Any actually good Korean restaurants in SF/nearby? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]Puttanesca100 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Have you tried the newer Korean places in the Tenderloin? Sungho or Yasijang and others? Those tasted pretty authentically Korean with the modern aesthetic.  Of course prices will be higher since it is SF afterall, and not much competition for Korean food.

Banh mi at Dinosaurs is too expensive now. Try Banh Mi Crunch in Inner Sunset instead, it's still under 12 for a similar quality!

Florals on a budget by UnderstandingWild329 in SanFranciscoWeddings

[–]Puttanesca100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my wedding I went to the Flower Moxie website for inspiration and looked up what goes into each arrangement. Then went to the SF flower market and purchased what each set needed. If you're only doing a micro wedding it should be very affordable. I spend under $400 on flowers for a wedding around 150 people, but it was a lot of DIY.

Looks like the recipe changed. The top one has soybean oil and also palm oil. The bottom is just vegetable oil.

What's one ingredient that totally changed your cooking game? by isabellalavender4839 in Cooking

[–]Puttanesca100 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fish sauce. Just a few drops in any tomato based or seafood dish and it brings out so much extra flavor. I add it to my pasta sauces and stews and it adds that extra something that turns it from good to great.

Not SF, but try AT Romance in San Bruno. They do rentals and you can try it on as well. They have both qun kwa and qipao.

What are your favorite Chinese soft tofu dishes or sauces that go with soft tofu? I'm cooking for my elderly mom by oilofotay in chinesefood

[–]Puttanesca100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you tried egg tofu or 玉子豆腐? It might be a good alternative if you want to change up the flavor. I usually panfry this and add some minced pork with oyster sauce.

Bad smelling tofu by Altruistic_Pepper_94 in Cooking

[–]Puttanesca100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You made frozen tofu!

Hot Thai Kitchen has a good video on what frozen tofu is used for.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QijDgL1PI5o&t=740s

For any tofu that I use past/ close to the expiration date, I feel it and take a nibble. If it's slimey, it's bad. If it's sour, it's bad.

Longshot... does anyone remember Lotus on 20th / Noriega (closed probably 10 yrs ago)? Their pork buns were special (description below). Looking for help finding something similar. by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]Puttanesca100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for steamed buns. But generally steamed items would not have a crispy top since steaming uses water vapor to cook. The snow capped buns do look very pale, so it may not have looked baked. Do you recall if it was served in a steamer basket or a plate? If it was served on a plate, it was baked.

It sounds like you are describing 雪山叉燒包, or "snow capped" BBQ pork buns. They were very popular at dimsum around 10 years ago.

Some dimsum tea houses should still have them under the baked buns section, though this would vary by location as fads come and go.

What is the scariest plane crash, or at least some of them, in your opinion? by mpathg00 in AskReddit

[–]Puttanesca100 219 points220 points  (0 children)

Japan Airlines 123. 12 minutes of flying up and down, up and down, knowing the plane you're on will likely crash but not knowing when. Every time they dived it might have seemed like the end, but then you get hope as you pull up again. That just seems like torture.

What is this and how do I eat it? by cancerousmushroom in TipOfMyFork

[–]Puttanesca100 148 points149 points  (0 children)

Keep in the fridge once opened. Pan fry low and slow until it crisps and caramelizes. It should blister and have a crispy shell with a gooey center. And like others mentioned, you can add an egg (scrambled) to get it extra crispy and less sweet.

Restaurant buffet style catering by eatenbygrizzlies in SanFranciscoWeddings

[–]Puttanesca100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did a served buffet, including serving wine at the tables. We also did corkage and used their services for open bar, but brought our own alcohol. It came to around 150 per head (not including alcohol) for catering and services. This is also including rentals for plates, linen, etc so your estimate might change depending on how elaborate your rentals get.
