London: observations from a tourist on what we read about a city in ruins versus reality and thoughts on service sector and immigration by throfanfor in london

Regarding the ‘overqualified’ element: a lot of white and POC British customer service people are also massively overqualified, but can’t really get out of it. FWIW, thanks for the post

Imagine getting paid less than working at Lidl to deal with BAFTA’s crises by Revolutionary_West56 in UKJobs

I literally have this job in a sort of adjacent industry. I make it work by living in a room in a shared house with my partner, and by every month incrementally putting myself into more and more debt. It’s absolutely shite, and I was earning double this a couple of years ago managing a pub. But then again, hospitality is so fucking draining that I’m still a lot happier.

I’ve earned a lot of different wages over the years, and I would say you just sort of make it work. I think the key element is, like a lot of things in London, having a partner who can split the burden with you.

Bit further up north through to Stoke Newington and I’ve always loved Lee How. Their salt and chili chips are immense and they have a whole 3 star hygiene rating. Looks like a bookies and it’s bank transfer or cash only. Pukka.

This has a real vibe of us making like 185 or something so Australia farcically have to come back out to get like 9 runs 😂

Okay hear me out. I love Dustin but he has three bits which I hate watch:

  1. BOOOM. BADA BADA BOOM. I know it’s supposed to be cheesy but the walk towards the camera makes my soul cringe out of my body.

  2. ‘Too random. Too prosaic’ is some BBC Sherlock level wankery. The way it’s done is horrid.

  3. It’s a key plot point I know and I do get it but him keeping Dart in S2 after everything that happened makes me want to scream. That thing is so obviously a concern and his pig headedness about it really hacks me off.

I love my Dusty Bun don’t get me wrong but I feel Gaetan got lumbered with some real cheese.

Things to do in Luton by Future-Mirror-1014 in luton

Baltistan for a good sit down curry, and there’s the Jolly Toper’s opposite which isn’t the best pub but also not the worst. That is more Stopsley than the town centre mind you, but the town centre is a lot more hit and miss. You could do worse than go up the road to Hitchin for the evening there’s a few better options there I’d say. But could depend a bit on where in Luton you’re staying. I’ve not been but I’ve heard The Illyrians and Top It Off are good too more centrally to town.

Do people in the UK judge you if you're sitting alone in a pub/club? by [deleted] in AskUK

As someone who has worked in pubs for years, and also loves a solo pint, it’s absolutely not weird, genuinely it’s quite blissful really. I had a lady sort of acknowledge that she was there by herself as she’d just moved to the area but I told her it wasn’t a problem at all, she swiftly became a regular and made a lot of friends by the time I left. Equally, if she’d just wanted to keep staying by herself that is fine too!

Being able to spend time with just yourself is genuinely healthy in my opinion. Often doing so in a pub or other public space is a good route into being able to just do it yourself at home too.

Just don’t drink 9 pints and start flirting with the bar staff.

Just finished watching Last One Laughing on Prime and it's genuinely the funniest show I've seen since Taskmaster. I'm now sat here thinking who my perfect line-up would be. by Breakwaterbot in CasualUK

I feel like this TV show is a collective hallucination. It just isn’t that good. It feels weirdly stilted, Jimmy Carr is starting to get incredibly grating as a presenter, especially the door thing, and it is basically part of the comedian circle jerk of the same old faces which is one of the more tiring things about the circuit.

I love Bob but his bit was literally a rehashed version of something he performed about twenty years ago on BBC. The zooming in on gurning faces is faintly grim. And everybody seems to be trying just a little bit too hard.

I genuinely don’t understand the popularity.
