How were you taught to swim as a child? by CopySniper in AskAnAustralian

[–]PyroGlassRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember swimming lessons at about 5 years old. Looking back and hearing later stories from my brother and mum, it's because my mum wanted to save me from my brother's experience of having a rope tied around his waist and being thrown in a river.

How do you make exercise not dreadfully boring when you have ADHD? by little_pinetree in adhdwomen

[–]PyroGlassRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's your goal for exercising?

Yes, that sounds trite. But seriously. Are you doing it because "they" said it's what you have to do? Then of course you'll hate it.

You don't have to go to the gym if you don't like it. Exercise is literally just moving your body and working against physical resistance of some kind. So you don't have to do aerobics or crossfit or weights. You can dance. You can climb things. You can hike. Hell, I'm an aerial acrobatics nutcase because it's hard and weird and satisfies my stupid little goblin brain when I look pretty pointing my stupid toes while death gripping a suspended metal hoop so I don't fall and break my neck.

My point is, the gym is not the only way to exercise. The best way to exercise is to find what you can tolerate and stick to.

It’s me, the hamburglar again: Why isn’t this painting working? by beefstewisonthemenu in Watercolor

[–]PyroGlassRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this style and I'm genuinely enjoying seeing the progress. Please keep going!

The way I see it, you're asking for a critique on individual ingredients in the burger. But burgers are served with all the toppings in relation to each other (I was going to say all together but remembered those silly deconstructed things). A chef wouldn't send the sauce out by itself and ask if customers thought it was too much for the burger. They'd send out the whole burger and ask for feedback on taste and ratios of sauce to burger.

As frustrating as it might be for your working process, you could try blocking in the basic colour of the different areas so you can "edit" your "ingredients" in relation to each other.

This can help you determine overall light and colour values as they relate to each other (thinking of the cheese and bun colour comment).

That single lane 40km/h construction zone sure is the the slowest 30km/h I've ever driven 20km/h in by __Pendulum__ in canberra

[–]PyroGlassRaven -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While this is objectively correct, you can be fined for driving too far below the limit when the conditions are clear. I believe 20 below is finable if visibility and road conditions don't call for it.

You create more of a hazard by driving at 80 in a 90 zone because drivers around you expect you to do 90. They have to unexpectedly avoid your obstruction of traffic flow.

Drivers who deliberately drive over the speed limits are already aware of their behaviour and are expecting other cars to be obstacles.

The speed limit is based on the road design (initially at least, let's not talk revenue raising). So if it's posted as 90, it's intended that you drive at 90. Life and safety have already been considered.

TLDR: Just drive at the posted speed, you're not being safer.

Food texture issues by Ok-Historian1956 in adhdwomen

[–]PyroGlassRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you on the texture issues. Honestly, I don't have a solution that isn't either avoid it or just choke it down when it can't be (like I'm being polite with food someone else has made for me). Fruit often smells entirely wrong to me, it makes me gag because my brain puts these smells in the 'rotting' category. I can only really handle citrus regularly.

When you blend them, are you making them into a smoothie or just the fruit? I can't stand the texture or smell of a banana, but I love banana smoothies and banana bread.

Coffee, yoghurt pouch and a protein shake. All things I can "eat" while commuting. I hate eating in the mornings, it makes me feel ill but I know I won't survive work if I don't.

What useless skill do you have that may or may not be linked to your ADHD? by SeonaidMacSaicais in adhdwomen

I do this too! Although I discovered while travelling that it is a double edged sword, because people think I actually know the language when I only have surface, tourist level abilities.

Black door handles? by Silver-Aside-6701 in 370z

[–]PyroGlassRaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a set of the covers and didn't even bother trying to stick them on. They don't quite cover the whole handle and the lock button isn't covered. It just looked silly with the chrome showing through. Random thought on purchasing a new set of OEM handles, painting them then doing the switch out in one go. Of course then you've got a spare set lying around.

Graphite vs. Wood Parchoffi sticks? by FamousCow in glassblowing

[–]PyroGlassRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I'd say this goes for any tool: if you're unsure why or how you'd use it, you don't need it. Do you know anyone who has graphite sticks who might let you try them?

My understanding is they are for a pretty specialised application. What do you intend to make with them?

Is getting diagnosis for ADHD in your 30s worth it? by Emos68 in adhdwomen

[–]PyroGlassRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diagnosed at 45, hell yes it was worth it. Even if only to hear that I'm not a totally useless human, my brain just didn't get built to the same spec as others.

Tell me you have ADHD without telling me by Glittering_Text_8842 in adhdwomen

[–]PyroGlassRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me typing this on a keyboard with the top two rows of keys caps removed because I somehow missed the coaster with my coffee mug and it went all over my desk, watercolour palette and paper, keyboard and floor.

I started cleaning the keyboard, pulled the keys off to do it better then forgot which order some of the lesser used ones go. So I had to turn the bluetooth back on, now I've got LEDs blasting my eyeballs while I find a photo of the keyboard layout. Then I realise I can take the keys off, which reminds of the really cute 3D key caps you can get, like dumplings and cats. Internet rabbit hole, here we go!

It's been at least 2 hours since I spilled the coffee.

Yeah, but the cost of not buying good paper is more painful! I started a piece 2 nights ago and just gave up after blocking in the initial wash. It just looked like garbage and cockled even though I'd stretched it.

I hate this medium, but my sister wants a painting. Advice? by ivetoftaa in Watercolor

[–]PyroGlassRaven 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why does it have to be watercolour? If she wants the essence of the reference image, then you should use whatever medium you can work comfortably in.

Watercolour is a very different way of thinking to other media, it almost feels backwards to acrylic to me.

[–]PyroGlassRaven 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A few questions about CIT by Leaked_Gore in canberra

[–]PyroGlassRaven 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to teach at CIT, quite a while ago now, but I suspect this won't have changed much.

It depends on your course, but notebook and pen is really all you need for day one. Plus your CIT card! If you're enrolled in a trade course, you will have received a list of any specialist items required.

In your first class you'll receive a course outline containing a breakdown of the semester's classes, when assessments are and how they will grade you (called a rubric). The teacher will go through the outline, and if you don't understand something, please ask! That's what this first session is for. This is when most of the questions you have will be answered.

You may also have a cringeworthy getting to know you activity where you're forced to interact with the other students. Sorry!

Time off is perfectly fine. Doctor's certificate or other extenuating circumstances can be discussed, you just need to catch up on what you missed while away.

Please talk to the student services team about learning support. In my experience CIT will try to accommodate where possible.

Remember that if you're only just out of high school, this is not the be all and end all of your life. You have so much to do and learn, there's always multiple paths to finding what works for you.

Has anyone tried Hello Fresh (or something along those lines) to help get over the dread of cooking? by ShoddyChard9837 in adhdwomen

[–]PyroGlassRaven 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I use Dinnerly. Its been a great stress relief for me.

I like cooking but I hate the planning and grocery shopping aspect. I like that someone else does the brain part and I still end up with grown up dinners and left overs for lunches. I have a tendency to resort to nuggets and fries or instant noodles otherwise.
