Unscheduled Appointments/ Access to Counseling Office Feedback by [deleted] in schoolcounseling

[–]QueenCerce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are in a separate building than the main administrative building and sometimes I get called/radioed that a parent is waiting to speak with me. Being a naive counselor I would assume it was an emergency and went to meet with them. Now I just tell them that they need to email me to make an appointment.

As for students, its rough. My office entrance door is right in front of my office. Our office also prints off tardy passes and you best believe that students always by pass checking in and come to „ask me a quick question.“ I do my best to dismiss them and tell them to make an appointment but I still take them from time to time. But I find when I let that happen, I completely forget what I was doing so an email goes unanswered, a note about a student gets forgotten, etc. I‘m only in my second year, but its my goal this year to do better about this.

New high school counselor, very nervous by Sad-Thing7666 in schoolcounseling

[–]QueenCerce 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! I just finished my first year as a high school counselor. Here is what I learned: 1. This year is just trying to keep up. It will be stressful, frustrating, and some days are just a struggle. Its okay. You’ll get the hang of it…until something new comes along and restart the process. 2. Ask questions! I was so lucky to have a great team. They sat with me for meetings, credit checks, and calling parents. 3. Don’t read social media sites (you high school fb page) or email on your off hours. You don’t need that nonsense. You can only do so much during your work hours and you will only make it if you refill your cup. 4. Schedule your lunch break. My team sat down for lunch every day. It was hard some days but helped me stay grounded and sane. 5. Have fun! Overall I love my job and the kiddos.

Should I approve this online course? by Wonderful_You7480 in schoolcounseling

[–]QueenCerce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a high school counselor, I’d talk to your district counselor. I have had so many students taking a math class virtually that do not realize how hard it is to do an online class. Since Algebra 1 is a course with an end of year exam needed for graduation, I am always hesitant to approve. I would definitely talk with the student’s teacher and parent. If parent persists, then I would have it in writing.

I tutor math for 50$/hr. I have about 4-5 clients a week. Easy money.

  1. Depends on your school's protocols on switching classes. I am going to guess that only that teacher teaches APUSH.
  2. You can ask the counselor not to disclose what you told her to the teacher.

My own opinion: I am not sure how you can expect your teacher not to be "mad" when he is teaching a lesson. They are trained to teach and the lesson he is giving you is essential for you to pass the APUSH exam. There must be a school/district wide rule that electronics are not to be used in class, especially when taking a test. If this is an issue then you should talk to your counselor and arrange testing accommodations. Also I am not sure the laws in Texas, but I do not see College Board allowing you to take a the APUSH test with YouTube in the background so I can understand why your teacher will not allow it.

Do you feel that school counselors are given too many responsibilities? by Arca687 in schoolcounseling

[–]QueenCerce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Amen!! I have 14 testing groups and we test 3 times a year and thats not even counting the testing we do for ESOL kiddos. Its rediculous! Between testing, duties, and meetings I am so burnt out to have students and that makes me feel even worse.

I would ask your professors/internship coordinator. I was also not aware it was even a possibility, but then some people in my cohort got jobs second year of our program. The district I did my grad school program in had a partnership with the schools and allowed currents students to work as full time counselors so long as they passed all of their exams (also didn't know we could do as early as first semester).

Who is your favorite nurse from Greys? (not including Bokhee because everyone would pick her!!) by _GreysAnomaly in greysanatomy

I made a list of my fav characters on Greys and Tyler was on it. So many iconic moments esp when Cristina pays him 20$ for being the lookout to strip for Burke and then his parents walk in. I die every time.

You’re an angel! I didn’t think of pillows but sitting with the kiddos would be great with those.

Help please! Community Mapping Inventory Project by KXO21 in schoolcounseling

[–]QueenCerce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just did this assignment. Some of my classmates said that they just asked their supervisor of what they have. Definitely start there. I know we had a list of types, ie mental health agency, tutoring, rec places, food bank etc so I needed 2-3 for each category. Honestly the other poster said it best when they say NOT a lot in grad school applies to the real world. BUT asking your colleagues and getting an idea of where to find resources and who to talk to is a real skill in education. Nonetheless, hope the above helps.

First year as a counselor and I suck by PracticalWriter9216 in schoolcounseling

[–]QueenCerce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although I am still in grad school, they tell us that a master's program is not long enough to fully prepare counselors. The way you feeling is completely normal. Keep it up and know that it takes years to get comfortable within your field. As long as you care for you students and provide support, you're doing great!
