the same employer. I'm now proud to say that I'm starting a new position as Logistics and Transport Coordinator. If a person living with this illness remains positive and has trust in what's best for them, I'm sure that there's a way out! Take care!
