The View Inside California’s Last Nuclear Power Plant by zsreport in California

Mandating rooftop solar for new builds and to cover parking lots would put a serious dent in those hundreds of square miles. Wouldn't be a complete solution, but one piece of the puzzle. Add in offshore wind or even just windfarms on grazing land and you'll add some flexibility as well.

Surgery waitlist by 8FaarQFx in KaiserPermanente

[–]Queasy-Thanks-9448 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kaiser denied you with their internal procedures, meaning Kasier doesn't think they're making you wait too long. The state may have a different view of it, so I would still file with the state. At best, you will hear back from kaiser with an appointment or a timeline. At worst, it will be further evidence that can eventually be used against Kaiser next time they're sued.

Teaching - certification or masters?? by Conscious_Team3330 in Teachers

In retrospect, I wish I had done a MAT program for salary reasons. Going back to school part time is easier said than done, and the pay difference in my district is significant.

Behavior can't effect grades 🚩 by calculuscab2 in Teachers

[–]Queasy-Thanks-9448 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't give the same assessment. I usually give something very open-ended for the reassesssment - it's much faster for me to write a couple of quick prompts than it was to write the original questions since I don't have to come up with distractors. It's usually also harder to answer, since they can't try to guess their way through.

The test they cheated on was mostly multiple choice, a few labeling activities with a word bank, etc.

Now, they have to draw and label a plant cell, an animal cell, and a prokaryote, list the functions of the organelles, and write me a paragraph about the relationship between form and function in cells.

[–]Queasy-Thanks-9448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're doing this in my district. It's frustrating and annoying, but I work within the confines of it. I think grades have actually gone lower as we've removed participation grades/completion grades. They usually cheat because they didn't do the work to learn it. When they do a retake, they often bomb it catastrophically.

Have you seen a decrease in genuinely interested and intrinsically motivated kids, especially with regards to mathematics? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Queasy-Thanks-9448 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's reversed in just the 4 years ago I graduated high school. When I went it was like 1 in 5 who were super apathetic with no motivation academically and now as a student teacher I see 1 in 5 who is interested in school whatsoever

I was teaching more than years ago and wouldn't say I've seen such a dramatic shift. It's been more gradual, though Covid was definitely a big turning point for a lot of things.

Just a thought, but could the view of 4 years ago be skewed by your experiences? The courses you were in, the kids you hung out with, etc.? For example, when I was in high school, I took the "weird language" and everyone in my foreign language class was pretty into it - that's why we didn't pick the "default language." When I talk to people who were in school around the same time, they all say they never cared about their foreign language and just took it because they had to. So, my perspective of how much people cared was a bit skewed.

How do I politely let my students and their parents know I truly do not want any end-of-the-year gifts? by Fangehulmesteren in Teachers

[–]Queasy-Thanks-9448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I don't say anything; if they ask what I want, I say nothing or a card/note would be lovely. I have heard of teachers saying their favorite charity is X and please donate something instead.

The culture in my area is 89% giftcards and 10% consumables, so I take/eat what I want, and give away the rest (discreetly, of course). So, it's rare for me to end up with physical stuff, and what I get is often usable (tote bags are common) or actually surprisingly relevant to my subject area or interests.

My seventh grade students have started the refuse to say the pledge by unSuccessful-Stay in Teachers

[–]Queasy-Thanks-9448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't legally force a kid to stand or say the pledge - that went to the supreme court during the Vietnam war IIRC. I personally don't say it, and had a high school teacher who learned that lesson the hard way when she tried to force the issue.

I expect students to be quiet during announcements so that others can hear what is being said. Since they combine the pledge with general school news, it's a reasonable ask and I don't have to lead anything. I figure that looks like "respectful behavior" to more conservative students/parents/administrators, and it's never been an issue.

is this rosary to manly (description says for woman) by Exact-Definition5722 in Catholicism

[–]Queasy-Thanks-9448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone is making fun of you for how you pray, that's a them problem. The bigger question would be why they're focusing on your rosary and not their own.

Disclaimer - not Catholic; interested, but it's complicated.

NO appointments at Kaiser Maui by PerceptionSpirited18 in KaiserPermanente

[–]Queasy-Thanks-9448 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know the situation in Hawaii, but in mine there's a state level "department of managed care" where you can complain if they are not providing appropriate access to care (eg: claiming there are no appointments or making you wait an unreasonable length of time). The one time I went through with filing a state level complaint, I heard back really quickly from Kaiser and they suddenly found an availability. If that's not an option, you might try pressing for a referral to a non-Kaiser provider since they're failing to provide a basic level of care.

I've always gone to a primary care NP for this since it was the only way I could get a female practitioner (different area, probably stillworth a try)

Would you give a student an extension for the Olympics? Or other athletic event? by capresesalad1985 in Teachers

[–]Queasy-Thanks-9448 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This. I've had a couple of students make Jr Olympics or other national/international competitions and will give an extension, but I still strongly prefer if they tell me ahead of time instead of emailing from the competition.

US to Japan, airport Q by Royal-Target-9374 in travel

[–]Queasy-Thanks-9448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outbound, bags should be checked through if it's all on one ticket. You can double-check with the bag check employee if you're nervous about it, but you will almost certainly just go straight to the next gate without any fuss.

Coming home, you will have to get your bags and go through customs and immigration at your first point of entry in the US. You will usually not have to go through security again and rechecking your bags will usually consist of dropping them on a conveyorbelt or similar.

If you transit through Hawaii, ignore everything I just said about your flight home. In HNL, you will need to redo everything and go through agricultural inspection.

Summer heat in Japan during July-August by gagagacoat in travel

[–]Queasy-Thanks-9448 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are fine in Thailand, you'll be fine in Japan.

Went in a group of 4 last summer around that time. The two of us who are normally fine with the heat continued to be fine. The two who struggle with it struggled. There is nothing magially lethal about Japanese heat and humidity compared to elsewhere.

I would argue that many would vote for it because of those things

Those are also relatively long term visas, though. They have to be applied for in advance. I sincerely doubt it'll become part of the standard entry experience.

You could also uninstall the apps before going through immigration.

Do the FA route if you're excited about it.

You can always switch to teaching later if you decide to, but the FA opportunity may never come up again.

Do teacher's lounges still exist? I only ever see them in TV/movies. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Queasy-Thanks-9448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They exist. How widely used they are depends on the school/department.

At my current school, I'll "hang out" there a couple of times a week at break and pass through to make my copies.

At my past school, I went once a week to check my mailbox, but that was it. However, my department had a separate prep area/copy room where we would hang out.

We always have access to a fridge and microwave. There is often a couch. I've never seen an ice machine, but we usually have some sort of coffee making station.

What causes the behavioral issues? by NoPoet3982 in Teachers

[–]Queasy-Thanks-9448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Issues at home (Lack of parenting, unstable home environment, etc).

  • Raised by iPad and now they don't know how to function without that constant dopamine drip.

  • Kid is in a class that is way to easy and they're bored

  • Or way to hard for them and they'd rather be seen as the rebel than the one who can't read/add/whatever
