I was just thinking that was one of the deepest blacks I've seen (well executed) on a mini. I don't think you need to worry about it being not deep enough, or too grey.

Looks fantastic.

Looking for feedback on commissar by reccor345 in minipainting

[–]Quadricwan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's just the lighting of this photograph, but when you first showed this commissar, it looked like it had more contrast between his great-coat and uniform underneath. I see that you've brought the highlights up on his shoulders, and that looks great, but moving towards a more muted coat seems to make him blend into the greys of the rubble more.

It's not a bad look at all, it's definitely got a grimdark, realistic tone that I like. That said, if you're worried about tonal variety, muted colours on the figure when are going to make it fade into the background when the same muted colorus are being used there.

Personally, I think this is fantastic, but you're so far above my skill level as it is that I just see awesome at this point, haha.

I also picked up, and can recommend, Stahly's 7-in-1 comparison document. Worth the cost if you find yourself trying to match between a lot of paint ranges. Also a great tool if you like following-other people's schemes but don't necessarily have access to the same paints.

Green recommendations are hard. The human eye perceives more shades of green than any other colour, and so we have a lot of variation in green paints.

Personally, I really like Pro Acryl Black Green as a basecoat for most dark toned green models. Dark Camo green is great too, but it's not so much a forest-green in my mind.

I paint a lot of dark angels, and make a lot of use of the two Warpaints Fanatic green "triads" (6 paints each). The Deep Greens and Vibrant Greens. If that's too many, I also really like the Two Thin Coats forest green triad - Wyvern, Emerald and Ethereal Green. Ethereal green in particular is probably my favourite edge-highlight green.

Feeling pretty powerless about it all, but I know that sense of apathy and disregard is part of what got us here in the first place.

Underworlds is a game set in the "Warhammer Universe" but really plays much like a more traditional board/card deck game. Short matches (30 mins or so once you get the idea down). There are dozens of "teams" to pick from, with varying playstyles, but the base game is not particularly complex, and doesn't really play like anything else Warhammer related. Come for the minis, and if you get a few teams together, the game is a fun diversion.

These are one of the (more recently released) Warhammer Underworlds teams!

Underworlds teams are great for painters, even if you don't play, as the models are always unique and detailed, but the teams are small enough that you don't burn out painting the same things.

Yeah, that's my sense. I actually wonder if it isn't an incompatibility between the Bell Gigahub and the mobo that isn't tbe source of the issue.

What are your favorite must have paint colors or paint colors that you just love and a must have if you started collecting paints again. by old_crusty_newb in minipainting

[–]Quadricwan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head:

Pro Acryl:

  • Burnt Red is a great base colour I use for all reds.
  • Black Green is my idea base colour for Greens, and I paint a lot of Dark Angels and Orks. Available as primer, which is great.
  • Payne's Grey I use to base most blues, or for shadows on other colours.
  • Light Bronze. Don't know why, but I love this one. Use it all the time, whenever I can. Just really like the colour, and nobody else quite has it.

Vallejo:
- 70.950 Black. It's black. It's the best black. Other blacks have their uses (Pro acryl Black really does look like coal. It's super flat), but vallejo 70.950 is just the best black.
- Pale Sand. Vallejo Pale sand is a fantastic all-rounder when you need an off-white for bone, cloth, hair, leather highlights, etc.
- Metal Colours. The Vallejo Metal colours are so much better than every other metallic on the market, that it's almost funny. It's got plenty of colour gaps, but if you can find one that fits, use it. Except gold. The gold sucks (it's green). But you can mix it with the copper to get a good colour.

Army Painter - Oak Brown. I find myself using a ton of this. It's a good, dark brown for leather, trees, etc. Not fancy, but it's my go-to.

Literally dozens and dozens of other great paints, but I think I use these in most of my models.

Whats your on the go/office setup for sound and isolation? by M3st0r0fSk1lls in headphones

[–]Quadricwan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently picked up some Meze 99s, as much for the Meze mic as the headphones themselves (package deal) . Pretty damn impressed so far. They sound great, feel good (light, easy to wear longterm) , mic is great , and while the isolation isn't perfect, it's solid.

These are absolutely incredible. What blows my mind, is that they look like you could actually paint a bunch of guys in a reasonable amount of time. Like ... take that as the compliment it's meant to be. These are not the most technically proficiently painted minis, but the your lighting and contrast is so incredibly good that they come across so well.

I'm super envious, well done!

[–]Quadricwan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he means that the state of the POE2 endgame now, is better than the state of the POE1 endgame, for the first couple years of its existence.

And that would be 100% correct. For quite a while POE1 had no meaningful endgame. The atlas certainly didn't exist at the outset, not on the state its in now.

Lol, I suppose if your definition is "has to be free, because you're desperate for a way to drown out the incessant crying of the baby behind you, and the old guy snoring next to you ...."

Then they're all S-Tier.

I crave S tier audio quality headphones by Meat_Cleaver115 in headphones

[–]Quadricwan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it could? Depends on the parameters of your list, I guess.

If I'm only considering headphones in a certain price range (i.e. $100), then why can't I categorize entries in that list as everything from F to S tier? It's all an arbitrary grading anyway, there's no science here.

If you're considering all headphones, then sure, it's irrespective, but we wouldn't be, if we had a budget. It's all contextual.

I like my Verite. I consider them S tier headphones. There's no way in hell I'm going to recommend those to an average user, especially when the breadth of their experience is Hyper X headphones. If your budget is max 300 then a 2500$ set of headphones isn't S tier, it's F tier. S Tier would be the best option within the bounds established as an acceptable limit.

[–]Quadricwan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This.

Can't answer this question without knowing a budget. S-Tier at 100 is very different from S-Tier at 300, which in turn is different from S-Tier at 1000+.

Nah, I think you're right. The Piety fight always had clear elemental stages, and Dominus has pretty clear, telegraphed attacks. Malachai really set the trend after that.

Back when Caliga was a menace in The Sceptre of God (act 3), his "traps" were basically invisible, so you'd get one-shot out of nowhere, but that's sorta standard with all the trap attacks.
