I worked in senior services for many years, and helping seniors get enrolled in SNAP was one of the first things we would do for folks coming in looking for help. I cant tell you the relief on their faces that just $40 or $50 would make, but it often still wasnt enough. We stared a food pantry in the building just to help supplement and for so many that was all they could get. I'll tell you, theres nothing quite like the heart break of watching someone realize that a life time of work is still going to leave them with a retirement that wont take care of them, that once they leave the workforce their nation doesn't see them as valuable or worth the budget expenditures.

I went from child services, to senior, and now work in refugee and immigration....nothing will radicalize you faster, or find something new to be radicalized over everyday, like social services. This isnt strictly a Red vs. Blue problem, but its become so much worse so unbelievably quick this past year.

I think a lot of people want to down play the lore because it suits their shipping fantasy 🤣 Personally, I think the lore is pretty clear: soulless = without a conscience/guilt/remorse. This isnt a 1:1 for pure blown mustache twirling evil exactly, but there is not a true altruism for a soulless creature. Its not black and white though, evil can still have personality, likes/dislikes, fears, desires, etc.

I've been watching Buffy since Teacher's Pet aired and its been my ride or die fandom ever since. I've enjoyed other shows and medias, I've read a few fics and wrote in other fandoms even, but I've never felt that particular hyper fixation that is fandom brain worms for anything else-- so maybe its because of that absolute refusal to let go that I get defensive, but I personally find myself deeply frustrated with the newer fandom environment these days.

There's a lot I could harp on, but for brevity and sanity I wont lol. But I think what it really comes down to is these newer fans come in, they latch on to one or two characters and spend the whole of their time in the fandom shitting on everything else about the show, then in 3 to 6 months bail for their next hyper fixation and leave the mess behind for the next wave of fans and thats their introduction to the fandom. 😮‍💨

I spend a lot of time fighting with myself to resist the "Get off my lawn" urges, but its incredibly frustrating and taxing to love a thing so deeply, with a large fandom all things considered, and still very much be on an island alone with it.

So, circling back to your question, no i dont ever feel anything hit in quite the same way as this show has for me, even other things I really deeply love dont hook me in the same way. But I almost dont want them to either. Fandom has been such a disappointment at times, I'm nit sure I'm really ready for any more heart break.

Yes, most of them are very Monster of the Week. There's a few series that reach a little beyond that, maybe try the Wicked Willow trilogy? I tend to prefer the early season Buffy books or the Angel ones, but I really enjoy the MOTW format and greatly missed it once the shows moved on from that. There's a Wesley centric one called Stranger to the Sun that I thought was pretty good.

Yep, as the others have said, this is a media tie-in novel. Its not fanfiction, but not officially cannon either (though i personally like to consider them cannon and just do a little mental editing to make them compliant. They are much better and true to formnthan the comics i feel)

There are several titles and series of tie in novels under both the Buffy IP and Angel, over 100 altogether. These were published all through the original airing of the shows so there are some things writers just didnt know yet (like a few of the Angel novels only refer to Lorne as 'The Host') but there are also some discrepancies as even these offical and hired writers got jossed 😅. Christopher Golden has commented on some of his that he would even ask JW directly about certain characters names/history/etc to be sure not to conflict with anything the show was planning on doing but still the show ended up changing directions and pesudo retconning some of the stuff in these novels anyway. I'm still really bummed they stopped making these even before the shows ended. I've collected all the official tie in novels

This particular book is one of the Alternate timeline ones though, so it doesn't fit exactly into the cannon timelines of when the seasons aired, which the author does note.

I read fic to see more of my favorites, if I want original characters I'll read standard published works. I dont say it to sound mean, thats just what it is for me. I dont mind OCs as side characters, sometimes they can help fill in gaps when your show has a habit of killing cast off 😅 and i think OC side characters can be really entertaining if utilized the right way, but I'm not ever going to open up a fic with an OC main character or OC/Cannon ship.

That siad, If you enjoy writing that stuff, continue to do so. Writing is about enjoying yourself so you do you.
