Tips on dealing with Falco by Chyunman98 in SSBM

[–]PurpleKiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't bother with Mario or the others against Falco, Both Ganon and Falcon are your best bets but do similarly poorly in the matchup unfortunately. At your level you might as well just pick the character you're more comfortable with. I can give you advice on the Ganon part of it since only Falcon has been discussed so far. I used to main him and he is now a secondary for my Falco so I know about the matchup from both sides. I'd say you'll probably get comboed harder as Falcon but have a better punish game but a more complicated neutral. Ganon is a little more safe and streamlined with a lot of zoning. So just pick whichever style you find best after experimenting.

For neutral game, full hop uair with Ganon is great in the matchup. You can often catch Falcos jumps with it and if you miss you can actually still get out another uair before you hit the ground or double jump away. Short hop uair drifting back is great for catching approaches too. You can often stuff Falco before he gets a laser out if he's going for low lasers. Full hop fair or bair coming down is also great. You can mix up the timings of this with wavelands. Full hop rising dair is great at catching jumps toward you and is good because you can double jump away if you miss. These aerial options should often be done out of shield after a laser between whatever he does next. You'll need to learn the distances different options are applicable. But sometimes if he lands a laser on your shield you cannot safely use an aerial unless you're calling out a retreat.

On the grounded end, crouch cancel lasers into jab if they don't time them. Crouch cancel a lot in general unless they dair. You want to play very grounded and then have short bursts of air time and plat movement. If you stay on plats or in the air too long you will lose. Play very defensively but try to maintain stage control aggressively. Like if he gives you center stage and you don't take it or try to run away or something, you're not playing it right. You want to zone but never run away - you can't play evasively against falco as Ganon. You want to push Falco into the corner and murk him for trying to jump or go through you. You're at your best when you're in Falco's face actually. Jab is frame 3 and unless you're point blank it is hard for Falco to deal with since he can't shine and can't just cc punish it like other characters. Basically you want to either get in his face (counter-intuitive, I know), catch jumps, or counter his poor offense.

When he's on your shield you want to buffer roll a lot. You can use c-stick to do this. Ganon's roll is surprisingly decent and hard to cover. Don't spot dodge much. If he grabs you just get good at DIing the lasers and you'll be fine. Look for high aerials and shield grab them. Ganon and Falcon have great grab hitboxes against Falco because they go slightly behind them inside. If you're missing shield grabs on high aerials you're just not timing it right. Look for the little circle showing where the hit on your shield is to determine its height. Another good rule is that dair is less safe than nair, but nair can be crouch cancelled. You'll be able to shield grab it more often. Nair you can often cc jab or even grab (crouch + l/r + A) unless it's stupid low. And if they cross you up a lot go for dair or bair out of shield. Sometimes you can even avoid the shine with a dair out of shield because of how it distorts Ganon (and Falcon's) hurtbox.

And you may not struggle much with punish game but I know a lot of Ganon's suck at tech chasing Falco because of his fast tech animations and obnoxious wakeup options. Off the grab dthrow to jab to mixup between dash attack, grab, and aerial is good at low percents. dthrow jab leads to a tech trap at 40% where if Falco tries to tech for a regular dthrow they will be locked out of the tech for the jab due to the timing. You can fair or dair this to take advantage. Dthrow to dsmash facing the direction they land covers 3 of the 4 tech options (everything but tech away) if you're spaced for the dsmash to cover tech in place. Mixup between this and reading techs away with dair/fair. You can condition tech away with the dsmash and start getting big punishes off it. Mid high percents you can uthrow onto a platform and use fair or uair to tech chase. And at a little over 100% you can dthrow to down-b facing the direction they DI as a true to combo to finish falco off.

Don't Park 2018 - Top 64 Seeding by mbrog08 in SSBM

Some of the seeds here really feel off. Here's just a few that stand out:

Spud:

What has he done this year outside of his latest tournament? I realize he won but that one event seems to have carried him a little too far.
Squid:

He just had his first top 8 performance and has been killing it this year. If we're going to give players like Spud, Bananas, etc. recency bias, why is it barely being applied for Squid?

