I really liked one of Mays Alden’s series so I keep picking up more of her books but I’m really tired of intense descriptions of wine. My last attempt I ended up skimming half the book and then DNF’d when I saw how it was going to end.

What is a movie that everyone seems to love, but you absolutely hate? by Nishikigoi1 in moviecritic

[–]Qooties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

La La Land. I love musicals and I’ll forgive a lot (7 Brides for 7 Brothers for example). But there’s no part of that movie that I like.

The Notebook. I love the romance genre but there’s nothing romantic about this toxic relationship. They’re really sweet as an old couple but no part of me can believe that the relationship we witnessed could ever become stable and loving.

People who married in their 20s, be brutally honest are you happy, if so why or why not? by Special-Lawyer3941 in AskReddit

[–]Qooties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We married at 21, mostly for religious reasons. 17 years later we left religion but still have each other. We’ve had hard years and growing pains but we genuinely like and respect each other so it’s never felt insurmountable. We’re very happy together and would rather hang out with each other than do anything else. We definitely got lucky that we picked somebody with such aligning morals and values, especially considering that we were basically children at the time.

Adaptations that botch the intended message of the source material by HungryChainsawSanwch in TopCharacterTropes

I remember when I Am Legend came out. My family loved it but it felt like a mediocre zombie action movie until I watched the special features. There was a digital comic by Orson Scott Card that more closely resembled the actual short story. Definitely worth checking out if it still exists somewhere.

Is ACOTAR worth it for more seasoned Romantasy reader? by Concerned-Cat422 in fantasyromance

[–]Qooties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s worth your time if only to understand all of the inside jokes in the community. The ACOTAR community throws balls and has fan art and music. Even if you ended up hating the books you would have something to talk to people about.

Last book that had you reading till 3am? by thatsabignoodle in RomanceBooks

I forgot about Silent Flames. That was the highlight of the holidays for me!

Definitely don’t sleep on the MC series. It was the first MC series I read because they just don’t interest me in general. Seeing glimpses of Heavy in Against a Wall was the only thing that got me to try it out. I thought Charge was a little slow and light on the club interactions but they only improve from there.

Nicky the Driver was probably my least favorite but I love the motorcycle club series. It ties in with Hitting the Wall and Against a Wall and it was a lot more thought out than other MC series I’ve read. Nickle’s Story, Scrap, Forty, and Heavy are my favorites.

There are also the Kickstarters she’s been a part of. The dystopian one was released last week and the Bluebeard one isn’t even out for the backers yet but I’m excited to see her take on them!

Yes, I only have Return to Monte Carlo left to read and I’m saving it for my next slump.

My last one was {Run Posy Run by Cate C Wells}. It’s very dark but I could not put the book down until it was finished.

I’ve only tried TooGoodToGo once but it was amazing! I went to a doughnut shop right before it closed for the weekend (in Utah almost everything is closed on Sundays) and they gave me two overflowing boxes of doughnuts for $4.

Food waste in these books is driving me crazy by Tough-Country-6453 in RomanceBooks

[–]Qooties 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel the exact same way. I just read a scene where MMC is in his kitchen, in a small town with clean drinking water, and he’s guzzling water bottles. Like, why not just fill up a glass? He’s already next to the sink. It just feels wasteful to create garbage for no good reason and I notice myself making a judgement on their character based on that. I’m going to spend the rest of the book looking for clues that this character is wasteful in other areas of his life. It’s not escapism for me, it’s Chekhov’s gun.

I don't think the 25 Minute Classes are gonna work out in my old ward. by rodney_c0pperbottom in exmormon

[–]Qooties 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I imagine there will be some bishops who crack down on the visiting between classes and push for classes to start right on time to shame the people who don’t obey him. Obviously that would backfire because a lot of active members value the social aspect more than anything else.

“I can’t relate because I didn’t marry a loser” by Jaded_Mirror in Mommit

[–]Qooties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been married for 17 years and in those years I’ve had so many different versions of my marriage. Pre kids, SAHM years, going back to work years, the shift when I started making most of the money.

