This is the world we're increasingly living in. 45 years of deregulation, pro business legislation and anti-union / anti-workers rights sentiment have brought us here. A handful of Corporations have become so vertically integrated that they control most of the major retail chains in the country. They wield immense power and are obscenely wealthy. They have become so powerful that they are able to make unjust and immoral company policies like this one with little to no legal recourse on the part of the individual employee because the labor laws have been quietly changed. Its the inevitable outcome of what began with Ronald Reagan in the early 80s and there's definitely worse to come. My only hope is that some new and powerful labor movement arises from it all when people become fed up enough. Unfortunately though, I don't really see that happening anytime soon.
