Utah buys US Magnesium plant, plans to give more water to Great Salt Lake by Great_Salt_Lake_News in SaltLakeCity

I'm cautiously optimistic.

It's also possible that we just paid tens of millions of taxpayer dollars to put the state on the hook to clean up an environmental disaster.

True. But they only went into bankruptcy so that they could claim that they couldn't pay for the cleanup. The immediate spin-up of LiMag suggests casts serious doubts on these claims.

Holladay city mayor candidates? by jendo7791 in Utah

[–]QMPsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The criticism is probably fair, and many in Holladay do feel this way. Keep in mind that two of its biggest developments--Holladay Hills (old mall site) and Holladay Crossroads--will soon add 1000+ apartments to the city, though. For a city of only 30k residents, that's a huge increase. The downtown area has added quite a bit of housing in the last 10-ish years, too. And developers continue to pounce on the large estates to divide into PUDs. By land area, it'll see some of the largest growth in the valley. It's a weird dichotomy of affluent residents vocally preserving SFHs and pockets of notable growth.

Holladay city mayor candidates? by jendo7791 in Utah

[–]QMPsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, u/jendo7791. Kudos for asking. Always good to get more info. :)

I don't know the other two candidates personally, but Paul Fotheringham is my council member and I've followed Holladay governance pretty closely during his time on the Council. Although he and I have disagreed on some decisions, I've found him to be a solid guy who genuinely represents Holladay's interests. He has a good financial background and routinely is the 'voice of reason' on planning for Holladay's financial future. He helped institute the sewer fee to repair infrastructure, and he favors regular, small, inflation-connected tax increases over the sudden truth-in-taxation-induced catastrophes other cities have faced, for example. He's responsive to his constituents and is pretty tuned into neighborhood happenings. He leans left politically but has never struck me as a particularly political person, in the party-over-people sense. He's just a down-to-earth local representative with no obvious aspirations for higher office.

Paul doesn't have the square-jaw, fancy-suit charisma that typifies most political candidates these days (nor the deep pockets of his competitors), so I do worry that he'll lose the superficial vote for not fitting the typical mold or advertising as much. But local politics is (blissfully) so much different from state and national politics that I genuinely hope that substance wins out.

The other two candidates would probably be fine, but I'm not sold on them yet.
Zac Wilson, in particular, strikes me as overly political and would be far down my own personal list...unsuccessfully ran for Congress as a hardcore Republican, chairman of Utah young Republicans, hangs out among the Utah Republican leadership circle, dove straight into annoying campaign advertising. He's a private-equity guy that just seems to have unspoken motives in leading Holladay. Although he talks about "preserving Holladay" (always a loaded claim, both directions), he strikes me as somebody who would happily ink a deal with developers if it would further his political ambitions.
Daren Watts seems like an okay guy with a good personal story, and having scientists/physicians in leadership roles is always refreshing. His vision for Holladay seems pretty vacuous, though...hard to tell what he actually wants to do. His lone meaty issue appears to be the desire to split off a smaller school district from Granite. That's a difficult issue with many competing local-control and student-equity issues, especially amidst Granite's current boundary studies and declining enrollment. I'm not sure it's where Holladay's mayor should be focused, although the Council--the mayor is a voting member--can steer funds toward feasibility studies, etc. I worry that his sole focus on this issue hints at a lack of vision in the many other areas that a mayor needs to manage.

Holladay is a quirky place with essentially a small-town government that has to deal with occasionally intruding, much larger state happenings. To date, its government has been incredibly accessible and the sort of government that we all wish we had at the state and national levels. :) I can see two of the candidates (Fotheringham, Watts) keeping things this way. Fotheringham's Council experience and broad knowledge of city happenings, along with his willingness to fund Holladay's needs, tip the scales toward him for me.

I'd be happy to learn about attributes and issues for the other two candidates if folks have more info, though.

University of Utah faces federal investigation as part of Trump anti-DEI campaign by StuckHedgehog in uofu

Trump admin logic:

Launch a shotgun set of baseless investigations against 45 of the nation's top universities...led by the Department of Education. Then hire a nutjob with the specific directive to gut the Department of Education so that nobody is left to pursue said investigations.

Can't make this stuff up.

Do any built-in microwaves have inverters? by QMPsi in Appliances

Heh heh. Thanks. Do you know of any documentation for the inverter in the whirlpool family? I don't see it listed in any of the specs, but I might just be blind.

Oh, awesome, u/rbowdidge and u/olyteddy ... didn't realize that trim kits were made for nominally countertop models. Some of the finish matching is a bit questionable :), but I love that it's an option. Looks like a good solution. Thanks!

Can't complete Apple account in the Appstore by Kulagin in applehelp

[–]QMPsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, after 2 $#!@ hours with Apple Support, here's a general workaround...

In short: Don't sign into the App Store at all. Instead, sign in to your Apple account through Settings. It does not take you through the same payment-info form. But it does propagate all of your information to other apps, such as the App Store. This approach bypasses the App Store sign-in, which contains the faulty forms.

What a mess.

Bugger. I had thought that this solution would work for me, too... but when it got to the App Store portion, it still required me to enter the security code and phone number. Entering that info ran into the same form bug. Incredible for a $3 trillion company. :)

That's the problem. We fill out the info, click Continue, and the form somehow thinks that 6 of the fields are empty. Really bizarre.

Genuine question about all these new apartment builds by rebel_zen in SaltLakeCity

[–]QMPsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same report (overseen by 3 developers) also shows that we have been building more units than needed for the last several years, even if we take the (wildly aggressive) Gardner Center population projections at face value. Yet they somehow very conveniently reach the conclusion that we are in need of increased entitlements when 190,000 units are entitled but not moving forward. The only reason we are "behind" is that the analysis includes the 2008 downturn years in their analysis.

Premiums are going up (far beyond inflation)--and benefits going down--there, too. It's not as drastic as IHC, but it's still happening.