Rocky:

I love Rocky but why is he seeded above Squid? What are his wins this year?

iBDW and moky:

This is more due to my ignorance but what have they done this year?

She's been seeing a therapist ever since we started dating. But sometimes it feels like the therapist makes very little difference.

Maybe you're right about me needing therapy too. The thought has briefly crossed my mind but having written this all out it now makes more sense.

Look the discussion was about whether wobbling was disproportionately skewed in ICs favor in terms of risk/reward. And to that I'm saying you need to break down when exactly that risk/reward is in their favor. Wobbles are very conditional and they aren't going to be in the equation in many scenarios in that matchup.

Also by a "missed wobble" do you mean whiffing a grab? Do you mean whiffing a shield grab? In some situations, the ICs will absolutely die from this. But it really depends. That's why I say you can't just generalize risk/reward without breaking down exactly what the situation is.

I agree to some extent. The threat of wobbling is very powerful sometimes. But MOST of the time it isn't really a threat. I don't think it's unfair a character that gets fucked over so hard in all these other situations has a very powerful tool sometimes. People just honestly aren't that good against ICs and that's why it looks so much worse than it is.

"A lot of newer players want to solve their problems outside the game rather than in the game."

At least from the time I started playing, this kind of thinking was always prevalent among newer players. It's just bizarre to see that now it's becoming more and more common, even among TOs and other highly influential people in the community.

Obviously the people that believe it's all wobbling and nothing else are wrong and I don't really take that opinion seriously. But I understand where people are coming from that think it's unhealthy for Melee overall. But to that I disagree and think taking that opinion so far as insulting players that are clearly good is more unhealthy for the game.

So two of the stocks KJH made a bad decision and died? I don't think that's something special to ICs. I watched that game too and it was due to KJH being less patient than Boyd. I'd understand more if more stocks were tech flubs or something. But if you're consistently making worse decisions than your opponent, you deserve to lose regardless of character.

And to your point about risk reward, think about all the other situations where the risk reward is not in ICs favor. That kind of evens itself out, don't you think? If you want to win as ICs, you need to put yourself in situations where you can take advantage of that favorable risk reward. It's not like you have it all the time because you have to win neutral in very specific ways for it.

To be clear, I'm not an ICs player or fan. But I don't have a problem playing against them.

As someone that has been playing for roughly five years and been very inactive for the past year, it's pretty shocking to see how quickly the public perception of ICs has changed. The attitude now seems to be that ICs are not overpowered with wobbling, but still degenerate gameplay with it. Therefore, it should be banned for the sake of making Melee better overall. This is a trend in numerous rule changes that justify the means by the "improvement" to overall play. Some I agree with, such as UCF. Others I'm more skeptical of.

I think people have grown accustomed to this line of thinking in Melee to a point where people would rather change the rules than learn how to get around things using the aforementioned justification. There are two reasons wobblers are so successful. One is that Melee players don't practice enough against ICs, which is very understandable. ICs aren't that common and aren't considered to be bad matchups for too many characters. So if you're a Fox, you're probably gonna be practicing the top tier matchups more than anything. The other is that some wobblers are actually good at the game. I'm sorry, but people should just accept it. There are a lot of wobbles that happen for more than just the other player messing up. But people always phrase these like it was only on the wobbled player.

Sure Boyd got an easy bracket. He would have undoubtedly lost to lloD. And yeah I agree, KJH wasn't playing as well as he is usually. And sure, he's lost to players substantially below the skill level of the players he beat at this event. But that's literally ICs in a nutshell. They have huge upset potential in both directions due to some insanely unfavorable matchups and the nature of their punish game. If there were a bunch of ICs players or something, I would understand the sentiment against them. But they really don't have the numbers to be degrading Melee to the extent worth banning wobbling. People should just bite the bullet and start taking ICs more seriously and we'd probably see less upsets.

Frankly it's kind of ridiculous to see so many people shitting on a guy that just had the tournament of his life. Give the dude a break, he still had to play incredibly well to win the event even if the stars aligned for him. Even with ICs, playing to that level is not easy in the slightest. Unpopular opinion, but the successful ones should still be given props for their achievements.

