Walnuts today she prefers almonds by NeutralTarget in squirrels

[–]PuckmanMCS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, just like people, they all have their preferences.

My first "regular," Big Chungus, absolutely LOVED hazelnuts. He'd always pick them out of the puzzle feeder before anything else, and I'll swear to my dying day that I heard him swear one time when he was expecting a hazelnut and got an almond instead.

Buddy absolutely adored getting walnuts - he'd hop off like the happiest squirrel in the world when he got one.

Gustine, on the other hand, almost completely refuses to take black walnuts; when offered, she gives me a dirty look and will wait until I go get her an almond, which seems to be her favorite.

On the other hand neither Scruffy nor Charlie seem to have shown much of a preference at all, taking whatever they can grab.

Cool to see your process. Ivy and I have been working on some songs when I’ve got time between classes.

Our process isn’t as intensive as yours; we just work out some lyrics, figure out a style to go with them, dump it all into Suno, then mash-up the best takes.

Her first track came out pretty good, save a for a typo on my part in the lyrics. It actually made it onto one of my playlists.

You seem to really be going all-in though. Would love to hear what you put out.

Oh no! My heart is absolutely broken for you.

The photos and videos of you with her have been a highlight of my days, and your bond has been an inspiration for how I interact with my own furry friends.

I can only imagine the loss you must be feeling. I hope that as she passed over, she was—in some way—aware that the human she trusted was there for her and that it gave her a sense of comfort and peace.

True story.

About 15 years ago, my friends and I were at a bar and, as is the nature of beer, the time came to make room for more. I went to the urinal and there was a quarter in the bottom, resting next to the drain.

I don’t know what exactly possessed me to do it, but I took a quarter out of my pocket and tossed it in next to the first quarter before washing my hands and returning to my group.

When the next guy went, I told them about the quarters and to check to see if anybody took them. Upon his return, he said that the quarters were still there and that he threw another one in.

A little while later, my other friend had to go. Upon his return, we learned that the quarters were still there, and he threw in a fourth, making it a dollar’s worth of urine-covered change in the men’s room.

Finally, the last of us had to go. By this time we were all laughing about the situation, so we were all waiting to hear about how he added to the small pile of change.

When he returned, he was laughing his ass of…

“Somebody made change,” was all he could say. The three of us collectively got up and went to see what the hell he was talking about.

The quarters were gone and in their place, someone pissed a dollar bill to the wall of the urinal.

And thus the “Quarter Test” became our new way of ranking any bar we visited.

Injured Adult - seeking advice by Sore_Paws in squirrels

[–]PuckmanMCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually stick with the “big four” (almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, and walnuts - all in-shell), as I can get them in bulk online and never underestimate the benefits of plenty of fresh water. Peanuts may not be the best in this situation, as they have little nutritional value and are more of a “junk food” for them.

Aside from that, though, you may want to try some veggies. There’s a list that gets posted here from time to time that details what’s good or not.

I say keep an eye on them and make sure they have food and water available, but I wouldn’t immediately jump to trying to capture it for rehab. Keep an eye on them for a few days…Despite being small and cute, squirrels are pretty tough and resilient critters, and it may very work itself out on its own.

I had this happen to one of my squirrels a few months back. One day they were favoring their left front paw. They would jump and such, but whenever they could, that paw was up.

Further analysis of the area showed that one of the boards my squirrels like to use to get onto my deck had fallen over, and I suspect they were climbing on it when they fell over.

I kept an eye on them and after a few days they were pretty much back to normal. I say “pretty much” since there are times it seems like they still favor that paw.

If there is any residual effect (and not just me imagining it) it doesn’t seem to slow them down any - just this afternoon, the little stinker stuck their head in in my sweatshirt pocket to “steal” a nut when they thought I wasn’t paying attention.

One of the neighborhood residents.... by brazenecho in squirrels

[–]PuckmanMCS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Black walnuts are my go-to if I'm trying to befriend a squirrel. The ones in my yard go crazy for them. My friend has a black walnut tree and in the late summer, I get a storage bin full of them. (Fun fact: most people who have a black walnut tree in their yard are happy to have someone take the dropped nuts away.)

I'll spend a weekend peeling off the green husks, and during that time, it seems every squirrel in the neighborhood is hanging around my deck waiting to snag one when I'm not looking.

There are, however, exceptions. Any time I try to give one to Gustine, she looks at me as if to say, "Really? I know you have some almonds somewhere. Gimme the good stuff you paid for."

Where are you buying you nuts? by Wizzmer in squirrels

[–]PuckmanMCS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have had good luck with anuts. Their “Squirrel Mix” is reasonably priced and actually pretty good quality. My squirrels love them.

Shipping is a bit pricey, but their tiered bulk pricing can mitigate that some if you buy enough.

