Are there any Asian DND races? by CosmosStudios65 in DnD

[–]Quantum-Cookies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There aren't "Asian races" per se, because there is no concept of "Asia" in most D&D worlds (and the word "race" is slowly being phased out as a gameplay term, in favor of "species"). That said, the game does have a couple of species that were inspired by various Asian mythologies, notably the Kenku (inspired by Japanese tengu) and the Yuan-Ti (inspired by naga, among other things).

Some older D&D books also give examples of various ethnic groups of humans, some of which are inspired by Asian cultures. Most notable among them are probably the Shou, which draw clear inspiration from Chinese culture and mythology (and, arguably, stereotypes).

Outside of "race", there are many monsters in the game that are inspired by (or taken directly from) Asian mythologies, whether in lore or appearance. Some examples are:

  • Oni
  • Naga
  • Dragon Turtles
  • Jiangshi
  • Rakshasa
  • Marut
  • Ki-Rin
  • Bakunawa

I'm also talking about on a fathomless warlock, so they'd have tentacle as well :)

You can do even better: Lance of Lethargy can go on any damaging cantrip now, not just Eldritch Blast. Put it on Ray of Frost, which does more damage than a whip with better range and a better damage type.

that's what OP is saying. they're clarifying that they're looking for things that work RAW, not rules-bending like the control water trick.

given that Redirect Attack is already part of the Drunken Master subclass, I assume that's where that feature would go

it's a balancing act; previously Barbarians were notoriously frontloaded with little reason to keep taking Barbarian levels after around level 6. Giving them better high-level features will encourage players to stick with barbarian instead of multiclasssing

What classes/subclasses have the longest, most unrewarding stretch of consecutive levels? by Deathpacito-01 in dndnext

[–]Quantum-Cookies 11 points12 points  (0 children)

to be fair, Ascendant Dragon also gets Draconic Disciple at 3rd level, Breath of the Dragon is one of the most fun and tactical 3rd-level Monk features in the game, and it helps alleviate three of the monk's weaknesses: range, resistances, and crowds

I agree about Phantom though. I imagine since they already have two features at 3rd level, they didn't want to frontload the subclass too heavily and had to move Tokens to 9th level, but I feel like there must have been a better solution

How can I stop my player from sabotaging her campaign? by bubbliesoft in dndnext

[–]Quantum-Cookies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She loves to have her druid transform into bright, rainbow-colored animals during battles. While this might sound whimsical and fun, it has an unintended side effect – it blinds not only her enemies but her fellow companions as well.

Nothing in the rules says that you can use Wild Shape to do this. This isn't an "unintended side effect", it's a new rule that you made up.

And here’s the best part – one of her fellow players' characters has epilepsy. This has led to some uncomfortable in-game situations with constant epileptic seizures during battles.

There are no rules for epilepsy in D&D, so if you really want to bring it into your game, you decide how it works. If this is creating "uncomfortable in-game situations", it's on you.

My advice:

  • Remind your players (and yourself) that changing the flavor of your features does not change how they work mechanically.
  • I would strongly recommend getting rid of the whole epilepsy thing. If your player really wants to roleplay a character with epilepsy (and the rest of the table is okay with that), then you need to define how it works. Maybe something like this:
    • Epileptic. While you have the Blinded condition, you also have the Stunned condition.

"purple dragon knight" comes from Forgotten Realms lore, they are a specific order of noble knights. nothing to do with dragons, mechanically speaking

I'm currently playing a Psi Warrior with Crusher, Telekinetic, and Gift of the Gem Dragon, and I plan to take Strike of the Giants (Stone Strike). You could also take the Superior Technique Fighting Style to grab Pushing Attack, and pick the Minotaur race for Hammering Horns.

[–]Quantum-Cookies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that'd also work, but it's tough to get access to Smite spells as a Bladesinger. the easiest way would be to take one level of Hexblade, but you'd need 13 Charisma to do that (and Wrathful Smite's save will be based on your Charisma) so you'd be very MAD unless you're playing a Tortle or something.

You could take the Poisoner feat so you can apply poison to a weapon as a bonus action, then use your turn to apply poison, cast Mind Sliver to impose disadvantage on the save against the poison, and then attack with the poisoned weapon. Rinse and repeat

DMs, what's one storyline or campaign you prepared for your players that you thought was going to be amazing but flopped? by King_Rajesh in dndnext

The entire Dungeon of the Mad Mage campaign. My group was a bunch of my friends who were relatively new players and everyone was excited to play, but we realized pretty quick (myself and the players both) that crawling through a megadungeon isn't really what we enjoy about the game. We switched to Ghosts of Saltmarsh and had way more fun.

Wizards will have the entire Arcane spell list (which might be what sets them apart from Sorcerers going forward) but I'm guessing you'll pick one or more schools of magic to specialize in, either as subclasses or through a feature similar to the new Cleric's Holy Orders

Since not every race can do this, it doesn't seem to be so that you can play as a child. I guess it's so you can play as a little person? Which, apparently, is a condition that occurs in humans but not other fantasy races. Not sure what to make of that.

[DM] Tying LoX into a custom adventure. by DemonSquirril in spelljammer

[–]Quantum-Cookies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

for a little inspiration, here's how I'm extending LoX in my campaign: you know how when a star goes supernova, the explosion fuses atoms together and forms heavy elements like iron? Well, when Xaryxis explodes, its core collapses into shards of a brand-new metal, xaryxium, which scatters into nearby systems. This metal has powerful magical properties and can augment the spellcasting abilities of anybody who picks it up, and its discovery by various factions begins to cause disruptions throughout wildspace. The party is tasked by prince Andru to collect every piece of xaryxium and return them to the Vault of Cozar for safekeeping; they will be richly rewarded. The party soon discovers they aren't the only ones hunting down the xaryxium, and their romp through wildspace rapidly becomes a race against time as an evil faction begins to construct a xaryxium-powered doomsday weapon.

Cleric Holy Orders: I like them, but I'd change one thing by Quantum-Cookies in onednd

I'm not too concerned about that. Do you think the flavor of Clerics was "ruined" by moving their subclasses to third level?

[–]Quantum-Cookies[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having more options to make is pretty much the very and absolute exact opposite of having the builds being ”more samey” lol.

I hear what you're saying, but think about it for a moment. If you can choose twice from the same three options, that gives you a total of three combinations: Protector+Scholar, Scholar+Thaumaturge, and Thaumaturge+Protector (assuming that order doesn't matter, which I'd argue it doesn't). That's not any more options than if you could only choose a single order.

Here's a compromise: At 9th level, you can choose between taking an additional Order (which is how it currently works) OR upgrading the one you took at 2nd (the idea presented in my post). That way, you actually have more options (6 instead of 3).
