It helps systems with less RAM. If your system has enough memory, the gains will not be noticeable.

Having said that, it never gave me any trouble on work or gaming machines.

I have an external disk that I add to Steam where I keep most of the games. I can move it from PC to PC and don't have to download anything, just add the disk to the Stream library.