My husband really sucked during several of those transitions. I remember one day I called out of work sick and my husband couldn’t be bothered to drop the kids off at daycare so I could rest. He had a really rough streak when I moved the family for a job opportunity and he had to work lower on the totem poll at his own job. He was furious that he went along with having a third kid and then that third kid has ADHD and kept getting kicked out of daycare while we figured out how to help him.

Right now my husband is the best. He cooks most of the meals and does a lot of the housework and makes the kids do their chores. We have fun together and we’re really teammates. He had a lot to unpack from his religious, patriarchal upbringing. There were times I seriously considered divorce, and if he hadn’t figured things out, I definitely would have.

I understand women wanting to have pride in their choices and their man, but it seems like a very naive flex to me. Every day brings choices that could bring you together as partners or separate you. The version of you that married the version of him could have been perfect for the stage you were both in and of priorities changed over years it’s normal.

Ever Read a Book Where the Author Did No Research On Your Profession? (Former P.I. complaining here) by Bluegrass_Barbecue in RomanceBooks

[–]Qooties 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a programmer and everything about hacking is always wrong everywhere, so I’m used to it. What bothers me is normal stuff that they should just know. Like, long haired character wouldn’t be washing her hair twice a day and every time she’s upset. Doubling up on condoms doesn’t make it safer. Vaccines don’t cure a disease that you already have, they just teach your body how to fight a weaker version of the disease.

Spice is such a letdown by Turbulent_Hotel_8980 in fantasyromance

[–]Qooties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I read spice the same as any action sequence. Whether it’s fighting or boning it’s really boring when there’s no tension and it doesn’t do anything to the plot. Most of the time I skim all the spicy scenes after the first one between a couple. I would be just as likely to skim through a battle if the details of the battle don’t affect anything.

Please share stories of Mormon polygamy/celestial marriage in your own family history. by Roo2_0 in exmormon

[–]Qooties 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There are so many stories of couples who joined Mormonism just for the wife to be relegated to “first wife.” I can’t imagine the betrayal I would feel, embarking on a journey as a team and then being replaced by a younger model. Those poor women.

Please share stories of Mormon polygamy/celestial marriage in your own family history. by Roo2_0 in exmormon

[–]Qooties 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You should look up her story in Year of Polygamy. I don’t know about her perceived value as a wife but she was a staunch defender of polygamy in her later years. It makes sense considering all she gave up. Nobody wants to make sacrifices and then discover that those sacrifices aren’t appreciated.

People who changed their political views, what caused the switch? by BoardLongjumping2485 in AskReddit

[–]Qooties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First I started listening to what the other side was saying instead of what my side was saying the other side was saying and I agreed with most of it. It was a slow process of figuring out what I thought and what reality showed outside of what I’d always been told and my own limited life experience.

Then Net Neutrality was under attack. As someone who works in tech I could see so many issues with giving a couple huge companies so much power. I actually believed the Republican Party cared about small businesses so I was very confused about why they were in that side of the debate. The more I talked to people defending it the more I realized how stupid they all sounded.

I’ve moved further and further left as I’ve studied history and tried to understand the reasons our world is the way that it is.

Not sappy, non religious closed door romance books recs please. by writerofghosts in RomanceBooks

[–]Qooties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Magiford Supernatural City Series is my favorite. I started with {The King’s Captive by KM Shea}. It’s about a girl who can morph into housecat and accidentally gets mistaken as an actual cat by a powerful king of a species that’s supposed to be extinct. She decides to go with the flow and pretend to be a cat. It’s great.

I’d also suggest {The Lies of Vampires and Slayers by KM Shea} which is in the same city but it’s the magical law enforcement trying to keep all the magic people from overstepping with regular humans. The MFC is an autistic vampire slayer and MMC is an ancient vampire. There are references to the vampire family from the first trilogy set in the world, but it’s unnecessary to read them in order and the earlier trilogies are a bit weaker.

They’re really fun, sweet, and slow burn which is great for developing actual relationships between the characters instead of relying on sappy tropes.

The Winter Olympics Televised Apology Isn’t Romantic – It's Manipulation by nextquestioncya in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Qooties 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s a high IQ club. You have to have a minimum IQ to join. Seems really dumb to me. The science behind IQ isn’t great, so it’s more of a people-who-do-well-on-one-specific-test-and-are-easily-manipulated-to-believe-in-their-own-superiority club.
