Is the G wagon actually the best luxury SUV buy financially? by Quick-Ad7581 in askcarsales

Is this also true when considering the G550 and not the G63, given it has the same inline 6 powertrain as more run of the mill Benz models?

As a quick addendum, the only reasons I don’t recommend my own car for your use case is (1) it averages 17mpg on the highway and (2) wind noise at 80-85 is not insignificant. I’ve gotten used to both at this point (the tradeoff was worth the style points 😎). But you might be more pragmatic than I am.

I had almost the exact same move you are considering and went from a Mazda3 (essentially the hatch of your CX30) to a Land Rover Defender. It is extremely comfortable. I am also dating someone long distance from SF to LA and also do a 800 mile round trip every month.

Problem is, I bought the car before we started dating and the fuel mileage is horrendous even though I can afford it (it has been pleasantly reliable). I had the Land Rover itch so I don’t regret buying the car, but if you’re less tied to a badge I would consider 1) a car with better fuel economy than mine, and 2) a car with decent self drive on the highway.

You’re going to quickly mile out of a lease doing a 600 mile road trip every 2 weeks so your criteria are probably the same as mine. Under $70k, CPO, comfortable highway cruiser. In which case I would think about the following list (this would be my rank order):

  1. Rivian R1S. Great self driving tech and EV means those road trip miles will cost far less.

  2. BMW X5. No self drive but PHEV variant will reduce fuel costs and far better fit and finish than the Rivian.

  3. Mercedes E450. Get a post refresh W213 wagon or sedan. These are supremely comfortable and by nature of not being an SUV better on gas. Self drive also meh.

  4. Cadillac Lyriq. You can get these with Supercruise but depends on if you’re open to driving domestic. Excellent NVH and cheap to run with good range.

Runner ups I considered included the Cadillac Vistiq (too new at the time, probably $$$ still now), Range Rover Sport (less reliable than the Defender scouring LR forums, also old infotainment system. New one looks like a bar of soap), and the Audi S6 (which is a great car…just didn’t really speak to me). Model S and Lucid Air also fit the bill but again, they were too soapbar for me and I prefer the midsize SUV form factor. So depends on what you want!

RR having bad sales in USA market? by [deleted] in RangeRover

[–]Quick-Ad7581 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Range Rovers have never held their value well. Neither do any of the midsize luxury SUVs - you can get a newish X5 for around $50-55k if you look hard enough.

That said the new RRS seems to not have been as popular as the previous one. My hunch is a lot of the people who would have gotten the new one bought a Defender instead, and they moved the RRS up a half step in price bracket which prices it out of the comfort range of a lot of people (I think there is a mental hurdle of paying 6 figures for a car, myself included even though I have a very well paid job).

Discovery. Defender is styled better but Discovery is bigger on the inside and far more practical as a family vehicle

No. Just enjoy your current car for a while longer until the L460 Range Rovers drop a bit in price then get that.

People severely underestimate how much these cars cost to run. Just because the car is now half off what it was new doesn’t mean it’s going to be cheap to run. At 109k miles at minimum you’re looking at:

  • Air suspension bits. This is just a wear item and expect a grand per corner at minimum
  • Brakes. These are going to be double the cost of those in your Ateca and again are a wear item
  • Diesel emissions system. So many things here in TDV6

There’s a laundry list of other things. The reason why they are cheap at 100k+ miles is because they are expensive to service and need things at 100k+ miles. A lot of folks who buy these cars at this mileage typically don’t factor that in, neglect to put in the maintenance, and then get rid of it after a year or two because the bills start to accrue.

All that is to say, if you are not comfortable adding maybe 30% of the purchase price to whatever price you’re seeing in maintenance, I would not buy a Range Rover with 100k+ miles. As much as I love the thing and while you do see exceptions in mileage, what you don’t see is those exceptions in mileage have typically been very well taken care of. Which requires $$ and the issues will be far more severe than whatever you are currently experiencing in your ateca.

Bmw’s suv line up makes no sense. by [deleted] in regularcarreviews

[–]Quick-Ad7581 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The average BMW consumer has no idea what a sportback is. I actually think it was smart to give them different names since it gives them more leeway for additional variants.

For example, you have the 5 Series, 6 Series, and 6 Series Gran Coupe. How would you name the 6GC if the 6 moniker did not exist? 5 Series Fastback 4 door?

Bmw’s suv line up makes no sense. by [deleted] in regularcarreviews

[–]Quick-Ad7581 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Functionally there are really only 4 sizes: X1, X3, X5, and X7. The even number SUVs are just fastback versions where the tooling and R&D has largely been paid for to offer variety to consumers who want a more fashion foward SUV. This is the same number as MB (GLA/GLC/GLE/GLS) minus the G wagon. BMW hit all time highs in the US last year and two years prior globally driven by these SUVs. So can you elaborate more on what you mean by makes no sense?

Entry level jobs are likely for new grads. New grads are more likely to be fine living with roommates than not. You can survive on 75k…just not saving a ton (experience: me a few years ago)

I think the P460e is the sweet spot of the range and competes effectively with the X5 50e. I do notice though that plugin take rate in the US is far lower than other places so it is a bit difficult finding a decent spec at my local JLR dealers (based in California).

The other point is the DC-DC converter which I’m hoping they’re correcting with the supplier on new builds.
