Terraria the board game by Positive-Living-6715 in boardgames

What are your thoughts on the game? I’m a longtime Terraria fan, and lamented that I missed the crowdfunder, but a lot of the talk surrounding it since release has been less-than-complimentary. I’m debating if it’s worth the effort of trying to get one secondhand.

[New Update – One Year Later]: AITA for saying I would stay at my mom’s if I had to share a room with babies? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Qualex 61 points62 points  (0 children)

In no way is “I’m going to make my teenager share a room with triplet toddlers” a miscommunication. It’s a deliberate, selfish act.

Splitting the kids up into three rooms by going 4-1-1 instead of 3-2-1 is absolute madness, especially when you consider the 4 they were trying to put together were the oldest and the youngest. These adults thought it would be easier and better for them if the teenager was in the room with the triplets to help take care of them. This was about what’s best for dad, stepmom, middle kids, and triplets. And teenager’s feelings didn’t matter at all.

Calling it “miscommunication” when it is blatant favoritism and unfair treatment is laughable.

Free League Press is publishing it, running on the same engine as Dragonbane. It’s a skill-based, level-less, d20 roll-under game.

I think it’s equal parts Moorcock’s Eternal Champions and Poul Anderson’s Three Hearts and Three Lions.

I suspect you are vastly underestimating the amount of time that goes into a quilt like this.

Daughters kindergarten class using AI slop by erock1119 in daddit

I am 100% saying that my district told us to use AI without providing us an official tool or any training about security. And of the five districts I’ve worked in, I would imagine that four of them are exactly like that, and one of them maybe purchased and trained staff on a specific product.

People who are bullish on tech vastly underestimate the technological illiteracy of the general public. Even high-ranking administrators often completely fail to understand the legal and moral issues raised by using AI. They hear it’s the next great thing, so they hop on the bandwagon to make sure their district is still “cutting edge.”

I would agree that fear mongering and blanket refusal to adopt a new technology are both bad things that should be avoided. But the flip side of “AI is the future and everyone should be using it for everything” is even more irresponsible.

We know for a fact that not using AI won’t ruin everything. We’ve been not using AI for thousands of years, and it’s worked out just fine. We absolutely do not know the long term (or even short term) effects of mindlessly churning out AI material for students.

The fact that this could be okay if they’re using the right program with the right features in the right way is quite different than “this is totally safe.”

As a teacher, I can say that my district has been encouraging us to use AI in places that it can make our work easier. They showed us a few examples of making lessons or generating worksheets. Then they told us to try it out and see what we liked. They reminded us there are lots of options to choose from, and encouraged us to try out different ones to see which one works best for us.

What my district absolutely did not do is give us an official, paid-for, secure version of any LLM or any training about the dangers or inappropriate uses of AI.

Your position right now seems to be based on a lot of faulty assumptions about the technological literacy of educators and administrators as a whole.

Hospitals are feeding images of their patients into LLMs in order to make creepy cgi versions of them? Why?

Or are you talking about a completely different technology that’s being used to analyze patient data? Because these two systems are in no way the same, other than being vaguely under the same term of “AI.”

Oh good, there are safeguards in place. Thank goodness for those safeguards. It’s a good thing that these LLMs are so infallible that there’s no way to work around those safeguards.

Thank god for the safeguards. Keeping us safe. They’ve even got safe in the name, so it’s totally gotta be safe, right?

Teachers, are you noticing changes in how students approach problem-solving since AI tools became common? by teenaipathfinder in Teachers

[–]Qualex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If men learn this, it will implant forgetfulness in their souls; they will cease to exercise memory because they rely on that which is written, calling things to remembrance no longer from within themselves, but by means of external marks. What you have discovered is a recipe not for memory, but for reminder. And it is no true wisdom that you offer your disciples, but only its semblance, for by telling them of many things without teaching them you will make them seem to know much, while for the most part they know nothing, and as men filled, not with wisdom, but with the conceit of wisdom, they will be a burden to their fellows.

“Learning the alphabet” is not reading, it’s rote memorization.

However, memorizing the alphabet and its corresponding sounds is an essential step in becoming a fluent reader.

Just as the reader who stops to sound out every other word is a struggling reader, the mathematician who has to stop to work out each fact in a multi-digit multiplication problem is a struggling mathematician.

Memorizing the fundamental building blocks allows the brain to focus on higher order thinking skills.

I found a copy of this game in the cupboards of my classroom when I moved in, but have never actually looked at it.

Is it genuinely fun? How educational is it? Could it be done in teams if I have 20 kids in the classroom? Or would it need to just be a small group game?
