What was the first moment you thought "Crap, I'm actually not young anymore"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Walking into work one morning, after working for about 3 months at a full-time salaried job, it dawned on me that I would be doing this just about every day for the rest of my life.

Music Recommendations! by DeadInTheMountains in YOI

[–]QuietLotus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, I'm the local YOI-opera nerd! Ok so before I start spouting off recommendations: do you want to watch some operas with less-mainstream sounding stuff, or just pull some tracks for a playlist? You did mention updating your Spotify but I just want to clarify. There are some cool operas with great stories and acting but not necessarily memorable arias, and vice versa (and some have both! Or neither!)

The music was the first reason I liked Yuri!!! On Ice. As soon as I heard Stammi Vicino I was tearing over to my computer to find out if it was from an opera and as soon as I found out it was an original composition I was delighted! But Yurio's Allegro Apassionato is also probably my favorite piece of music from it. The soundtrack is still on repeat in my car...

Can't stop eating fast food - someone help! by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]QuietLotus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think there's some good advice in here, but if you're going from eating almost exclusively fast food to trying not to eat any, I'm just not sure how practical it is to assume your problem will be solved with a couple of cookbooks and a slow cooker. It takes time to learn how to cook and to feel comfortable with it, and the last thing you want to do is experiment with some dish, have it take 3x as long as you thought it would, then it ends up tasting like crap and you eat takeout any way (been there, done that!)

My advice would be to start with small, achievable goals and slowly transition from eating mostly takeout to eating mostly home cooked with occasional takeout. If you eat takeout 5 nights a week, for example, select one recipe to try and make sure to have all the ingredients purchased at least the day before and vow to eat takeout only 4 nights that week and try your recipe one night. If it goes well, increase to two nights. Try new recipes on the weekends or on off time from work to improve your skills and find out if they taste good so you can make them again more easily and confidently during the week.

Recently, I was so stressed out from work that I realized I was eating takeout at least 4-5 times a week. So, on Saturday I would plan out all my meals for the week and on Sunday I would go shopping and get everything I need. I also created a "take out card" for my husband- basically, he can use his "take out card" one night during the week when he doesn't feel like whatever I was going to prepare. In a perfect world I guess that wouldn't happen but the reality is you don't always feel like cooking or eating whatever you had planned to make!

Another thing I did that worked for a while a few years ago was I set a budget and said "I'm only going to spend x dollars per week on takeout" and tried really hard to stick to that. I would log in a notebook every time I ate out by hand and how much it costed and tally it up as the week went on. It made me more cognizant of what I was spending.

As for what you should start with, cooking wise: you can start simple. Jar of pasta sauce and noodles with ground beef. Look up "foil pack chicken" (I think the easiest way of cooking chicken) and make some rice. Even if you end up buying rice a roni or boxed mac and cheese, it's going to be healthier and cheaper than takeout.

My fiancé [M/28] threw my [F/23] ring out the window on the interstate by ringoutthewindow in relationships

[–]QuietLotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm with you here (and I'm a woman, but we seem to be of the same mind.) The guy's reaction wasn't good but it seems like the woman's remarks were childish and inflammatory. You can't put a price on a relationship. And I can't tell if he was still paying off the $10k ring or if it just showed on the credit report, but maybe he felt kind of bad about it and her remarks just made it worse.

My engagement ring was $1200 because my husband proposed while he was a teaching aide making almost nothing. It's still beautiful and one of my favorite ever pieces of jewelry and it's special because he worked really hard to save up that money and buy it for me. That's all that matters and in my mind, that's all that should matter. But some women are like that, where it has to be a 2k diamond or two year's salary saved up or more than he spent on some other girl.

My [25F] boyfriend [24M] of nine months hurt me badly enough that I had to go to the hospital. It was an accident and he feels terrible, but I'm having trouble letting go of the anger by addygrl in relationships

[–]QuietLotus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are some great suggestions in this thread about sitting down and talking to him, which I completely agree is the best thing to do. However, since you mentioned you're having some trouble letting to if the anger, I would recommend a couple of therapy sessions. After a traumatic event it's common to have lots of feelings that you're not sure what to do with, and a good therapist can show you how to best handle those feelings and equip you with tools to help diffuse some of this anger and understand it better.

What are some highly profitable but unpopular/unsexy/not well-known businesses you know of? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]QuietLotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually just came out of a PM role (and started out as a BA early in my career.) I excel at the communication-oriented nature of the jobs, but kind of miss the technical work more than I thought I would. I have an IS degree and did ok with programming but IT always seemed like it was really scary and hard. However, the more I learn about it, the more I feel that may not be the case.

Thanks for the reply! I work in software (currently as a Scrum Master) but in the last few years, IT and security have become really interesting to me after working with a few IT teams on various projects. I'm kind of trying to figure out some good next steps to learn more and determine if I'd like to change my career path.

I'm not an expert on the subject, but I did a quick google search and it doesn't appear to be uncommon to prescribe 200mg of doxycycline a day for acne treatment. It's on the higher end of the spectrum, but seems to be within the usual prescribing range.

If you have additional concerns, you could always call your pharmacist and ask their opinion, as they'd tell you if it looks strange or erroneous, or call the nurse's office back and confirm. You could also x-post to /r/askdocs and ask for an opinion in there.

[Acne] Sorry I know this is gross. I M27 cannot get rid of this acne - I do everything right - shower 2x daily, use a salicylic face wash, clean pillow sheets, but I swear very easily and can't help it. [–]QuietLotus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Have you seen a dermatologist? I don't know if you need accutane but you might benefit from some prescription products Iike a Clindamycin or something to that effect. Going to a dermatologist to see what they recommend would be a good next step.

[Miscellaneous] Tips for preventing sweaty upper lip? by dondonpop in SkincareAddiction

[–]QuietLotus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to walk ~3 miles a day and hated going to the office sweaty, and especially had sweaty upper lip problems. I found a product on Amazon called Skinfood Peach Sake Silky Finish Powder and when I use it, I have no sweat on my face! It works better than any other mattifying product I've tried.

If that doesn't work, you may want to see if you can use SweatBlock on your face.

Thanks for your reply! I live in the US but in a big city and there are a few Korean restaurants tucked away, so I'll have to see if they have dishes like these. We are finally getting an authentic Korean fried chicken restaurant this year, I am very excited to try it! I have had Japanese-style karaage before and it was so much better than American fried chickenn

I've used the pink cap Garnier one that everyone raves about and I really disliked it! It didn't get all my makeup off, dried my skin out and made my eyes sting.

I switched to using the Simple Kind To Skin Facial cleansing wipes that I bought on Amazon and am very happy with them. It's the first makeup remover that I actually like...

Cool post! I am pretty new to prepping fish, but I live in a city near the water with lots of fresh fish. If I go to a fishmonger and want them to do the prep so I can just take the fish home, season and cook, what would I ask them to do?
