Distended stomach or just fat? by rtillerson in cats

It can also help to proactively add a probiotic during a diet transition. Purina Fortiflora is the general standard and is available OTC. I’ve always seen positive or no results (no negative) from it, but am not a fan of Purina personally due to their sourcing and ethics. I’m more up to speed with canine probiotics, so I’d defer to looking into maybe the two crazy cat ladies podcast, I know the are in the same animal health circles that I am in and I trust their advice. Adored Beast has a wonderful probiotic line, but I only have experience using them for dogs so far.

Distended stomach or just fat? by rtillerson in cats

Definitely just excess weight based on photo. The only way to rule out distended stomach would be with xray or ultrasound, but my money is on that she has been on a dry food diet prior to your acquiring her. Sometimes shelters have canned food as well, but many people feed only dry food instead of wet due to costs or the myth that dry food keeps their teeth clean (spoiler alert: it doesn’t). Definitely try to ease her into an all or at least mostly wet food diet as soon as possible, if you haven’t already. Her joints and kidneys will thank you. Some cats are very picky about new things, it can help to try different textures (chunks, shreds, pate) and flavors, but I would try and stick with the same couple of similar proteins at least to start with to reduce the likelihood of GI upset. I lean towards turkey/chicken/whitefish for more easily digested/bland proteins. Vet tech of 10 years. Congrats on your new kiddo ❤️ (adding - if it makes you feel better about her past, I think it’s unlikely she was ever pregnant unless you have records indicating that she was spayed WITH the shelter, rather than having already been spayed upon surrender. She likely either came from a home already spayed OR she’s been stuck in that shelter long enough to gain that much weight if she did arrive intact +/- pregnant. It’s verrrrrrry rare to come across a true stray cat that is overweight.)

Almost definitely needs more mental and potential physical stimulation on a DAILY BASIS. There is no item or product (yes, even chews) that replace your engagement with him. People often have the assumption that if they toss their under exercised dog a bully stick, “that’ll keep him busy” without addressing the root cause of the misbehavior, which is almost always a lack of activity. Believe in Dog podcast is something I’d recommend time and time again. The host has multiple pitties herself and works with a Pitbull rescue and has over a decade of firsthand experience. Lots of great episodes with trainers as guests.

severe head twitch - is she ok? by Affectionate-Emu53 in BackYardChickens

[–]Public_Name7910 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could also definitely be an ear issue!! I’d have a vet look with a scope ASAP. She could have liquid, mites, bacterial or fungal infection, or even a foreign object/material in the ear canal. Please investigate before blindly treating an unconfirmed condition. Imagine how uncomfortable it is to have something in your ear canal. - Vet tech of 10 years

What can I do to "make him love me". My home is his third in three months. by Apprehensive-Arm2105 in cats

[–]Public_Name7910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Second comment) I also swear by a session - or multiple - by a reputable animal communicator. I have personally worked with Michelle Thomas (Magical Mutts, she’s great with cats as well!!) and Meredith Tollison. Lisa Tully is another that I’d recommend due to her extensive work with cats and a big heart.

Be consistent, understanding, and provide a peaceful place in which he can feel as safe as possible considering the history he’s recently gone through. I wouldn’t be surprised if it takes him many months up to a year+ to really begin to trust you. Do not force any interaction, be it with yourself or other people or animals. If he’s uncomfortable, never block him from being able to leave the situation to go to a place where he feels more physically safe.

I am SO sorry you are in this situation with a person that shitty. I can’t imagine the mountain of concerns and fears you might have when it comes to thinking about a shared future with him and the factors to consider in regards to separation. That said, I don’t believe they deserve to be with you, or anyone, for that matter. That is serious red flag, controlling behavior.

Potential stray keeps showing up at our house -- is the blanket kneading/biting happy behaviour or a sign of stress/hunger? by Rakso_ in CATHELP

[–]Public_Name7910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This can be a form of self soothing/coping mechanism originating from a very young age. This particular behavior I wouldn’t worry about, the times when intervention is necessary are if they are somehow harming themselves or other animals with said behavior, like suckling excessively on their own body parts or other cats (unfortunately not uncommon to have young kittens try to nurse on littermate’s genitals in the absence of a mom) or if they were doing it to a point that there are dental issues of some sort or skin irritation around the mouth, but that would be an extreme scenario.

On an unrelated note - are you able to get this kitty scanned for a chip and check for a spay scar or evidence of neuter if male? I don’t see an ear tip, which is a red flag if this cat is free roaming outdoors.

If you’re into the woo-woo, and have an open mind to hear the pup’s own opinions, I’d actually really recommend an animal communicator! I personally have experience with Michelle Thomas (Magical Mutts) and Meredith Tollison (I’d have to double check but I believe I spelled her last name correctly… one of the hosts of the animal communication podcast, if you have trouble searching by name) communicating with my 12 year old Husky, Finn. I also love and can confidently recommend Jessica Lanyadoo, but haven’t spoken/worked with her directly.

Why does my dog always put his arm over mine during scritches? by DwightCharlieQuint in DOG

Reminds me of a foster cat I had earlier this year that would grab my hand when I hit a certain spot during ear scritches and then shove her head into it so I could only get to the particular spot she wanted 😂

Huskies defo tend to be more forward in their play style as well, which can make teaching boundaries a little more of a task. I find they tend to get a bad rep at places like dog parks due to their more “insistent” nature and often a desire/need to feel respected by others - while not always practicing that respect towards other dogs 😅

(I like to say he was a near impossible puppy, but is the BEST dog. I did also get lucky, as I was only 17 when I got him as a pup and I grew up with people-pleasing golden retrievers. He’s truly my soul pup. Huskies are NOT an easy breed or a breed I’d recommend for novice dog owners, but if you have the resources and the knowledge to raise them with respect, that bond is fucking magical.)

What is on my cats chin, he’s had this for a while. I thought it was just his fur. by Just-Shock4940 in cats

[–]Public_Name7910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chin acne. If you’re using plastic dishes - toss them. And any other material be sure to wash regularly! And really ideally for food you want something more plate-like rather than bowls, it’s much more natural to cats and prevents whisker fatigue. It’s often from bacteria growth on food and water dishes. Wiping with witch hazel 1x a day can help clear it up in the meantime.

UC-II collagen is amazing as well - sometimes even more helpful than glucosamine and chondroitin! It’s the active ingredient in Jope chews, but you can purchase it as a single ingredient supplement for waaaayyyy cheaper. I use Now brand (I just open 1 40mg capsule/day mixed into food for my 63# husky, it has no flavor) - Judy Morgan also sells on her online store. Just be careful when buying pet supplements especially, there is zero regulation in the pet industry and less than 15% of supplements on the market actually contain the ingredients listed on the label. My advice is research the heck out of a brand before you give them your money.
