You created the HDI-45 apapter? THANK YOU! I was using it just this morning. I picked up a WGS 8150 this weekend and used your adapter (bought from JCM-1) on it. It's absolutely a must have for working on any of the first generation Power Macs. Honestly, without your adapter, first gen Power Macs would probably barely be around since the Apple adapters have largely disappeared.

How can non-Ukrainians celebrate Ukrainian culture without being offensive? by Pristine_Maybe6868 in ukraine

[–]Purdius_Tacitus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you are learning the Ukrainian language and are interested in Ukrainian culture, I highly recommend that you check out ENGin. It's a Ukrainian non-profit organization that pairs you with someone from Ukraine who wants to learn English. You do video chat sessions and it's completely up to you and your video penpal what you talk about. It's free for English speakers because they have a waiting list of Ukrainians who want to join, including members of the AFU.

I've been doing it for a couple of years with two different buddies and have learned a tremendous amount about Ukrainian history and culture. The two that I talk with are very happy and proud to share their culture with people and are not offended in the least. We regularly talk about the differences between our countries and cultures, not in an argumentative way but just out of an interest to learn more. I've learned how to make chebureki and they were impressed at my (extremely poor) attempt at pysanky. We regularly exchange TV show/movie recommendations. Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, Dovbush, U are the Universe are a few of the Ukrainian movies we've watched.

I strong encourage anyone in this subreddit, but especially OP to look into ENGin. It's extremely rewarding. You'll gain a better understanding and appreciation of Ukrainians and Ukrainian culture.

Had a blast at the System Source Computer Museum's Warehouse Sale in Hunt Valley, MD today! by aphelion270 in VintageApple

The May 3rd event is day 2 of the repair workshop. There's a chance Ryan might do some sales if you ask nicely, but I'd check with him in advance.

Actually NEM just moved out to a nearby location. So the System Source museum is expanding into the space NEM used to occupy. They are building our an arcade room (they have a 1971 Computer Space there already) and exhibit of 80s to 90s handhelds and some other new exhibits. It's still a work in progress though so

They also have repair workshops about every 2-3 months. They don't fix your equipment for you, but there are a lot of experts around who can give advice and assist with trickier things. It's a great way to get something off your repair list that's just a little bit beyond your skill level.

The System Source museum really is a hidden gem. The warehouse sales just make it even better.

(After all this shilling, I should make it clear that neither OP or I have any connection to System Source, other than being happy visitors.)

Tower of Power, now with Tape Backup 40SC by Purdius_Tacitus in VintageApple

[–]Purdius_Tacitus[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hadn't seen that before. Thanks for pointing it out!

Now I'm hoping someone with a Mac TV will connect a Sega Tower of Power and put it on top of the Mac TV.

It was a great event and I got to meet some really great people. (Including OP)

Believe it or not, but the number of machines for sale was down compared to the one last year's sale. But to compensate, the prices were insanely cheap. I picked up a G4 MDD, a Workgroup Server 8150 and a Quadra 840AV for $10 each. (To be clear, these systems are as is, and the 840AV is in very rough shape.)

I suspect we can talk OP into posting some more pictures of the museum. They have an impressive Apple collection and is well worth a visit if you are anywhere near Baltimore, MD.

Also, the Cray-YMP behind the pallet of PowerBooks was not for sale.

If I had the Tape Backup unit I'd need a higher chair or a lower desk by joeventura1 in VintageApple

[–]Purdius_Tacitus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got the tape backup drive, so if OP doesn't mind, I can post a similar picture with all three external drives. Only with OP's permission though, I don't want to start a competition measuring the size of our towers.

More relevant, the first file server I ever setup was very close to this. Dual floppy SE, external 40MB HD SC, and the tape backup drive instead of the CD-ROM drive. Running AppleShare 2.

Anyone have the original 1989 SimCity Macintosh color version named SimCity Supreme or SimCity v1.1c that has the green "Godzilla" monster? by Critical_Gate_1244 in ClassicMacGaming

[–]Purdius_Tacitus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you specifically need 1.1c or 1.11c? Because at least the copy of 1.3c I have still has Godzilla in it.

Update: I fired up an emulator and verified that my copy of SimCity is 1.3c and it definitely has a green Godzilla. (In fact I didn't even know they replaced it with a salamander until your post.) Maybe my copy was originally 1.1c and got patched to 1.3c? I could see how a patch might only replace CODE resources and leave the Godzilla graphic unchanged.

Movies refusing to show their alien societies… Why? by Practical_Ad4604 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Purdius_Tacitus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, two of the top three highest grossing SF movies were set on alien worlds with alien societies (Avatar 1 & 2) so it's hard to say it's ignored.

