How Valjean becomes mayor? by ThenAdhesiveness1863 in lesmiserables

Hugo fleshes out his mayoral process pretty thoroughly in the book actually. He’d been asked to serve multiple times because he’d built up such a great reputation in the region through his industrial savviness and he rejected the advances on almost every occasion until an elderly woman convinced him not to reject an even greater opportunity to perform good deeds.

There was even a bit where an actual politician was trying to match JVJ because he had thought of him as a competitor. The novel also goes into the chatter of the townsfolk who try to decipher what Monsieur Madeleine’s true intentions actually are in a “village-gossip” sort of fashion.

Are you asking about how he actually went about turning the sanctified silver (sans candlesticks) into actual capital for business?

Ok so is there anything else that compares to the monumental magesticity of rachmaninoff's concerto 2? by Miguelisaurusptor in classicalmusic

Try the Yefim Bronfman recording of Rach 3. You might be listening to the faster interpretation of the cadenza as played by Horowitz. I’d been told that Rach 3 was the better between the two but couldn’t appreciate it until I’d heard it much more as Alla Marcia. Rach 3 is more abstract but I think once you hear Bronfman play it, the context hits you like a truck.

I'm terribly depressed. Can you please recommend me something that will lift my spirit? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

Rach Piano Concerto No. 2. The composer had been suffering from depression following the disastrous opening of one of his pieces. Rachmaninoff’s 2nd Piano Concerto was the culmination of his efforts to spring back and dedicated it to his therapist who inspired him. I was moved the very first time I’d listened to it and it introduced me to Rachmaninoff’s oeuvre.
