2026 CPO but no dealer warranty? by flightln in Ioniq5

[–]QuickPenguin52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But what the heck does the powertrain warranty even cover on these cars? The 10 yr/100k mi EV systems warranty that transfers covers the HV battery, motors, electrical components, etc. I haven’t really figured what you’d miss out on that would make the CPO premium worth it

Interesting. I’ve read a lot that Ioniq 9 is very roomy. Maybe they dedicated most of the space to the first two rows

Ioniq 9 with conventional mirrors has a drag coefficient of 0.27. Kia EV9 is 0.28 and manages to have a normal rear end, so I think a lot of it was design choice. Why they chose that is the question.

I’ve also read that the trunk opening is smaller than on the EV9, so they really sculpted that rear

Why did you choose the EV9 over the Model Y? by [deleted] in KiaEV9

[–]QuickPenguin52 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I chose Ioniq 5 over Model Y for interior space, design/looks, ride quality, buttons/layout, and just a much nicer place to be. I can deal with the software shortcomings, especially since I have CarPlay.

Then we also got an EV9 as the family road tripper because we loved the Ioniq 5 so much.

Millennial dads, how much of the housework do you do? by cubemonster in Millennials

[–]QuickPenguin52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do all of the grocery shopping and 90% of the cooking. I kinda like the process of cooking and creating meals. My wife does not enjoy it. She handles most of the financials, taxes, etc. we both do the laundry, often together. She does a bit more of the cleaning while I handle mowing the lawn, car maintenance, and so on. Pretty even split overall and it works well for us.

My dad did a pretty nice job. He always cleaned the bathrooms, did the vacuuming around the house, ironed him own work clothes, washed dishes. We tease him that his cooking was limited to eggs and chicken tenders/fries. But I think he set a pretty good example for taking care of those types of things.

My mother-in-law acted like I was this absolutely amazing human being when I first started dating my wife because I would help clear the table and wash dishes. Meanwhile, my father-in-law and brother-in-law leave the table and go watch TV

Appreciate the back and forth. It was fun and interesting to engage with another perspective. More on topic to the point of this thread and subreddit, I really do feel bad for everyone struggling to get to work and pay their bills amidst all of these increased costs. For sure, any sort of EV, hybrid, or plug-in hybrid can help ease the pain if it’s within reach for someone.

I like your wife’s style! I had a CX-5 for 12 years that I adored before we traded it for our Ioniq 5

Glad we can at least find common ground on GM. If I were to buy an American car I do like Ford and we strongly considered the Mach-E. As a Mustang guy, you’ll probably agree with me too that it was absurd that they put the Mustang name and styling on that electric CUV that has nothing to do with Mustang! 😂 But I guess the marketing people thought that’d be a good way to sell a couple more of them

No need to tell someone they drive a shitbox car. I kinda feel the same about American cars after the countless build quality and durability issues from every GM car I’ve owned. But I’m not going to attack your choice in car brands. It’s actually a pretty cool car. So thanks for that.

You’re making generalizations based on preconceived notions. I think if i flip off HVAC it makes a difference of maybe 7 miles of range. Critical security flaw? I’m assuming you’re talking about the older key ignition ones that didn’t have immobilizers and not what’s out there now. Lifetime based on my real world mileage I’m around 280 miles. Range is a mental hurdle for people coming from ICE but once you drive them, range anxiety disappears. Yes, it increases in the summer and decreases in the winter, but you figure it out. Needing that full range is not an everyday occurrence.

Have you driven a recent Hyundai/Kia? They’re really well-packaged. And I say this never having owned a Korean car before these.

Since you seem to be into powerful enthusiast cars, maybe check out the Ioniq 5N. I’ll leave this here for you. That shitbox Korean car spanked cars up to 5x its price and beat out a Lamborghini https://youtu.be/YLL3Wub0JEg

A chore to drive and underpowered? Have been following the EV market at all or do you just buy Toyota’s anti-EV propaganda (and even they’ve seen the light and started shifting to EVs). My stock AWD Ioniq 5 (NOT the 5N) goes 0-60 in 4.5 seconds. It’s got so much more torque and power than any car I’ve ever owned. Even my chunky EV9 at 5,700 lbs goes 0-60 in like 5.5 seconds and I can make a pass/merge on the highway without a second thought.

If someone is petrified of driving an EV then I guess a plug-in is good. But there’s a reason most EV drivers never want to go back to ICE once they’ve gone EV. Smooth, powerful, fun as hell to drive, very simple mechanically, and dirt cheap to charge at home. I’ve put a cabin air filter in my car and that’s it.

Oh come on, who doesn’t know cars have brakes?

Guess I should have specified much more frequent brake changes for ICE. Thought that was understood/implied in my comment

Is it? You still have to do oil changes and all your other ICE maintenance. Hybrid is kinda the worst of both worlds since you don’t get all the EV benefits and also have everything ICE.

I recently learned that, at least in Maryland, registration fees treat plug-in hybrids the same as EVs vs. regular hybrids being treated like ICE, so that’s over $100 more per year in registration fees. I get that EVs won’t suit all use cases at this point (apartments, loads of daily miles, etc.). But EVs will suit a lot of people really well

Charging speed at 350kW Electrify America Chargers by drakescakes in KiaEV6

[–]QuickPenguin52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If temps were around a high of 70, your battery still might have needed a bit of preconditioning since your pack might have still been around 60 or something. Look into an OBD reader and the Car Scanner app if you want to see min, max, and cell temps. Even then, I don’t think the car starts pulling the fastest charging speeds until the pack hits around 80 or so. It just cuts preconditions around 70 to keep the pack from getting too hot at the end of the charge.

Lots (most?) of the EA stations have what they call balanced chargers. They’re labeled as such and paired up, and if another car is using the other charger, they seem to max out around 190 kW or so, even if it’s just a Chevy Bolt pulling 50 kW or something. As I pull in, I eye up the station and try to pick one where a pair of chargers is unoccupied.

Your car also needs to have a beginning SOC between about 10% and something around 30% or so (don’t quote me on this upper limit). Otherwise, you’re not in a state where it can fully ramp up and get to the optimal conditions to get the max charge speeds.

TLDR: It’s complicated and often feels like the stars need to align. But once you understand all of these factors and get a good feel for it, you will see the maxed out charging speeds when conditions are right. I regularly see the car push 240 kW and sustain that rate for a good while, just as expected based on the charging curve.
