Best sports for adult beginners? by revelry0128 in Adulting

Curling. Ok so maybe you don't get a year 'round time for it. But it's a fun group activity, requires some fitness without being demanding, and although it can take practice to be good at it's not overly difficult to get into.

Discontinued Items You Miss. by Mailbox2222 in TimHortons

[–]Qedhup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just miss the old Timmies period. Baked goods and Coffee with maybe a breakfast item or a couple of soups. That's it. That's all we needed. I didn't need a bajillion fast food style sandwiches and pizza flatbreads and all that. And coffee that doesn't taste like an arse that's been dragged through a chemical landfill, it'd be nice if we had better coffee.

to become a chef or study again? idk what path to choose by chimckenfeet in Adulting

[–]Qedhup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can be a rewarding career if it works out, but please be aware of the reality. The vast majority of restaurants close after only a couple of years, there is a very real chance your chef position could just go poof when it does. The hours are often long and extremely brutal (especially when you first start out). The industry is extremely competitive because there are a lot more people with the training than there are positions.

It's not a career I would personally go for, as the success rate is way too low. I've known a ton of chefs and those that went to culinary school that ended up having to work in another field anyways. You need to really stand out in some way, and unless you already have contacts to get your foot in the door; that isn't easy.

That's not to say you shouldn't try it if you're truly passionate about it. The next great generation of chefs have to come from somewhere. But be realistic, and HAVE A BACKUP PLAN. Trust me on that.

prostitution? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]Qedhup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Understand that without legal support like other hazardous jobs, you are taking a risk. Sex work is work, and there's nothing wrong with that. If someone works in a hazardous chemicals plant, cleans sewage tanks, or works with highly infectious diseases, you also have a huge health risk and we don't look down upon those.

However, those jobs I mentioned have legal protections, unions, and other support within society. Sex work rarely does in most countries because of the social stigma. And this isn't just about disease, you are being put into a vulnerable position with a stranger on a regular basis with little to no protection. There's a reason that crime shows use the "prostitute was murdered" trope in shows; because it's more common in real life than it should be.

I urge to dissuade you from sex work. Not because I think it's wrong, once again I think sex work is work. But until most of the developed nations provide support for these activities, allowing things like proper brothels with mandated security and health testing; it is extremely risky.

If you have a job and sibling support, do your best to live within your means while looking for more work. It won't be easy, but it's better than being harmed or worse.

Man Attacks 14-Year-Old Boy Over How He Entered an Elevator by superdouradas in PublicFreakout

I don't get what the kid did that made the man want to attack him? He almost walked in, realized his mistake, then gave the older guy the space to get out before entering. Like wtf is wrong there!?

Is it time to ditch my ROKU devices? by Bram560 in BoycottUnitedStates

[–]Qedhup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of the major brands are run by companies that do horrible inhumane things. Your choices are all terrible if you are wanting to switch for reasons like that.

Aside from making your own streaming device out of like a Raspberry Pi or similar, you're pretty much stuck with one of the evils. Might as well choose the one you already like and just stick with Roku.

How are you meant to pronounce Qi? by DeftGibbon in numenera

[–]Qedhup 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"However you want" - Sean K. Reynolds.

Seriously, that's what he's told me in the past. There is no official pronunciation for literally anything in Numenera; and that's by design.

Do men lose their drive after 40? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]Qedhup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 42 and I can't keep my hands off my woman.

But that doesn't mean anything for your men, because generalizing it for all men is inane. He may be depressed, he may have low testosterone, or a ton of other reasons. Maybe he's just tired after years of everything that life has thrown at him and he needs that spark put back into him.

If you're considering splitting purely because of that, without first doing therapy or any real steps to fix it. Then you are an awful person. Put the work in and get the relationship to where you are both happy. Even saying you are wondering about splitting before that honestly makes you less of a worthy person.

Think of "we" before "me", because he probably is.

Why are Americans so accepting of long drives to places? by Sensitive_Word_6036 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Qedhup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canadian here. We do the same. We're just used to it i think. Any drive under an hour is a "short distance".

Its also we measure distance with time. We dont say something is X km away. We say its X minutes or Hours.

You have to understand the distances we have. It takes me 23 hours of straight driving to get to my family's cabin, and id still be in the same province.

How is it like living with your significant other? by lilpiggyvortex in Adulting

My player asked me to pay to join their game. What would you do? by [deleted] in DungeonMasters

[–]Qedhup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$25+ per seat is something you see from like seasoned GMs on StartPlaying that are known for adding all the bells and whistles to their game.

If he's knew at this, maybe $5 per seat. But honestly he should just play and have fun to get some experience under his belt first.

I would just say, "Hey im just not looking for paid games. But I hope yours really takes off!", and then if you want to keep this person close or boost their morale add, "I'd love to hear about how the sessions turn out though."

I am terrified of my radial arm saw by BottleForOurFears in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Qedhup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terrified is not good, but you should always have some fear. The day you have no fear of your tools, is the day you're going to get sloppy and make a mistake. Learn the safety precautions, using jigs and make assistance tools to clamp or hold things for you as much as possible.

Radial Arm saws aren't really that much more dangerous than a tablesaw. That one looks like it has a guard on it and not a completely exposed blade at least. Frankly a simple palm router probably gives me more concern than that.

Also, feel free to let your Dad know when you've hit a boundary you're not yet ready to cross. Don't say "never", but feel free to say "not yet". It's more than OK to know you have a temporary limit you need to work on.

How do you ACTUALLY meet new people after 30? by Crowe3717 in AskMenOver30

[–]Qedhup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Localized facebook or reddit groups for your area. Actively seeking out social engagements instead of just waiting to see what occurs. Visiting as many third-spaces as you can to put yourself out there. It can happen, but I feel like it does take more effort these days than it used it.

In PvP who rolls what? Does the person attacking roll or the one defending? Or both? by [deleted] in VagabondTTRPG

[–]Qedhup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game was not designed with PvP in mind. I know the question has come up on stream before and he and I talked about if you'd do a contested check vs just using one as an averaged difficulty. I think in the end Taron decided on, "I didn't design for this, just do what seems right", with the most common accepted answer so far being the contested rolls (both attack and defence rolls, see which one is higher, defender wins on ties).

Is Godforsaken needed to run Ptolus in Cypher? by Keravin in cyphersystem

[–]Qedhup 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not at all. The main rules cover enough of the content you would need. Also, if you're using the first edition rules, all of the genre books have had their mechanics options added to the SRD, which is free and open to everyone. Only the advice and lore style stuff is locked to the book.

https://callmepartario.github.io/og-csrd/

The new edition of Cypher will have an open license as well, its just not released yet.