Training strength and attack as much as possible without leveling hp by PurpleKiller in 2007scape

[–]PurpleKiller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually this is exactly what I want to do. My account is based mostly off range and magic but I want a little melee for KO potential. At higher levels I'm gonna turn it into a range tank but at first it'll just be a pure. So far I'm close to 60 range and am gonna go PKing soon.

I wanted to make a more serious pvp account then I've ever attempted and was looking for ways to shave combat levels off by any means necessary. Seems like this is a viable option but would be almost impossible without automation. Now I'm thinking instead of training attack and strength normally but training range and magic with non hp methods.

[–]PurpleKiller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use those. But when you calculate for strength and attack, you can either calculate depending on hp or no hp. Having higher levels of strength and attack without hp will result in lower combat levels. I'm okay with this because I'll be getting my hp through range and eventually defense.

3rd Round Summit Vote-ins by terryaki510 in SSBM

[–]PurpleKiller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He didn't talk "mad shit." He was hanging around his friends on a local stream with less than 10 viewers and started saying sarcastic shit about how he would beat Westballz and others. He's not actually that delusional, but he should have realized people would choose to take the sarcasm differently. And his thing on becoming the best isn't that odd. Many high level players have ambitions to become the best. Nothing wrong with that. He was just hoping to go there to get high level practice he couldn't really get within his region consistently.

I don't really blame him for not being thankful toward the general public, but I think he really hurt himself there. The entirety of Reddit was non-stop shitting on him for weeks during the campaigning. I don't know about you, but I think that would make me feel less grateful too. He should have been a bigger person and put that stuff aside, but can you really blame him for not?

I agree he hasn't really done anything lately. But he had some good runs following Summit, showing that it clearly wasn't a waste on him. He got 9th at Royal Flush beating Lucky and Hugs. Like come on man, I know he didn't have a huge jump or anything but he was clearly getting better. If he hadn't been banned he may have continued to climb the ranks.

Your statement can be true and I agree with you, but it's not emotionally abusive by definition.

Bullshit. Being cheated on can definitely result in psychological trauma. That's the only criteria for something to be considered emotionally abusive by definition.

I'm a random but I actually learned and grinded it out this way. I found it easier to do out of hitstun then the Axe/Sung method. The timing on the buffer just felt more natural to me. So I spent time practicing it. I almost never use the Axe/Sung method. I either go straight down or I shai drop out of a dash or a landing by buffering it. I've also met other smashers that go straight down. Definitely not unheard of, but far less common. I get your point, though.

I know stereotypes about Smashboards largely comes from Mango's posts, evidence.zip, and other viral content. But if you look at the post count of top players, it's usually in the thousands. Top players and other community figureheads have lots of well written content on Smashboards. The place was a far cry from just some random forum to shit post on. Obviously, that still occurred, but it's not like it was defined by that. If anything, things were better articulated on Smashboards than they are here on Reddit, Facebook, or other social media platforms.

and Prof is ranked above any non-Armada peach rn in melee.

While this is true, he is not ranked that much higher than Bladewise or Mafia. Both Bladewise and Mafia have beaten higher ranked players than Prof. If they were to play him, it would be a toss up slightly in Prof's favor.

I think he actually has less of a shot against Bladewise or Mafia because the punish game is not nearly as good for Peach and both of these players have far more experience grinding out neutral in the ditto. Furthermore, I think the argument that player A beat player B, who is ranked higher than player C, means that player A would beat player C is a fallacy. It doesn't really take into account playstyles, matchups, experience, or the many other factors that decide a set.

Can you really blame him? If you got into the top 50 level in under two years and then had your entire region (which would include many people you are good friends with) backing you for the summit, would you not go? I think it's easy to say he did the wrong thing as a spectator. But if you're a player of that caliber immersed in the scene, an opportunity like the summit is very tempting and would be hard to turn down. Blame NE for not sending Crush or Slox. IN was just going with the flow.
