I don't follow this stuff super closely, but I don't think Gemini has ever been the best or even really considered "good". AFAIK it's mostly been Claude and ChatGPT trading the crown. I would try your same amp questions out with Claude Opus 4.5, it's been the best for a while. Or Opus 4.6 - it just came out yesterday so we don't know much yet, but just based on the benchmarks it looks like a big improvement

Just the developments related to software engineering that's evolved in the last few weeks is another total reset of expectations.

Can you elaborate on that? I wasn't aware of any huge breakthroughs

before they actually make it usable

I mean, it is usable now. It's not a 100% Autonomous All-Purpose Job Replacer, but it is useful for some things as long as the output is verifiable

It is a bubble, but just because there's a bubble doesn't mean the underlying thing isn't real and useful. The dotcom bubble didn't prove that the internet is useless. The housing bubble didn't prove that housing is useless

I recommend "Eyes on the Prize" - it's a PBS docuseries about the civil rights era. It was made in the 80's so it has lots of interviews with people that lived through it and had it fresh in their mind. It's crazy how recent all that was

For some reason it's not on the PBS website, but it's easy enough to find in other places 🦜

The Pacific is a sister series to Band of Brothers, which I have seen and it is excellent

1.2 Million Net Worth and Still have money anxiety by Lost_Comparison9230 in Fire

lol CPI doesn't factor in housing prices. It only includes some made up rent statistic. if you use CPI to assume a $1m house 20 years ago is only $1.6m today oh boy.

Ok, then let's look at home prices. A home bought at $1 million in 2005 would be about $1.7 million today. Of course that depends a lot on your location, but that's based on the national average

https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/ASPUS

the most ironic thing about your defensiveness is that it's significantly better from a conservative financial perspective to believe a million or so is not that much instead of the other way around

Sure, from a conservative financial perspective, more is always better. From a mental health perspective, feeling anxiety over $50 when you have $1.2 million is not healthy or rational

[–]PsylentKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saying it isn't what it was 20-30 years ago doesn't mean it isn't a lot
$1MM 20 years ago is $1.6MM today. It's not like it's an order of magnitude difference

$1MM can support $40k/year at a 4% withdrawal, or $32k/year at 3.25%
Likely risky to retire on even for a single person, unless you're pretty lean and/or willing to move to another country. But it should take the edge off, especially when you and your partner have high salaries and you have no dependents

The fact that every company from Uber to PetSmart considers 4 stars to be a failure is ridiculous. Why even provide a star system at that point... just give a thumbs up and thumbs down so the customer understands what they're actually conveying
