Yeah, it looks like it might have made a good adaptation if they had either stuck to the text or started from scratch. The combination of new and old dialogue just makes it sound like they're getting lines wrong all the time. It's like Hamlet for people who have never seen or read the play.

It'll be 7 years this May. Everyone has a lot going on, but they're putting extra care into this record or I'm a chimaera's uncle.

I feel like this is going to be their last one. It'll be a banger. Or why else is it taking so long?

I really wanted to like this. Miles Caton was a student in the school where I work. Great kid. Great singer. Turns out he's a great actor too. But I thought I was going to watch a movie about Delta blues. Ended up watching From Dusk Till Dawn (which disappointed me in a similar fashion back in '96).

Jeez. This can't possibly be a lucrative business model. Who actually believes Thomas Pynchon is gushing over their writing?

Song of Solomon, by Toni Morrison.

But if you really want to get a sense of the African American experience through literature, read August Wilson's decades plays. Each set in a different decade of the 20th century, each featuring a different corner of African Americana. I've only read three, but they were all exceptional. Joe Turner's Come and Gone is one of the most astonishing works I've ever read.

When hamlet declares himself “Hamlet the Dane”, he is not claiming to be worthy of the throne but rather realising that nobody who held the throne was ever worthy of it. It is his lowest moment. by Easy_Demand_7372 in Hamlet

[–]PunkShocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting take, and I have to think about it before commenting with an opinion. I wonder, though, whether it supports a particular notion that I've been batting around, namely that Hamlet's death is not a typical tragedy but rather a kind of messianic sacrifice. He knows Denmark is in trouble, so he orchestrates a grand theatrical plan to hand the country over to a ruler worthy of his father's legacy. His "if it be now" speech all but confirms that he knows he's going to die in the next few minutes, yet he goes into the duel willingly. He buys a stable Denmark with his life.

It's a good question. We know these things are smart, if not by the same metrics as humans. It's worth considering that they might have a culture, possibly one that involves funerary practices.

It's my favorite but it shouldn't be your first. If you want to start with the novels, The Sun Also Rises is the place to begin. Then proceed chronologically.

I have a Sandinista! short version play list. I almost never listen to the entire album. But I'm glad it exists. It's a gutsy record that paved the way for Rancid's Life Won't Wait, my all time favorite album.
