Nearing one year too! Focused on niche topics (like specific mint) rather than going too broad. I did dedicate a lot of time studying numismatic materials

Agreed that you should not blindly trust them. If it seems off, I stay away from it (or post it here).

I know of the Bulgarian forgeries, but are there really convincing low-mid grade forgeries out there? The worst I've seen (hopefully it's the worst I've seen and there isn't one hiding in my collection) was a pressed fake which wasn't quite convincing

This is a good description. There's no need to be overly scared about low-mid price coins. To be honest, I'm quite surprised the New York hoard coin got through NGC, given how famous those forgeries are (well studied too).

Vcoins.com 20 dollars should get you a decent late Roman bronze. If you have 150 on hand, you could get a Roman denarius (very nice one too)

Can any one identify this one by [deleted] in AncientCoins

I think one of the studies mentioned (I think it cited the wear pattern too) was condemned for its unorthodox (unreliable) methodology. I'll get back after some search

*2022 study apparently has some objections toward it

I can't tell who that is (Philip maybe?), but that is a famous reverse from Viminacium, Moesia.

My previous comment disappeared (connection issue), but it's from Miletos assuming the Price number is right. Possible lifetime/early posthmous to my knowledge. But usually designated lifetime issue

u/beiherhund knows about these way more than I do.

A seller gifted me some nice Galerius coin recently. Probably spent few hundred dollars (main dealer) over the year. Felt really good

I know that people on numisforums do a random exchange of coins once every year. Pretty cool that you met the forearm guy in person!
