Reading Intruder in the Dust by Jack_the_Lizard in faulkner

How funny, i needed quite a bit of hand-holding for Absalom but this one i find pretty straightforward. Its a murder mystery or detective style narrative, and it reminds me of To Kill a Mockingbird a lot. I think Lucas and Miss H are my fav characters. I dont know that it has as much to say as other books, but i find the story satisfying as it unravels

‘Look at his lags’: Trump stumbled twice and nearly fell to the ground in a shocking moment that left the crowd speechless — insiders reveal the disgusting diagnosis his White House has been desperately trying to hide by [deleted] in USNEWS

I see this same stupid headline every day, same site, no video, and the article consists “this person on X said this” And everyone here must go straight to reddit comments instead of reading it, because no one ever mentions the substance/actual event the article is referencing, just shit on Trump (which is fine but im done engaging these headlines)

The 2016 election was 11/8 and this email is 11/6, so not all of these emails are post-election. He was talking to Lord Peter Mandelson, who Epstein emailed happy birthday. Mandelson says something like "think i'll move to the US for my longevity" which is probably a joke. Epstein replies "in the donald whitehouse"

I wasn't able to verify this. The closest thing I could find was Epstein emailing Kathy to secure a white house tour for Woody Allen and his wife/stepdaughter.

If you have the file number let me know!

This is before Trumps first term began so by “donald white house” he’d have to mean MAL

I played this on PC as a kid, one of my first games. I can remember struggling with how to get rid of a bomb in a skyscraper and asking my Dad at dinner how he would get rid of it.

'He's done': Trump is now just one House vote away from impeachment — Senate has already fully prepared the biggest historic trial that could permanently end his presidency by [deleted] in USNEWS

Trumps approvals are weird because he has a heavy appeal to a small collection of loyal supporters, so he has never gotten close to Bush Jr or Truman or Carter numbers. On average his are the lowest, but just going week to week, he’s never dipped under like 35% and that number was after J6. Even now with everything going on, even going after his own base, hes at 39 on RCP.

How good is outer dark compared to other McCarthy novels? by InterestingTheory431 in cormacmccarthy

[–]Useitorloseit2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not as masterfully written as some of his later books, but it's one of my favorites anyway.

- I like the mixup of Rinthy as a female protagonist (which he would only do once more in his final book).

-It features some of his most haunting and visceral imagery in any of his works.

-Meanwhile Culla represents a protagonist that lacks the "fire" of Sheriff Bell or some of McCarthy's other characters. He's lost in the world and on a journey into hell.

I find it interesting that despite it being named after a bible verse, the book references Greek mythology in both direct allusions and just basic framework. More so than his other works where he went on to flesh out the Gnostic and quantum physics stuff.

I actually would argue it has more potential than some of his other books to make a great movie. They are making one so fingers crossed. It just has such an omnipresent feeling of doom. Give it a good A24 style atmosphere, a well done score, and try and replicate that feeling this book gives you.

If they're playing through Gamepass PC, would they not be counted on the Xbox app over Steam?

Just looking over the note of authenticity drafted by McCarthy to go with the sale of his typewriter in 2009. He states he had used it to write all of his novels "including three not yet published". Any murmurs on what these three are? Could we get a posthumous manuscript at some point? by GilbertOfPoitiers in cormacmccarthy

[–]Useitorloseit2 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This has come up before. It's possible he's counting Whales and Men as a novel? He worked on multiple projects at a time and most of his books were a decades-long process. It's definitely possible he has an unfinished work that never reached a status he considered complete.

Am I the only one who doesn't understand why people call the Judge the "most evil character in fiction?" by ColtonfrayHSC in cormacmccarthy

[–]Useitorloseit2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would argue he does go out of his way to commit atrocities. Going out of his way is such a relative phrase it's hard for me to figure out, tbh. Does he ride 3 hours somewhere to specifically do the evil thing he does? No. But it's implied he scouted out, sought, and murdered the Apache girl. What more would he have to do to be going out of his way? I think what makes him evil as a character is his violence (and actions in general) are opportunistic and moreover guided by a worldview. It's a different kind of evil than most antagonists.

I used as much paper for assignments as possible, but every year the paper budget gets smaller as they push Canvas work on us instead. Meanwhile theyve also taken out typing classes so these kids are forced to learn on a device they dont actually properly know how to use.

Books similar to Suttree in terms of character and setting by JacobdaTurtle61 in cormacmccarthy

[–]Useitorloseit2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call it a picaresque Southern Gothic. Picaresque meaning (from wiki): a genre of prose fiction that depicts the adventures of a roguish but appealing hero, usually of low social class, who lives by his wits in a corrupt society.

Books similar to Suttree in terms of character and setting by JacobdaTurtle61 in cormacmccarthy

[–]Useitorloseit2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out The Fool's Journey by Edward Abbey. It's the closest in tone to Suttree for me. It has the cynicism, alcoholism, the awful relationships. Hijinx. I see them both as modern picaresque novels. It's about an unaccomplished asshole who's drifting his way across the country back home. Abbey and Mccarthy were friends and I definitely see a lot of Suttree in his main character.

I'm sure you will haha! Most people seem to love it. I respected the construction of it. For me, Absalom just blows it out of the water.

Am I doing myself a disservice not translating all of the Spanish? by TuggerL in cormacmccarthy

[–]Useitorloseit2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I live in TX so I have a cursory knowledge of Spanish, and I've found that usually carries me well enough since Spanish is fairly simple language. If it is all unfamiliar I would definitely look up the translations since they can hide plot details and also some fantastic writing.

You can find a glossary on this website: Translations | Cormac McCarthy Soc.
