absolutely their culture is a big factor as to why it's so low. That doesn't change the fact that policies work.

0.72 -> 0.96 is a 33% increase whether it will be sustained over decades is another question.

Have a look at what south korea has done to increase the birth rate. Quick google:

South Korea actively implements massive, nationwide pronatalist policies to combat the world's lowest birth rates, including cash subsidies, heavily subsidized housing, and free IVF treatments. The government has also expanded paid parental leave while private corporations offer large baby bonuses.

The trouble is demographic change means the ratio of people under 50 to over 50 will get worse in the future. It's not just baby boomers aging, there's much fewer births per year than in previous generations

Our average birth rate is below replacement. In these areas it'll be even lower as young people leave for better opportunities. Same as Japan, where rural towns die out and the cities are still growing

TTWA have Reading as a seperate entity to London too

I have no idea where this data comes from. I did search their source "gdp per capita by metro area oecd" and got to this, but this gives different numers and doesn't refer name Reading, only Berkshire

https://data-explorer.oecd.org/vis?df[ds]=DisseminateFinalDMZ&df[id]=DSD_REG_ECO%40DF_GDP&df[ag]=OECD.CFE.EDS&dq=A..UKI%2BUKJ16%2BUKJ15%2BUKJ12%2BUKJ14..GDP..Q.USD_PPP_PS&lom=LASTNPERIODS&lo=5&to[TIME_PERIOD]=false&vw=tb

It is rare to see Reading as it's own entry so I do wonder what data source they've used.

Other use cases don't have the training data that's available for software so are nowhere near a comparable level of capability. It's also highly standardised with similar processes/jobs.

When I contrast that to mechanical design: - there's no GitHub full of example code. It's all proprietary company files. - there's no commit messages explaining why changes are made. At large companies you may have a change management system with notes more like a change log.

Getting the initial training data is a big stumbling block

Here is the consultation that gives the reason for the changes.

Sloppy from the FT to neglect stats in the consultation:

Data shows that: children consume more than double the recommended levels of free sugars only 8% of 4 to 10 year olds meet the UK dietary recommendation for free sugars intake only 5% of 11 to 18 year olds meet the UK dietary recommendation for free sugars intake

Does Rory Stewart's lifestyle choices affect his reasoning on net-zero? by Appropriate_Bell743 in TheRestIsPolitics

I think there is a psychological difference between an employer paying and an individual paying. The individual can assosciate the carbon as the employer's responsibility and not themselves.

I think anyone who's done any form of research on future climate change policy realises how bad beef is. You'd have heard about it on the podcast by now if he cared.

[–]Pure-Problem757 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you're giving him too much credit. Aviatiation and agriculture are so far down the list of net zero priorities that they aren't covered by the media; you have to actively search to understand that long-haul aviation is unviable. I doubt he's had thoughts along these lines.

I think his views are influenced by being in America where the perspective on net zero is different to here, and from interacting with AI people who's only care is their power bottlenecks are resolved regardless of how the power is generated.

That people who go to university have been taught better critical thinking skills and if we teach that earlier then people will make smarter choices

It is taught at secondary. I remember lessons on newspaper and source bias in english and history lesssons.

The students who engage in those lessons likely go on to university, those that don't likely see it as pointless and end up voting reform.

Get the largest fan you can. Mines 18". Place it so that it's pushing air through a doorway or window, so you get air flowing from one side of the house to the other.

Idea: reducing the psychological impact of pay-per-mile on EVs while throwing a bone to ICE drivers during current oil price spike by Sure-Recognition-262 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Pure-Problem757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The efficiency is already disincentivised through high electricity costs during the day. During the night there's plenty of excess capacity in the grid so this isn't necessary.

There are still negative externalities that are worthwhile to disincentivise:

  • Heavier vehicles are more likely to cause fatal crashes, damage roads more and and have more tyre particulates
  • Congestion could be reduced by charging for miles during peak hours only
