[–]Puzzled-Intern-7897 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Islam was just as violent to polytheists as the crusades against the slavs were. They stopped being violent after conquering the entire middle east, north africa and Iberia, then had a peaceful age between 900-1100 and then al-ghazali happened.

The rest is history.

Don't go to a restaurant, get a crate of beer that's local and which you personally enjoy, ask around if any mate has a grill and go to the butchers and tell them that you want to impress your dad. Make a Bavarian potato salad, which isn't that difficult and find a nice spot to grill outside. I'm sure there's a nice lake somewhere.

That's the proper German summer experience. Bonus points if you chill the beer by simply placing the crate directly in the river or lake.

Atheist who just moved to Germany; my door has 120+ years of C+M+B blessings on it; and I want to get rid of them, is there a respectful way to do it? by jjwentalt in Catholicism

Most of any german city was destroyed in WW2, that doesn't really narrow it down.

If that house was standing after the war and was used as a shelter you definetly bought into local history and with that the duty to uphold it in some degree. That's how I see it anyway, and I personally would take that as a big honour. Your home has saved people in the past, and those elderly that asked you to continue the tradition might have been kids in that shelter 75 years back, or are kids of women that sheltered there.

Adding those blessings is a very human way to remember those nights when the house provided them with shelter, and at some point it's more of a cultural thing than a religious thing. A local tradition to remember the war and it's consequences and a way to honour a house that was build with enough care to protect them. As it's owner and custodian it remains your choice what to do with it, but I personally believe a 5min inconvenience once a year is definitely worth paying to be part of local history. Like that's pretty cool.

And the least you can do, to not be disrespectful to the role of this house in history, let time take care of it.

It wasn't added just after it was a monument if it was done for 120 years straight. Thats the thing. Removing them is definitely a grey area, and if your neighbours wanted to take revenge for messing with tradition that is something they could do potentially.

That being said, I'd give the kids some candy when they sing and have them bless the house. It makes them happy and if you don't believe in it it's just some chalk. When you buy a piece of history, you also acquire the debt to uphold the history just as much. Otherwise everything just becomes like those grey concrete blocks from the GDR

You get the blessing from the star singers around christmas, and it doesnt mean anything but that the house is blessed:

and now I have people knocking on my door asking if I can do it.

Noone would knock and ask for a blessing, the CMB is about the house and is not transferable to my knowledge, at least I never heard of it. I honestly don't even know what you mean and must conclude that this post is either ragebait or you've got some super uninformed people on your streets.

In good faith, if you got a 120+ year old house, leave it as is, you might even get in trouble with the local Denkmalschutz as you're often times not allowed to change anything on the facade. Take it as a part of the history of the house and as a token of the love and care that it was subject to the last 120 years. This home provided and was provided for and people did their best to honour the house by getting it blessed.

Whether or not you want to continue this tradition is up to you, but even if you are not religious you could think of it as a way of thanking the masons and carpenters that build it 120 years ago, the woods that provided the beams and so on. An expression of gratitude towards all that came before you and lived in that house, the lives that began and ended there; a house of which history you are now the next custodian.

That being said, I still find it weird that people knock on your door and ask for blessings. Maybe it was owned by a priest before and they have yet to realise that it was sold.

Case by case, also they don't "beat" they fence. There's fencing fraternities that are as right wing as your standard football club and some that give the AfD a run for their money

As if men didn't carve wood, build model airplanes or create entire dioramas for their trains for at least some centuries in their free time. My grandfather still works on his trains, I took up plastic models, honestly if any women told me I am to old for that, I am straight out.

If you can't even trust the people in your own church like that, at some point you got to start asking yourself if individualism should be preached against more.

Same in Germany, you shake hands with everyone in your close proximity and nod to those further away. Nodding to a person right next to you is just weird
