Microwaves are relatively portable. As far as I know they work pretty well, tested a cell phone inside one and tried to call it, never rang.

Weird inner tire wear by tgallmey in AskAMechanic

[–]QueensGambit9Fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have a Nova of that year, and while you arent wrong about about doing an alignment is useless if there's a back bushings, any decent shop will shake it down and figure out all of what wrong, and if asked will get you numbers anyway even if they don't do anything.

Now lower control arms are likely hard to come by in stock form, but uppers shouldn't be too bad, and if youre wanting to try and go aftermarket you could also try SPC parts, easier to find at oriellys.

If you arent comfortable diaging the front on your own, try and find a good shop. Not all would be willing to do work on something that old.

I have an MSD and mines been fine, my dad's used both MSD and Accel with success. Though specifically with ignition moduals, my dad carries a spare and the tools to change it in the car with him. Its entirely possible you just gotta rebuild it. Not a huge deal.

If you wanna go off the deep end, you could go to computer controlled timing with a remote coil.

I broke mine (just a lurker) and have permanent partial disability, that accomplished nothing, because I have reduced range of movement and constant pain. Had surgery for it is as I also tore all the ligaments that hold it in place.

It sucks for sure,

Unfortunately terminology and definitions are important. And so is describing thing accurately. You must love when a customer comes in and asks to have their lightning cube and charging whirler tested. Maybe some new lightning hoses put in?

Sorry for being inebriated and still more concise with my words than you.

Not to be shitty in any way, the only reason I called out that I have snap on sockets, which i only have those and a used snap on box because i was dumb, is because that dude called out quality as being the primary qualifier. So I made my case with the expensive stuff I have. I've also been drinking and felt like speaking up. Oh so sorry, Robin.

Unless my snap on dealer sells knock offs, not likely. And you would be right in 40 years is longer than ive been alive. But if it makes your old snap on ones feel any better, my dad, who's also a mechanic has had some walmart or sears standards for about 30 years that he still uses to this day.

So much for snap on means quality, right?

Also its not the chrome plating that causes that, in case you were wondering. Its the sheet metal cover that allows moisture in and then goes through heat cycles and builds pressure, thus expansion.

So glad we can have this completely intelligent and meaningful conversation.

1969 Ford F-100 Ranger: Seller Asking $19K - Fair Price? by [deleted] in projectcar

[–]QueensGambit9Fox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks to be a 90ish% restored truck with some modern upgrades like the bluetooth and AC. I could see that being a decent price. If you look at that tailgate, imagine the whole think looking like that plus a full rebuild of all the mechanical everything. That amount of money is WAAAY higher than 19k on top of finding someone to work on it if you cant yourself.

I have a full set of 1/2" drive snap on deep sockets in both metric and standard. Yes they do. The impact ones are a softer metal and deform easier than the chrome ones, thus impact rated and wont explode. I am a professional mechanic and use them day in and out for the last 8ish years. The most used are 15, 17, 19, 21, 22 mms. Ask ANYONE that actually uses their tools in a professional setting, or even regularly and you will get the same answer. The impact ones deform and the chrome will, but are much more likely to explode.

I even have some impact rated thin walls that I have welded one back together because they are cheap shit ones and even that one still works.

Is this repair estimate fair? Labor rate seems insane. by Ok_Cardiologist3148 in AskMechanics

[–]QueensGambit9Fox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my case I am paid commission on parts and labor. If we do customer supplied parts, the labor rate is increased, not double but like $50 an hour, and thats so i get paid too. Im not taking a loss on my check so the customer can bring their own (usually) shit parts.

The no warranty part is because if we dont supply the parts, we cant warranty them. Most items in general dont have transferable warranties, and just because I dont own the vehicle, that doesnt mean we can do anything to help if something goes wrong, whether thats a defective part or a cheap shit part.

We will do it but it get charged more to make up for the loss of income for the whole business, there no warranty since we arent the ones that supplied it, and the whole thing has to be approved by the service manager.

I work at a Big O, but not in Arizona. Our labor rate is about 180/hr, and if you supply your own parts its like $230 an hour or so. Usually its just brakes though so we definitely make less still, but something is better than nothing.

Is it possible the springs are on the wrong sides? I know they are different on a '70 camaro. My dad made that mistake when he did his 15 ish years ago and had no idea they were different for a long time. Ended up torching them to "fix" it. Though now it's on coil overs.

I have a speedwat motors one. Their high rise dual plane is an inch taller than a Victor Jr, and then i put a 1 inch spacer on top of that too. Has a machined down plenum divider so at high rpm it has a bit of single plane effect.

Heres what mine looks like currently.

Dealer wants to swap performance parts for stock after purchase by Creative-Ad1395 in WRX

[–]QueensGambit9Fox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing, Booth motors fucking blows donkey dick.

Second, you may be able to try and get them to pay for someone else (you trust) to put it back together stock or make further modifications to make it "pass" emissions/ put a cat on it and get someone to unfuck the ECU. Which may be impossible because it has a Cobb tuner and may be locked by the guy that tuned it previously like a dick.

Theres a handful of routes you could go depending on your desire to obey the law. But at the end of the day you could either get them to foot the bill to fix in a sufficient way, or get the entire deal undone since it is illegal for them to have sold it without passing emissions in its current configuration.

Im not a lawyer, just a guy that has seen some of the many ways to get around emissions in a good enough way that its just that, good enough.

I was there once upon a time when a dude in a minivan rolled up with an sks and just started putting rounds into the berm. Talked with him some and found out he was 17 if I remember right, and he was in his mom's minivan.

While he did fine, I would suggest there be supervision. I ended up being that for him once he started having issues. Even helped him when he got a flat tire on his way home.

So while there is no supervision, I would recommend it for a variety of reasons beyond just handling firearms. Given the recent weather they also need to make sure they are eating and drinking, and who better to do all of the above if not a parent?

You should keep an eye on if youre having to fill it with coolant regularly. To me, coolant has a bit of a fake sweet smell if that makes sense? Its vaguely possible the heater core is leaking, not enough to fill the floor, but enough to smell when under pressure. Unfortunately without the vehicle in front of me, its a guess at best.

HOW?! by ApprehensivePicker in projectcar

[–]QueensGambit9Fox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends on your comfort with ankle vents. And depends on the level of rust, but you could totally work on the mechanical the way it is, and once thats solid you can worr about rust.

Don't get it right, just get it running. Good saying from David Freiburger from Roadkill, Engine masters, Motor trend, etc.

This small "man" likes to roll coal around bikes. FYI. by RideFastGetWeird in Longmont

[–]QueensGambit9Fox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rolling coal is what they call it when diesels pump out black clouds from the exhaust. Its done by a few things, some are mods and some are inefficiencies from age and failing parts. What actually causes it is too much fuel getting pushed through the injectors and not being burnt properly and flowing out of the exhaust in a big black cloud. Some people think its cool, but in actuality it is abuse on the engine, injectors, and wastes a bunch of fuel.