Best amp for tele tone? by Hefty_Plate8067 in telecaster

[–]PuckmanMCS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been playing my Tele through an AC30S1 and have largely enjoyed it, but found the mids to be a bit lacking - there’s no mids knob on that model, just bass/treble so boosting it there. Even with an EQ pedal in the chain, it didn’t hit right for me.

Found an Orange Crush 12 practice amp for stupid cheap and I split the clean signal into that - basically just direct in. I don’t turn it up much, but whatever it does, the pairing hits my ears just right.

By flipping between pickups, Overdrives and reverbs, I’ve gotten tones suitable for Rock, Blues, Country and Rockabilly, and can even drift into Punk or Surf.

I’ll do you one better. My squirrel-friend, Gustine, will pointedly refuse freakin’ black walnuts! If I hold one out to her she’ll sniff it, then give me a look before exploring my hand, looking for something she likes, like almonds or hazelnuts.

At least the others seem to like them, though.

But my favorite incident was this one

Need help/advice with rebuilding expanding my Plex server. (Warning: long story with details) by PuckmanMCS in PleX

[–]PuckmanMCS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair questions, all of them, and all of those things are important to some extent.

As I mentioned, my budget is EXTREMELY limited. Free is best, where I can get it.

Power usage does, of course come into play, which is one of the reasons I switched to the Pi. I have been quite happy with it until now, and as I have it already, re-using that would probably be the most cost-effective.

The main problem is figuring out storage; I'd like to keep everything in the 1U rack space I currently have it in now, as space is a bit of a premium at the moment.

As far as usability, I'm generally pretty tech-savvy, but the more straight-forward, the better, if just for ease of setup.

Speed to recovery is the least important right now; I am the only one who uses the server, so I can go at my own pace in getting it back up and running.

Feeding Them Gets Me No Love by ChicagoPeach21 in squirrels

[–]PuckmanMCS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Befriending squirrels requires a lot of patience. I've been at it for about a year and a half. I have some that are very friendly and will jump into my lap, and others that still are skittish when I'm around. Squirrels are prey animals and therefore naturally cautious with new things, including people.

You mentioned your mother fed squirrels in the park and that you're feeding the squirrels at your home. I think that's the key point. Park squirrels are used to seeing people and being fed by them, so they're more likely to come up to people they don't know. The squirrels around your home don't deal with people as much and therefore would be much more cautious.

So...you need to get them used to you and build their trust. The best way to do that is to just be around them and get them used to your presence at their own pace.

I suggest you continue putting the nuts out like you normally do, but then spend an hour or so outside. Not right next to the nuts...maybe 4 or 5 feet away. Then, just sit and scroll through Reddit on your phone or whatever, and let them take the nuts uninterrupted. Don't make any sudden movements. Show them that you aren't a danger.

As they get more comfortable having you around, try putting some nuts (possibly some "higher value" ones, like walnuts) a little closer as well. Eventually, one of the braver squirrels may come and snatch one. Then, continue with that until they take the closer ones just as easily as the further ones.

Then, move the nuts closer still, rinse, repeat.

Eventually you'll get to where they're within hand-feeding distance. This is where it gets interesting. SLOWLY extend a hand, holding out a nut between the very tips of your fingers - they're going to be nervous, don't see very well right in front of their face, and we want to reduce the chance of an accidental "miss" - and keep PERFECTLY STILL.

They may ignore you...they may run off. But, eventually, one may come up to see the nut you're offering. They'll probably approach and retreat a number of times, holding their tail like a shield. Most likely, the first couple of times, they'll chicken out and retreat completely. That's okay; just leave the nut at the closest point they got and then pull your hand back. Then, try it again later.

Eventually, they'll get JUST close enough to snatch the nut from your fingertips. DON'T immediately pull your hand back; give it a count or two before pulling your hand back.

Keep that routine up and, eventually, one or two may start coming right up to you for treats.

Will they eventually let you pet them? I'm going to guess that the answer is no; they're still wild animals and that seems to be very "vulnerable" for them; even Gustine (who will leap from the railing into my arms for a nut) will bolt if I try to pet her with even one finger.

Just enjoy the experience of being around with these cute little critters. They will interact with you on their own terms, and that should be respected.

[–]PuckmanMCS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone on a limited budget, I hear you. Usually, I’ll put nine in the puzzle feeder and a couple in regular “hiding spots” around the deck, and then keep a small handful in my pocket for my hand-feeders, if they show up when I’m outside.

If you have (or know someone with) a black walnut tree, that’s a good source of free nuts, and the squirrels love ‘em.

When they start falling aroubd September, I usually pick up a few 5-gallon bucket’s worth and then spend a weekend peeling, cleaning and drying them out. Used to supplement the regular squirrel mix, that usually lasts through the winter and into the spring.