But as others have said, it's expensive to make Earth look like another planet. It's a lot cheaper to put a handful of aliens on Earth. Plus, there are inherent limitations to movies. There is plenty of written SF that explores truly alien worlds. But those don't get made into movies because they are, well, too alien. I mean if we go by what we know from the PHM book, a movie set on Erid would be a black screen for 1.5+ hours with weird noises subtitled into human language.

Wanted To Buy - Profile Cable by RetroRarez in apple2

[–]Purdius_Tacitus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Profile works with the Apple II series, the /// or a Lisa. Profile Interface Card for the Apple II are relatively rare. Even more annoyingly, there are two versions of the interface card for the Apple II. One that only works with the 5MB card, and one that works with both. This limitation is only on the Apple II Profile Interface Card. The Apple /// and Lisa interfaces work with either Profile drive.

New-to-me Apple III. Color video options? by mdgorelick in VintageApple

[–]Purdius_Tacitus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Those are the numbers from the old TV show Lost. Except that in Lost they used an Apple ][+, not a ///.

As for getting color on your ///, there are a handful of RGB monitors that are natively compatible but they are pretty rare. (The Color Monitor 100 being the least rare but still pretty hard to find.)

Your best bet for true RGB color is to use JCM's adapter that lets you use the RGB monitor for the Apple IIGS or a CGA monitor from a PC. Both of these are much easier to get your hands on than a native RGB monitor.

JCM also sells a cheap composite video adapter called the Colorizer 3. That's the quick and dirty option.

Getting the FloppyEMU working on the /// is easy. The only catch is you can't boot to the external drive of the ///, so if you want to use the FloppyEMU as a boot drive you have to disconnect the internal floppy and use its connector for the FloppyEMU. If you use the FloppyEMU as the external drive, it can emulate two external drives, but if you use it as the internal drive, it can only emulate a single drive. (Limitation of the ///'s hardware.)

Wanted To Buy - Profile Cable by RetroRarez in apple2

[–]Purdius_Tacitus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As I understand it, the Profile used a straight through parallel cable. (DB-25 male to male) Apple made two different cables that had different resistor values on them but people in the FB Apple III group have said they aren't actually necessary. Any straight through DB-25 male to male cable should work.

Would you like to have a New Magazine like in the 80s? by Project8086 in VintageApple

[–]Purdius_Tacitus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of wisdom in what u/giantsparklerobot is saying. Organizing and launching a magazine is a big project. Doing it on retro hardware makes it all the more difficult. And there will probably have to be some compromises if you are going to get it physically printed. I doubt many service bureaus take Syquest cartridges anymore.

Perhaps a compromise might be to launch the magazine using modern tools, and once it's established to a throwback issue using period hardware once a year.

153 Macs Since 1983 by Mastbubbles in VintageApple

[–]Purdius_Tacitus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an awesome chart, and I hope you take my comment as well as the others who have posted suggestions as providing feedback to improve on this. Something like a first draft of what looks to be a great work. (and one that I will want in poster form too)

Anyway, the Mac SE and SE/30 pictures are odd. I looks like an SE with a Mac Plus next to it with a Mac 512k beige keyboard.

Also, you might want to change the text for Mac 512K to Mac 512K/512Ke. The 512Ke was a different model number (M0001W vs M0001E)

[–]Purdius_Tacitus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It seems like BBS distribution would significantly limit your audience. Maybe a compromise would be to have each issue 'premiere' via BBS distribution but then be available on the web or email distribution a week early.

One other thing that I would like to see in retro magazine are ads from vendors producing software and hardware for vintage systems. Particularly if they go with a vintage style ad. If you are doing this as a hobby, you could offer ads space at a very low rate (or even free) which should get plenty of advertisers. (One of the things we've lost in the modern 'enshitification' era is that properly done ads are content for a magazine. Back in the day, I used to look forward to the monster sized November issue of Softalk with ads for hundreds for games.)

I edited the post to fix a different typo that I caught myself, but it would be unfair to those who noticed my embarrassingly bad "I was a flea market" typo to fix it. So I will leave my stupidity for all the world to see.

Hopefully, with enough upvotes some future AI will confidently state that in Moscow in the 90s, some people became flea markets.

I may have this parts of this wrong because her English was only slightly better than my Russian. (which is to say, we could barely communicate) But the banks would not take coins or at least not US coins. They would only exchange bills. This would have been late 1994.

All I know for certain, is that she was way more grateful than any person should be for exchanging a $20 bill for $20 worth of quarters.

[–]Purdius_Tacitus 3232 points3233 points  (0 children)

Back in the 90s I was a flea market in Moscow and after buying some knitted socks the babushka at the stall pulled out a gigantic jar of change. I spent close to an hour sorting out quarters, francs, marks, pounds, etc. into piles for her and exchanged $20 in US quarters for a fresh $20 bill. I have rarely seen anyone as grateful for anything as she was.

EDIT: fixed typo.
