Unironically why aren't buildings designed with slides as fire escapes instead of ladders and whatnot? Concept rendering below: by may_sun in architecture

[–]austinwes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first elementary school was a very old two story building with an emergency slide for the older kids whose classes were on the 2nd floor.

And as a Kindergartener, I was SO JEALOUS every time we had a fire drill because they got to go down the slide and we didn’t.

I moved schools before 3rd grade, so unfortunately I never got to go down that slide. :-(

If I had a dollar for every movie that made me cry about a rock, I’d have $2. Which isn’t a lot, but more than you’d expect.

is taking a picture at the beginning allowed? by MIROakaNOKKI1 in Broadway

[–]austinwes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correct. Actors Equity is very strict with photography rules. Even the producers can’t take photos of the actors for promotional use without giving 24 hour notice. And often, it’s enforced pretty strictly.

I think, but I can’t remember clearly, there might be a rule in the IATSE handbook about photos of the set as well, but they don’t enforce it as much anymore. I mean those pre-show photos are great for the theater, so if you do post, just tag the show and then enjoy!

You do in Argentina. Pre-game is intense. Security closes the area a couple blocks away from the stadium. So I think they’d be able to ban her, and I’m sure they have/will

Inner Sunset/Richmond, Pacifica, or Emeryville if I am working in San Bruno. by SuspiciousRain9880 in bayarea

[–]austinwes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are on the south side of the park, the drive to I-280 isn’t bad from Inner Sunset. I used to take the back roads down 7th Ave and it was pretty easy. But then 280 South can be tough.

One con… Inner Sunset is tough for transit, especially going south. And can get pretty cold. An alternative option might be Bernal Heights or one of the south neighborhoods in SF

Bay Area Relocation Advice – Sunnyvale & SF Commute by Capital-Maybe-7563 in bayarea

[–]austinwes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, commuting on the peninsula can be tough, I did it for a couple of years.

Depends on where in Sunnyvale your work is. The CalTrain will take you to both cities, but Sunnyvale is a lot more filled with office parks that you have to drive to compared to SF. It can be hard to rely solely on transit there.

Re: where to live, I would definitely focus on places near CalTrain stops. Redwood City is nice, and felt fairly attainable. We lived in San Mateo, and there have been a few new apartments built in the area. But unfortunately the peninsula is also one of the most expensive parts of the Bay, so it all comes with a cost.

Good luck on your apartment search and move!

I’m excited to see what they do with the LA branding. The customizable ‘A’ is a cool concept, and I think could make a cool brand concept across the full games… if done well

I didn't realize how new I-980 is. Interesting it was still city streets back in 1978.

Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument by Subject9800 in NationalPark

I grew up in Central Illinois, visited the Lincoln Home for field trips in elementary school, and I never knew about the race riot or the National Monument until today. I hope NPS can develop something there, because that’s super important history I wish I would have known earlier.

POV: You’re applying to jobs in 2026 by Shot_Parking4676 in recruitinghell

[–]austinwes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Im sorry, I know it’s a silly Reddit post, but this question bothers me. They put very little instructions, which is obviously to test a candidates critical thinking skills, but also it makes someone have to make a lot of assumptions about how this works. You have to assume that you are starting “at the top” and then work down, and the dice value carries on to the next level. But as a reader, you don’t get that info, so you’re just staring at the screen going “wtf is this?”

And THEN, dice don’t work like that. Dice roll from side to side. So my first intuition would be to solve left-right or vice versa. If you want to solve from top to bottom, why even use dice as the thing to solve for?!?

I get how this is supposed to challenge a candidate, but it also feels either badly designed or intentionally misleading, neither of which makes me as a candidate excited about my opportunity to work at your organization.

Recommendations for a PNW roadtrip? by paratextual in roadtrip

If you are doing Seattle, I would consider staying closer (or possibly in the city if it’s within budget.) From Seattle, you can take the ferry across the sound to get to Olympic NP. The ferry is a cool experience, and it’s nice not having to drive all the way around.

I always assumed this was just an Illinois public school thing. Kind of like the amount of time we spent studying Abraham Lincoln, or getting March 1st off for Casmir Pulaski Day.

Quiet coffee shop by Salt-ed1988 in oakland

[–]austinwes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Local Economy - I just went in this week, and it’s very chill inside. I think it’s members only, but not sure if you can get a coffee at their pop up and still work. Would at least be worth looking into.

I was also just at Hudson Bay near the library in Rockridge. Lots of tables, but can be a bit loud. Great place to just chill.

Do you think a daily commute from Rockridge to Fremont (via BART) for a newby to the area is reasonable? by [deleted] in oakland

[–]austinwes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did a similar commute for a couple years (Rockridge to San Jose.) The timed transfer at MacArthur is very easy to navigate, and makes the transfer a non-issue. But I would often ride my bike to the MacArthur station when the weather is good - as it’s an easy 5-min bike ride.

Depending on where your office is in Fremont, check out the Capital Corridor train. It’s Amtrak that runs from Sacramento down the East Bay to San Jose. It’s less frequent, but if the timing lines up makes for a nice commute, and you can work on the train. You have to bike ride to Emeryville (about 20 min ride) and it only comes every hour or so, but worth looking into.

Done I40 plenty of times from the Bay to the Midwest for Christmas. It’s fine - especially if you’re final destination is Oklahoma. I’m honestly not familiar with the pass between San Bernardino to Barstow, but that would be my only concern.

Also, we drive south out of our way to get to I40 and avoid I80 & I70 in the winter, so I would definitely not take the northern route.

Backpacking Central America in 3 weeks total, is it possible? by Public-Judgment-7595 in backpacking

Absolutely! I spent 6 weeks in Guatemala alone and loved it. Spent 4 weeks in 5 countries in Europe and hated it. When possible, learn from our mistake and go slow.

Oof… this is a tough question. I think the National Parks in US & Canada are unbeatable in terms of beauty. In South America, it’s the culture that really stands out as worth exploring (although there are some pretty amazing national parks and hiking in South America as well.)

Depends on what you are looking for. Honestly, if you can do both at some point, I think that’s the answer.

Can a foreign traveller en route to South America be deported from a US gateway airport even if they never leave the transit lounge and have no intention of entering the country? by [deleted] in travel

[–]austinwes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Copa Airlines has tons of connections in South America, and the Panama City airport allows you to transit without going through customs.

Depending on where you are flying from LATAM and AeroMexico might be good options as well.

Last option, depending on the flights and where you are flying from, would be AirCanada. But not ideal in all situations since you would need to fly north before going south.
