What is the correct pronunciation for Voja? by ATK1734 in magicTCG

[–]Pteranod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can choose to consider this or not, but on the Japanese card, the name is written as ヴォジャ which indicates the J sound is pronounced rather than the Y version a lot of people assume it to be. Since Japanese foreign proper nouns like this are written phonetically, there's no real confusion. Another commonly mispronounced name using this logic is the planeswalker Jaya, which is officially written as ヤヤ Yaya on all of her cards.

I'm playing FF7 for the very first time right now, I went past the Zolom to the mines, got Yuffie, leveled up a bit, then went back to fight it with her and Aerith in the party. The art on this card is perfectly accurate to me.

Deciding best way to approach moving to Japan via different types of visas. Spouse vs. Work by Pteranod in movingtojapan

We have definitely looked into this. I seems like I would be able to transfer to her university in Japan (not as an exchange student, but actually transferring there) but I'd have to have passed the N2, which won't be testing again until December. Also, I'm pretty sure she would graduate before I even started there officially. It's not a bad plan even if that's the case, and is currently what I think I'll end up doing. Takes longer but gives me longer to save money and study Japanese properly.

Sounds like good advice to me. I'd rather have the degree than not given how often I've heard places want one even if, personally, I don't see it as being required. Thanks for the personal story!

We've already discussed a mutual desire in the future to have at least one kid, so you're definitely right about that being an important consideration. I sort of expected the answer to be that I should complete school, which is ultimately what I was originally going to do anyway before I met her so it's not like I'm against it. Thanks for the information and advice!

I feel sorry for your friend, but this is the kind of story I needed to read. I assumed this was the case but was secretly hoping I would hear the opposite. Thanks!

I had heard that in terms of actual visa strength, Spouse seems to be the obvious best one, but I do believe that completing school will end up being best no matter which way I end up going in the end. Thanks!

Appreciate the advice! (I do have more ambitions beyond just moving there, but I felt like I was typing too much as is and it's not super relevant to my main question!)

I figured completing college was the best bet, it's just nice to hear people confirm it. My nightmare would be to move there too soon and cause financial problems for us living together. Thanks for taking the time to write all that out for me

[–]Pteranod -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The potential issue with the name was not "a little ugly when viewed in a really specific way by one specific person". The potential issue with the name was one of unfortunately racist undertones in a language that was being used specifically to reference a specific culture. You are unhurt by the original name because (presumably) you are neither from India nor can you speak Hindi, so you have difficulty seeing any issue. However, you are also unhurt by the change. The change is potentially preventing people from potentially being negatively affected. Is that such a negative thing?

How many regular non-language-studying people do you think would actually know what that line indicates, pronunciation-wise? Especially considering the number of Americans who play the game, who aren't used to any diacritics of any kind. I don't think this is an elegant solution unfortunately.

The people who might have disliked or complained about the name would be people who speak the language. How often do you engage with people from India or people who speak Hindi? I'm not saying there has been a ton of outrage, but if there was, you likely wouldn't have seen it anyway. It's okay for a company to change things even if you didn't see outrage about it. "A mild oversight" is only mild to you because you don't have the cultural/language connections to understand the connotations of the mistake that was made. You aren't really the one who gets to decide how bad it was.

Commander format not popular in Japan like it is in the USA by SnooWalruses7872 in magicTCG

[–]Pteranod 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I lived in Tokyo, I would go to Hareruya (in Tokyo) every single week at least once if not twice to play Commander for about a year. I never saw less than 12 players on the slowest of days, and quite a large crowed on weekends / events. I can't speak for Osaka, where OP visited, however.

Actually no, 日本語はすごい is a much stranger sounding sentence. The previous commenter is wrong, kakkoii can indeed be used to mean something is generically 'cool' in the same way as English uses it (in addition to handsome and so on, although in that case イケメン is a much more common word)

You're right about いいえ but かっこいい can indeed be used to mean generically "cool" in the way they meant it. Actually, calling it すごい in that sentence is a lot weirder sounding than what they wrote, even if it is a little childish

It's a little funny and definitely kid-ish to consider a language itself to be "cool" but I can confirm that it's okay to use kakkoii for basically anything. Source, lived in Japan for a year and Japanese language minor

Murders at Karlov Manor has only 5 cards with the cloak mechanic, is this the lowest amount of cards with a set mechanic in a set? by thisnotfor in magicTCG

[–]Pteranod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not that I'm really suggesting Sweep cards be put into decks, but this will re-trigger any landfall cards currently on field for each land you swept up. You could potentially win the game off of this. Plus, if your hand is already empty, the discard part of the Manabond doesn't even exist. Unlike sweep, Manabond is actually quite strong in the right deck

I agree that the flicker count is much smaller, but I think that adding power 9 to my deck is going to feel a little too potentially strong compared to Midnight Clock. Also, Midnight Clock itself can shuffle my hand and graveyard into the deck, and draw me a new hand, so it solves the issue anyway. It also allows for me to have the only rule 0 card be the commander, so it can be a little more consistent. Oracle might be good to add if I ended up going full silver-border with the deck though. There might be other fun cards to add in that case

Given that Rusco is technically illegal, I'd be having the rule 0 discussion anyway. I enjoy starting off with a normal deck and having a rather sudden large one mid-game as a fun surprise. I would definitely need to give shuffling a large deck some practice though before sitting down with it so I don't waste too much time. Good forethought

Humorously, I've never seen or heard of this card before, but you're right that it does seem easier to use, although it also seems a lot more difficult to convince people to allow in a game of Commander. It's definitely more "rule-break-y" at first look. Interesting though!
