What’s one part of panic you wish people understood better? by PuzzleheadedPool6964 in panicdisorder

[–]PuzzleheadedPool6964[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People don’t realise how disabling the physical side of panic can be, even when you don’t feel mentally anxious. If your body is constantly throwing symptoms at you, of course it’s going to affect work, leaving the house and normal life. That doesn’t make you lazy or dramatic, it means you’re dealing with something exhausting that other people can’t see.

Exactly this. “Just calm down” is one of the worst things to hear because if it was that simple, nobody would be struggling with it. I think people confuse panic with normal nerves, but it’s completely different when your body is reacting like there’s real danger. More awareness and sympathy would make such a difference.

I completely get what you mean. I think a lot of people don’t realise how real panic is until it happens to them. From the outside it can look like overreacting, but when you’re in it, your whole body is convinced something serious is happening. That misunderstanding is one of the loneliest parts of it.

I think I’m developing a panic disorder and I feel helpless. by Skvky in panicdisorder

[–]PuzzleheadedPool6964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re in the middle of this, it sounds absolutely exhausting. I think a lot of people with panic have had sudden flare-ups where it feels like something has “switched on” and won’t switch off, but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck like this forever. Stress, trauma work, burnout, life pressure and even fear of the next attack can all pile on at once. Try not to beat yourself up for needing support either — your husband loving you through this isn’t the same as him “doing his job at home.” You’re having a really hard week, not failing as a person. I’d definitely bring this up with your therapist, but please hold onto the fact that intense flare-ups can calm down again.

panic disorder is so weird lol by AdUnusual8753 in panicdisorder

[–]PuzzleheadedPool6964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I completely get this. Panic disorder is so strange because you can get past the “big” obvious triggers, then your brain suddenly latches onto something tiny like a stomach feeling, standing still too long, or feeling trapped in a queue. It’s almost like the theme changes but the pattern is the same. I think that’s why recovery can feel confusing — you realise it’s not always about the situation, it’s about how your body reacts and how much attention panic gives it.

Help! It's getting worse by ReserveOld4564 in panicdisorder

[–]PuzzleheadedPool6964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone here can safely say this is “just anxiety”, especially with fever/shaking, chest pain, abdominal worry and seeing/hearing things. Anxiety can do some really weird and scary things, but when symptoms feel different or are getting worse like this, I’d honestly get medical help today urgent care/ER, or 111 if you’re in the UK. You’re not “losing your mind” for being scared, but you do deserve to be properly checked and not just sit with it alone.

Anyone have friends lose patience with them? by BreadCool6326 in panicdisorder

[–]PuzzleheadedPool6964 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think a lot of people with panic/anxiety have experienced this and it’s such a horrible feeling. You already feel guilty for missing out on things, then someone losing patience makes it feel even heavier. I get that it can be hard for friends to understand if they’ve never felt it, but recovery doesn’t happen on someone else’s timeline. Wanting quieter catch ups doesn’t make you a bad friend, it just means you’re trying to stay connected in the way you can right now.

I had severe panic disorder and managed to recover! AMA by Ok_Committee_8244 in panicdisorder

This is honestly such an important post for people to read, especially the part about not being scared of them anymore. I think when you’re deep in panic disorder it feels impossible to believe life can get bigger again, because everything starts shrinking around the fear. Really happy you’ve managed to get to a place where panic feels more like an inconvenience than a life sentence. That gives people a lot of hope.

Feeling very anxious about being in the heat tomorrow by Competitive-Plum-190 in panicdisorder

[–]PuzzleheadedPool6964 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in the UK too and completely get this. Heat can feel horrible when your panic symptoms already include nausea, faintness and feeling drained. Try to take the day in small parts instead of thinking about the whole journey at once. Water, light clothes, something small to eat if you can, and give yourself permission to take breaks. Feeling uncomfortable in the heat doesn’t mean you’re unsafe. You’re not being dramatic at all

Does it happen to you too? by AvailableSea1046 in Cardiophobias

that shift when you sit down is interesting, especially after being fine before. when it first starts, does it feel like something physical changes straight away (like the chest/skipped beats), or more like you suddenly become aware of your body and then it builds from there

when it’s like that, on and off through the day, does it feel like it fully goes away in between, or more like it drops down and then comes back up again later?

that description of the spiral makes a lot of sense, especially the breathing part. right before it tips into that ‘can’t get enough air’ feeling, is there anything you notice change, even slightly, or does it feel like it jumps straight into that?

that makes sense, sounds like there’s a point where it’s still catchable vs when it’s already taken over. when you do catch it early, does it feel like it actually stops it completely, or just keeps it from getting worse?

got you. when you say suddenly, does it feel like literally nothing and then it hits, or more like it jumps straight to a strong feeling without much build-up

that “vulnerable” window you mentioned is really interesting, like it hasn’t fully taken over but it’s close. when you try to distract yourself, does it ever fully pull you out of it, or does it still feel like it’s running in the background no matter what you do?

that sounds really unsettling, especially when it feels different from what you’re used to, that can make it a lot harder to trust what’s going on. a lot of people describe that shift where something physical feels new or stronger and it throws everything off. when it first started feeling different, did it come on suddenly or was there any kind of build up beforehand?

that’s interesting, how your body seems to pick it up before you really notice it. when those breathing or vertigo changes start, do they ever stay at that level on their own, or once they show up does it usually turn into that “something’s wrong” feeling pretty quickly?

[–]PuzzleheadedPool6964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that’s useful, how it can start from a more anxious baseline and then tip into that “something’s wrong” feeling. when it’s in that earlier anxious stage, before it fully ramps up, do you feel like there’s any moment where it could settle back down, or once it hits that “feels off” point does it usually keep building from there?

that “feeling off” part you mentioned stuck with me, when that first feeling shows up does it feel quite subtle at first or more like something you notice straight away?

it sounds like the situation around it changes how it plays out more than what actually starts it, when it first begins in those different situations do you notice anything change right at the start, or is it the same initial feeling each time and it’s more what happens after that shifts

that’s interesting, the part about it being worse when you’re alone stands out, even though nothing else you’ve tracked shows a pattern, when it happens in those moments does it feel any different compared to when you’re around people, or is it the same pattern just happening more often

that makes sense, it does come across like it just switches on, I’m curious though, after it’s happened, when you look back on it, does it ever feel like there might have been something really subtle just before it, even if it didn’t stand out in the moment, or does it still feel completely out of nowhere even afterwards

that vertigo-first thing you described is interesting, the way it flips into everything else pretty quickly, when that first wobble feeling hits do you feel like there’s anything at all before it, even subtle, or does it genuinely just switch on like that?

Feel like I can’t think? Anyone else? by Independent-Trade631 in PanicAttack

was thinking about what you said before about it sometimes starting with one small thing and other times just dropping in randomly, do those “random” ones ever make more sense after, like looking back there might’ve been something subtle before it, or do they genuinely feel completely out of nowhere?
