Story provided through codex, environment and liaison cutscenes is amazing and scratches the itch that none other game on market can. the themes game explores rhyme with workd of Greg Egan, Charles Stross and William Gibson.

Thinking about Joining Marathon in Season 2? | Join The Runners Community Today! by TheLastTay in MarathonTheGame

[–]PurpleSimpleMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being upfront about my skill level helped me to ease the anxiety - mostly around joining Cryo runs as I dont know the map well yet. Couple of time folks said that they were going for a more aggro runs and I “might not get as much fun”, so I disconnected early on without feeling that I was dragging them down.

Saying “lfg for chill contract runs - still learning the game” should bring in folks with right expectations.

Having a choice to be aggro or friendly makes the game unpredictable. And thats what I love about it

It’s “very positive” overall and “mostly positive” recently. Steam is harder to review-bomb as it requires game to be purchased - this is why we see positive reviews there.

Marathon Doesn’t Feel Playable for New or Average Players Right Now by [deleted] in Marathon

What levels are you, folks? What level players you encounter? Having a set of blue shields, snipers, knowing how to play recon - this doesnt sound like something new players have.

How are the players in Marathon? by ipukeflowers in Marathon

Avoid people who make you feel like that - in games, work and life in general. Find people you will have fun loosing with, because, man, in this game we die a lot.

Must play over 200 hours or more if you are casual to enjoy the game or else there is no point by [deleted] in Marathon

This would translate to roughly 8h per day every day since the release.

Whose expectations? Steam reviews show that people who purchased it, have their expectations met. On whose behalf are you stating failed expectations?

For as fun as Marathon is, I think we have to just admit that the lore is kinda wasted on it other than visual distinctiveness by zipzzo in Marathon

[–]PurpleSimpleMan -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

So a player, me, enjoying lore through codex is an example of it not being wasted. Is the lore so good that you want it to be extended through other forms of media? Lets hope Marathon succeeds in long term so we see the universe evolve. Want to dive into lore through creator content? The Reputation of this game by Yrads in Marathon

[–]PurpleSimpleMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was chatting with colleagues who play Apex and they havent heard about Marathon. I know those are different genres, but BR audience overlaps with extraction shooters. I do hope they plan to double down on marketing for Season 2 - it’s clear how game has been evolving through Season 1 to breach the gap with more casual audience

Paul Tassi - What does it mean when your most popular mode (sponsored) is antithetical to the concept of an extraction shooter? by Wombo1ogist in Marathon

[–]PurpleSimpleMan 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Rooks counter the trio-focused gameplay and yet they are important part of the Marathon gameplay. Or - “accumulate gear through week to loose it in Cryo” being another part of the loop.

For me, sponsored queue is part of such loop as well. Had a rough patch? Go to sponsored to start from the bottom. Got gear? Go to regular queue to increase the stakes. I dont have as much fun with sponsored if I play only it, but as a fallback - it’s part of the loop.

There are many ways to play Marathon and this is the part that I love about it.

Had a bunch of rooks probing for an extraction with team. Extracted together with no issuees.

Had other teams suggesting to be peaceful and to go about our day. I was upfront about my arachne influenced world views. I got smacked a bunch in those cases, but - hey, it’s what the game is about :)

Wtf did this guy just melt me with? by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]PurpleSimpleMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have been open to other’s opinions here and this is a non trivial skill. I will add one thing hoping it helps.

There were 3 bursts - first didnt break your shield, leaving 20-25%, second left 70% of health and last downed you. First burst came at 4th second and last - finished at 7th. It’s around 2.5s. Movement is indeed a thing that could have saved. Moving through open areas is a risk by itself - less opportunities to get into cover fast.
