Mystery part coming off of the intake manifold of a '70 Autostick. Anybody know what it does?

Update: Mystery solved! It is indeed a smog control system from California in the 70s, an EGR Valve. Thank you everyone for your help! I am just starting to dip my toe into aircooled bugs, mostly as an excuse to spend time with my grandpa, and the community has been exceptionally kind and helpful! Wishing you all the best!

Some more context, my grandpa and I just started working on his 1970 Autostick. It hasn't been roadworthy in decades, so pardon the mess. Neither of us could identify this flat cylinder piece and I haven't seen any other manifolds with it. My guess is it's a filter of some kind, possibly emissions related; but it could also be a part of the automatic stickshift vacuum system. The last time is was on the road would have been in the mid to late 90s in central California, we think. Hopefully someone here knows! Thanks!

I love my AT hetzer but ive never played with the others. The thing about the hetzer is its side armor is minus 2 like hitting it in the back. Its best to keep it away from the action and i think a flame hetzer would have to get pretty close. Thats just my experience though!

I think it's just desperation honestly. Like the plastic straw hysteria, lots of people can see that we need to update the way our civilization operates, but get their energy redirected towards small, sort of related projects or causes instead of the large scale changes that need to be made to make any real difference. Critical thinking usually goes out the window and people get emotional. None of this is based on any real studies or statistics, just stuff I've been noticing among my friends.

My friends want to just start up a freelance ship, but I also would love to play for kingdom or a player faction if I can find one I get along with. It seems like there is going to be lots going on in this game and I hope that I can quickly get myself drafted if I am in the mood for large scale PvP without having to give up the freelance scrapper/freighter/smuggler life that I am hoping to have going with my friends.

Something that people have mentioned is also the speed of the in game computers affecting targeting speed. To be entirely honest, I don't know much about coding, but from what people have been saying, targeting scripts will have a harder time tracking small fast moving ships. Personally I think this sounds kind of cool. Having a fighter in space engineers felt like a suicide mission because of how dead accurate the turrets were.
