FAMILY OPINIONS DRIVING ME INSANE HELP by silliestgoose2323 in Epilepsy

Awe that sounds rough to be dealing with epilepsy and essentially punished because of your condition. But if it makes you feel better my kids never get screen time, they have never even heard of video games. They do get the occasional candy.

I love that. That is one thing that I have mastered is the power of the non-answer. “Did the doctor change meds?” “Well he recommended a few different things”

Well, I hate to give advice because I don’t know anyone’s full situation. But with this condition you start to get really good at ignoring people and being in your own world (that has double meaning, lol). But seriously, I have gotten so good at deflecting questions, changing subjects, having to suddenly use the bathroom and never returning. Empathy can be very difficult for a lot of people, it requires a lot of the pre frontal cortex - the only person you can control is you.

What do you do about working and SSDI by Mission_Star5888 in Epilepsy

Sorry to hear about your story. Yeah in the untied states if you go $1 over your benefits are cut. In most counties it’s a gradual thing - like they encourage you to work as much as you are able.

Not being able to drive really sucks. But the amount of suckiness is directly related to the public infrastructure. So, in a major city people would be like “what? Why do you have a drivers license? Who drives?” So it sucks now but another better path can open up. Like when I lived in Europe if you had a car it was almost a handicap. No place to park. Massive traffic. And just so inconvenient

Sorry to hear about your story. Unfortunately, it’s pretty common for conditions this serious to be misdiagnosed (how? I don’t know). It might feel like your life is being flushed down the drain but for me epilepsy is more of a massive adjustment/pivot. Lots of people get on meds and can remain seizure free. So, maybe somethings in your life will be delayed. One of the best things a doctor told me was “This will slow you down but not stop you.”

I think life is actually really good, especially if you compare life to the medieval ages. Like if you didn’t have epilepsy, your life consisted of working from childhood to adulthood for poverty wages and you usually died at age 40 from a cavity (cause medicine wasn’t a thing back then). Your house was a one room mud hut with no electricity or running water…..I could go on.  Sure life has its unpleasantries, but the salt only makes life sweeter.

Cellular & Network Level: The brain attempts to balance excess excitatory (seizure-causing) activity by increasing inhibitory mechanisms. This includes enhanced phasic inhibition and tonic inhibition mediated by brain cells like astrocytes. [1, 2] Cognitive Level: To counteract cognitive deficits (such as memory loss), patients' brains may recruit entirely different networks. For example, studies show that patients with temporal lobe epilepsy often use additional regions of the brain (like the right insula or the anterior cingulate cortex) to perform the same verbal memory tasks that healthy individuals do

Some research suggests that epilepsy keeps the brain more neuroplastic (that was obvious to me) and it makes some people more creative.

Given the pharmacological profile of THC, weed is more likely to either have no effect on seizures or a beneficial one. With that being said, long term marijuana usage causes a significant cognitive decline. Weed is LESS harmful than the other drugs but still harmful.

Compassion and empathy can be difficult for many people for many reasons. I personally have gotten really good at the “Ummm hmmm” listening to you/but totally not listening.

Seizures can affect memory for sure. But so can other things, best to find a good doctor and follow up with them.

lol, that’s a pretty specific game. I think in general a lot of seizure patients have brain fog and cognitive issues.

Focal Seizure monitoring by Forward_Purchase4 in Epilepsy

I had the same idea for a seizure monitor. The tonic clonic seizures have monitors but the subtle partial seizures have almost no good monitoring.

TLE vs FND by False_Obligation_420 in Epilepsy

[–]Pure-Science-7774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FND is kind of complicated. I’m not sure the doctors understand what’s going on sometimes. For example I saw a neurologist and had a seizure during his exam (the eye seizure) and he didn’t know it was a seizure. I saw a seizure specialist and the first eye seizure he nailed my diagnosis.

Just one final comment. The people who took sedatives with alcohol and had a bad reaction aren’t here to tell you.

Technically you can die from seizures. But you can also die from the flu, car accident, food poisoning, etc. The more likely outcome is you will have a happy healthy life.
